Some more serological testing data has come out in the past few days.
Los Angeles County, California
Estimates 2.8% to 5.6% of the county's adult population tested positive. This is 28 to 55 times higher than the 7,994 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in early April.
San Miguel County, Colorado
4757 tests processed. 26 positive, 72 borderline and 4659 negative. A report on earlier data from this town said this implies and infection rate of 0.7 to 2.3%. This area has a low population density of 5.7 people/mile.
Stockholm, Sweden
Tests were conducted on 200 blood donors. 11% showed antibodies. The actual number of infected is estimated to be higher, since all blood donors were healthy and symptom-free. Sweden is an interesting case, because they have not instituted any mandated lockdowns, though many are social distancing by personal choice.

I will likely encourage most of my standing athletes to scale the thrusters to squats to a box. The majority of them are still developing strength through their full ROM, and adding that dumbbell is going to make it too easy to start cutting corners.
If the seated athletes aren't feeling another go at the plank shoulder taps, we'll swap in some chair dips to mix it up.
I also anticipate a few seated athletes' backs not loving the deadlifts and the back extensions back-to-back. We'll switch to russian twists or side touches to keep that nice fast cycle-time core stimulus.
And, in light of the Kohio et al study (cited below) showing that elevated tissue glucose increases the ability of influenza viruses to adhere and penetrate the endothelial cells, the possibility is raised that in the current pandemic it may be easier for SARS-CoV2 to infect the lungs of diabetics in the first place and once accomplished, with all those macrophages poised there to attack, a higher chance of overwhelming inflammatory response throughout the alveoli and the greater risk of the respiratory distress that leads to the ventilator. Certainly that's what we've seen occurring re metabolic syndrome and obesity (itself part of metabolic syndrome) driving up the risk of bad covid-19 outcomes in even those younger than 'elderly'.

Exactly. There are two (maybe more, but two I can think of) axes which could explain the clearly observed phenomenon that diabetics have a higher rate of COVID morbidity and mortality than nondiabetics:
I'm slowly working my way through the data on #2, but yes, this paper and others like it suggest specific morphological changes in diabetics that could explain #1. If both were true, that would position diabetes as an extremely harmful condition, particularly if large-scale infections like COVID and like the last few flu seasons we have experienced increasingly become the norm. The questions that follow then, for me, are:
The answer to these questions should color how we think of chronic disease, and how we ought to respond to the chronic disease epidemics at an individual and a societal level in light of the infectious disease epidemics we are now seeing.

"There is a new study out yesterday suggesting that the true number of covid cases might be “50-85-fold more than the number of confirmed cases”, which could imply that the fatality rate is no worse than seasonal flu.
I was intrigued by this at first but cautious. After having read criticisms of the study from several sources, I'm now very skeptical.
In brief, the study tested 3300+ people and found 50 positives (serological testing). However, they recruited via Facebook ads, which could bias the sample (people who are worried they've had it are more likely to volunteer). The sample does not have the same demographic weighting as the general population, so they had to adjust for this, which can introduce errors. And it's not clear that they properly took account of false positives in the tests. Further, the conclusion doesn't match with other evidence we have, such as the overall mortality rate in NYC.
Bottom line: Don't use this to conclude that covid is actually highly asymptomatic and not very fatal, or that therefore the disease is not very dangerous or that we already have herd immunity."
You’re absolutely right to interpret these results with caution. They're the first random serological results reported in the US. They could be inaccurate and not generalizable to the rest of the world. By how much, no one knows. But what I can say is there is a lot more room to go up from 2.5-4% than down. Another serological test of a semi-random sample in a Boston suburb showed a 32% infection rate. In Heinsberg, Germany, 15% were antibody positive. This area was especially hard hit and has been called “Germany’s Wuhan”. In other places, infection rates could be way lower.
You’re correct that they might not account for false positives. False negatives can be a problem too, depending on the sensitivity of the test. Some people don’t mount as strong an antibody response as others. An article I linked to in a previous reply showed data that antibody responses were greater in more severe cases. There might be people out there who were asymptomatic and mounted a low immune response. The authors of this paper provided a wide range of interpretation based on the sensitivity data provided by the test manufacturer, as well as their own independent calibration. Still, it’s early and testing accuracy is bound to improve.
I wouldn’t expect Santa Clara data to explain NYC, the most extreme outlier in the US. Nor does the NYC example explain what is going on in San Diego, Denver or any of the 33 cities named Springfield. To get an accurate picture of what’s really going on, we need lots of tests in a variety of places and population groups.
You brought up some good points. As much as I’m hoping this virus is less lethal than currently estimated, it’s important to stay objective and follow the data where it leads.

In the Open, there would be a weight for scaled but this, in my opinion, is for community support instead of competition and the intent is to use whatever would give you a good workout. You could enter your score as is or if you desired do it with lighter weight in hopes for a better time.

Felt like a sloth this morning
This is an incredibly important study. It represents the first large-scale antibody test of a random sample of the US population. This provides a much better sense of the true prevalence of the infection. At first, we were only testing people under very specific conditions. You had to have traveled to China, shown severe symptoms or be a pro basketball player (seriously). Those restrictions have loosened somewhat, but we still didn’t have reliable data on how many people are infected. This means we also don’t reliably know either the infection rate or the fatality rate.
The random selection is important, because if you only test people in hospitals with severe symptoms, you would underestimate the infection rate and overestimate the severity of the infection. Since so many people are asymptomatic, it’s important to test people at random who would not show up in hospital data.
There have been a few good data points prior to this:
Iceland has tested a large portion of its population (a little more than 10%) and they allowed people without symptoms to be tested. Random samples were also tested. They estimate about a 0.6 to 0.8% infection rate. And the mortality rate is around 0.5%. 50% of cases were asymptomatic.
The Diamond Princess cruise ship had an outbreak that infected 634 of 3711 passengers and crew members. Roughly half were asymptomatic. There were 7 deaths, which is much less than what early estimates would have predicted.
There was also an outbreak on a US aircraft carrier recently where 600 of 4800 sailors tested positive. 60% were asymptomatic. They tested 95% of the crew, so there’s not a lot of guesswork here.
A sample of 215 pregnant women in NYC were tested and 15% were positive for coronavirus. 29 of the 33 who tested positive were asymptomatic.
These all give us some clues about different aspects of the coronavirus, such as its lethality and number of asymptomatic cases. However, the spread of coronavirus on ships is expected to be much higher than on the mainland. Iceland and pregnant women in NYC also do not necessarily represent the US population as a whole.
The Santa Clara study gives us another data point that offers a clearer estimate of the spread of coronavirus. More serological studies like this one are underway. An Abmat can be simulated by rolling a towel up, or using a similar sized object (like a small couch pillow, or a packaged bed sheet set). This is a nice and fast chipper! Like every chipper will place high demands on the endurance of your muscles. However first three movements will allow you to keep a very good cadence, so the first part will feel highly aerobic (i.e. you will be sweaty and breathing hard). When you get to the thrusters you will need to go, because it is the last movement and the load is not heavy. This all means that this workout will hit your hard right at then end. It definitely has a punch! Aim to keep it in the 7-10 minute window. Scale the weight to something that will allow you to do the deadlifts unbroken. It does not mean that's what you should do, but pick a weight in your head you are confident you will be able. This will determine the weight for your thrusters. Chose a height on the box that you can cycle through efficiently and without stopping. Go out, let it burn and have fun!
