CrossFit Risk Retention Group Becomes Official Insurance Provider for U.S. CrossFit Affiliates Through 2031

CrossFit has entered a multi-year partnership through Dec. 31, 2031, naming CrossFit Risk Retention Group (CrossFit RRG) as the Official Gym Insurance Provider of CrossFit® Affiliates in the United States.  

Designed specifically around the CrossFit methodology and the operational realities of running a gym, the partnership connects U.S. CrossFit affiliates and credentialed CrossFit trainers with tailored insurance coverage, specialized claims defense, and risk-management resources. Originally created by CrossFit in 2009, CrossFit RRG today insures roughly half of all U.S. CrossFit affiliates, making it the country’s largest insurer of CrossFit gyms.

Unlike traditional commercial insurance carriers, CrossFit RRG operates as a policyholder-owned risk retention group where membership means ownership. Every insured affiliate becomes a shareholder in the company rather than just a policyholder, with affiliate representation on CrossFit RRG’s board of directors directly shaping underwriting standards and policy design.

A central differentiator of CrossFit RRG is that its policies are written to support, rather than restrict, the daily operations of CrossFit gyms. Key coverage protections tailored to affiliate operations include full liability coverage with no age restrictions on youth training, standard coverage for open gym sessions and 24-hour facility access subject to basic safety requirements, and included coverage for off-site training sessions conducted outdoors in local parks, beaches, and parking lots. Additionally, policies extend protection to gym-hosted community events, including gatherings where alcohol is served, as well as on-premises coverage for affiliate gym dogs.

CrossFit RRG streamlines the administrative burden for business owners through a fully digital online portal where gym owners can complete applications, secure quotes, execute payments, and manage documentation online without submitting standard ACORD forms or loss runs. The organization’s staff includes active affiliate owners, Certified CrossFit Trainers (CF-L3), personal trainers, and athletes who bring direct industry experience to member service.

In addition to custom policy terms, CrossFit RRG provides specialized claims expertise. All claims are coordinated directly by the CrossFit LLC legal team, ensuring cases are handled by legal professionals who deeply understand the sport, the methodology, and the unique affiliate gym environment.
