Growing up in Costa Rica in an abusive, poverty-stricken household, Haydee Reyes learned early how to endure. She carried that resilience with her when she moved to the United States — where she eventually found CrossFit. At Mako CrossFit, she discovered more than a workout; she became part of a community. When she faced a devastating breast cancer diagnosis, followed by surgery and months of grueling treatment, the thing she looked forward to most was getting back to the gym floor and to her Mako family. She says CrossFit didn't just give her a place to heal; it gave her the strength to survive.

The Colman family met Todd Widman a decade ago through the kids program at ZooTown CrossFit. Five months after she started CrossFit, tragedy struck.
