1:38-1:33-1:35-1:34-1:34-1:35-1:33-1:31 splits, 22:59 overall

Initially, I was aiming at just keeping each split at 1:40 or better due to reduced running volume over the last 5 months, but revised my goal a little after the second run. A few seconds may have been shaved off the rest periods just to make the math a little easier when determining when to start the next run.

No compare to data.

Champions Club Scaling Notes

RANT

This is an easy example of looking at a target audience for a workout. If you are good male high school track athlete and are aiming for 2:00 as a floor for this workout, your coach might tell you to switch to discus or shot put for the rest of the season. An elite high school runner would probably be able to keep 1:00 repeats (not the target audience). A good CrossFitter who has a running background would be able to keep these around 1:15. That is the target audience. I mentioned in an earlier rant that I'm trying to go back and get a better understanding of the Messpert lectures, and I'm wondering if the concept of "P-values" is a good analogy here; a range of 1:15 - 2:00 seems like too big of a gap to keep the desired effect of the workouts. The target audience would look at this workout and have nightmares based not on the volume of running, but the intensity they they are capable of bringing.

WORKOUT THEMES

Medium and light, high output followed by a decent rest. Single modality/sport-specific. A test to see how good our recovery is.

ASSUMED

Helen, Michael, and Kelly are your best-performing benchmark workouts. Not Eva though. Nobody is good at Eva.

MAIN DECISION

Keep the distance to work on stamina/technique, or shorten the distance to keep the intensity?

TECHNIQUE SCALE

As is, do some Pose drills during the rest. Also see how you feel after 6 rounds.

CONSISTENCY SCALE

8 400-m runs for total time.

Rest as needed between runs

*Each run has to be 1:15 (or pick a number for you) or the run does not count

INTENSITY SCALE

Pick any movement you can do at a high intensity for somewhere in the ballpark of 1 minute. Same kind of format

MY STUFF

Checked the box today. Did Tabata shuttle runs w/backpedals. 20 cycles. Then ran with Mrs. Gloria for a bit. The Champions Club peeps aren't going to let me hear the end of it when they read this.

I am interested in what you are saying about p-values. Are you using the term in terms of statistics and probability, or in some other way?

Comment URL copied!
Chris Sinagoga
March 8th, 2022 at 3:22 pm

If I understood Zoe and crew correctly, a p-value is basically how likely something happened by coincidence, and it's based off a range. So if a pill is claiming to help you by 20%, then it's assumed that there's some people that it helped 19% and some people it helped 21%. But if it helped one person 30% and one person 10% then that's too big of a range.

That was my analogy with the 400m times. If one person does the workout "as rx'd" and does 1:15 400s, and the second person does 2:00 400s (or even starts at 1:15 and ends at 2:00), then that's really not the same workout being done. Not sure if that was the best analogy or not - I have zero science background - but for whatever reason "p-values" were the first thing that came to mind.

Yeah they aren't going to let you hear the end of it, especially since this sort of workout is in your wheelhouse.

Mr. Van was particularly ruthless in his verbal assault of my ego.

At the gym we did AMRAP in 20 minutes of: [insert target] run, and it had to be done in 1:10 or else the run didn't count. It provided a good opportunity to play around with rest, and also find some gears that need to be practiced more often. Then with the last session we only had 4 people, so we tried for 4 400-m runs (or a little less) that had to be within 1 second of your first time; first one to finish 3 didn't have to do the 4th. Mr. Carey was the lucky guy to test out of the 4th attempt.
