Laurie Roth’s Doctors: “Keep Doing What You’re Doing”

Laurie Roth has early childhood memories of being mocked because she was overweight.

“The less self-esteem I had, the more I would turn to food to treat how I felt,” she says.

In adulthood, Roth decided to change her nutrition habits, which resulted in a 60-lb. weight loss. Then she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

“There really wasn’t any nutritional counseling or counseling about diabetes,” Roth says of her doctor consults. “It was, ‘You need to be on insulin immediately.’”

When she began using insulin, the weight started to creep back on, eventually totaling more than she had lost. Upon giving birth to her daughter, Ava, Roth knew she had to make a change again.

“I want her to remember me as a strong, capable mother,” Roth says through tears.

In November 2015, Roth walked into CrossFit Round Rock in Round Rock, Texas, and she hasn’t looked back since.

Her doctors approve.

“This is the first time that I’ve ever had doctors look at me and say, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing.’”
