Same Method Since The Beginning. A Different Workout Posted Every Day.

25 Years of Results

The methodology that crowns the Fittest on Earth keeps people out of nursing homes, prepares Special Forces, and has been associated with improvements in metabolic health and recovery support. Proven across populations for over two decades. 9,000+ gyms. 150+ countries.

One Brand. One Methodology. One Global Movement.

CrossFit® is a brand of fitness training, a global community of coaches and members who train using its methodology, and the company that licenses and supports the independent gyms – known as affiliates, locally called “boxes” – that teach it. Together, the CrossFit brand, methodology, and independent affiliate network create a connected global fitness ecosystem.

The methodology is the constant, the community is what keeps you showing up, and the result is a kind of fitness that holds up over your lifetime, letting you say yes to any adventure or handle any adversity into your 80s and 90s.

What We Believe About Fitness

1. Fitness Is Measurable

You should be able to tell someone how fit you are with numbers, not feelings. CrossFit makes fitness as quantifiable as any other domain of physical performance, so you will have a deadlift number, a mile time, and a score on Fran - a benchmark workout every CrossFit athlete completes and measures.

2. The Workout Should Look Like Your Life

The movements you train should be the ones you already use, just done better, including standing up, sitting down, picking things up, putting them overhead, and getting from point A to point B at speed. None of these are exotic, and all of them are things your body is going to do today anyway.

3. Hard Work Scales

There is no version of the workout that is not the workout, so whether you are lifting an empty bar or hitting a personal record, your effort is real, and your progress is real. Scaling is how the method survives contact with actual humans.

4. Community Drives Results

The fun is in the community. Effort is contagious, showing up is contagious, and accountability with a face on it is one of the strongest training inputs we have.

The Workout, In Brief

A CrossFit class runs for about one hour, with a coach leading the room and the group moving through it together. Everyone warms up together, learns or refines a skill or lift together, and finishes the Workout of the Day together. The work changes every day, but the format does not.

Explore deeper into this on the Methodology page.

A Local Gym, Not a Chain

CrossFit affiliates are independent, with each one locally owned and operated by people who know the community they serve. They share a methodology and a name without sharing a corporate manual, a class size policy, or a pricing structure handed down from somewhere far away.

The gym down the street from you is run by a human being who lives down the street from you, and that person picked the equipment, hired the coaches, and built the schedule around what their community actually asked for. The room is local. The work is universal.

How a Garage Got This Big

Greg Glassman started writing workouts in the late 1990s, when he was a former gymnast running training sessions for, among others, members of the Santa Cruz Police Department. In 2001, he started posting the day’s workout on a small website called CrossFit.com so his clients could follow along when they could not make a session.

Then a strange thing happened. People he had never met started doing the workouts. Then those people opened gyms. Then thousands of them did the same.

CrossFit was not a marketing plan; it was a workout, posted publicly, done by people who liked how it felt to do hard things together. There was no Series A, no influencer launch, and no growth playbook. Just a coach, a stopwatch, and a website that posted one workout a day for 25 years and counting.

25 Years In. Just Getting Warm.

The methodology is still the methodology, the work is still the work, and the door is still open, so find a gym, walk in, and do one class. That is how every CrossFit athlete started, including the ones competing for the title of the Fittest on Earth® this summer.

Questions We Hear a Lot

  • An independent gym licensed to use the CrossFit name and methodology, with each affiliate locally owned and operated. There are more than 9,000 of them across over 150 countries today.

  • What some CrossFit members call their gym, a name that dates back to the early days when most CrossFit gyms were unmarked warehouse spaces with concrete floors, rigs, and not much else. Some still are, and we are not particular about the décor.

  • No. CrossFit gyms are independent businesses operating under a license, with no corporate parent dictating class size, pricing, or programming, so affiliates have real autonomy. That is why no two are exactly alike, and the coaches at your local gym answer to your local community.

  • The annual competition to crown the Fittest on Earth® — one man and one woman — which started in 2007 on a ranch in Aromas, California, and is now a globally broadcast sport. The vast majority of CrossFit athletes will never compete in the Games, and the sport of CrossFit is not a requirement; it is simply an option for the competitive among us.

  • No. The membership is intentionally broad, and new mothers, retirees, college athletes, post-surgery rehabbers, and Olympic lifters all train in the same gym, often in the same class, because the method scales and the community welcomes.

  • Because it works, because it is measurable, and because doing hard things in a room full of other people doing hard things turns out to be one of the most rewarding experiences a human can have.

  • Find a gym near you, tell them you have never done a CrossFit workout before, and book your first class. That is the process, and the coach takes it from there.
