It Takes Two

Jim and Diane Coske were married in 1992. Through the years, each pursued their own individual passions. Jim, who is a physical therapist, spent much of his time playing competitive softball, while Diane, who worked in finance, enjoyed competitive volleyball. When they realized they had very little time together as a couple, they knew they needed to make a change.

“There was a point in our life where (Jim and I) realized we were going to have separate memories because we were doing nothing together,” Diane says.

After initially reconnecting over a mutual passion for hiking and climbing, the two found CrossFit. Jim was the first to dive into the fitness regimen in 2008, and although he urged Diane to attend a class, she was hesitant because she was rehabbing a volleyball injury. But Jim was persistent, and eventually, Diane gave CrossFit a try.

“I want to be able to have a good quality of life with my wife,” Jim says, “and I want us doing things that make us happy.”

Diane says CrossFit instigated a defining moment in her health and fitness.

“I never thought I’d be competitive again,” Diane says. “I never thought I’d sweat like I used to. I never thought I’d be able to play volleyball again like I used to. And there was a moment in the (CrossFit) gym where I said, ‘I’m back. I can do this.’”

In 2010, Diane left her job and she and Jim opened CrossFit Oyster Point in Newport News, Virginia.

The goal of the affiliate, Jim says, is to help people improve their life and fitness.

Diane adds: “If (CrossFit) gets you excited about getting healthy, and eating right, and moving right, then that’s a home run.”
