As rx’d, 7 rounds + 3 wall walks.

Nowhere to hide.  I felt good about moving quickly through the wall walks and not being lulled into a rest at the bottom.  Snatches went well; I still can’t transfer the dumbbell well in mid-air (tried in one round) so I just switched on the floor – it’s almost as fast.  Did jumps on the box for a couple rounds, but switched to step-ups for later rounds as they were more efficient.  Reading back through the Games standards, these are technically a scale but whatever.

Men's scaled'ish - subbed highest possible tuck jumps for box jump overs at a pace I figured I could keep if using a 24in box.

6rds + 2 (182 reps)

Nothing to jump onto today except a rickety bench, so I figured I would get more out of the tuck jumps. I would have used Rx DB weight but the heaviest I had was 35#. Completed round 7 after the clock for good measure. Fun event. Can't wait to see what pain gets thrown our way next.

Why has the CrossFit Games made the box jumps a mandatory step down?

Isn't CrossFit the company who broke the fitness industry showing people it was safe to do kipping pullups and high rep olympic weightlifting? We regularly use those movements to create high power output workouts. Moving Large Loads across Long Distances Quickly.

By making the step down mandatory you slow down the movement and therefore decrease people's power output. That's against the CrossFit methodology.

Instead of leading this community to GPP and the foundation of the CrossFit methodology the CrossFit Games are not Forging Elite Fitness in the community and instead allowing us to become soft.

I have been following CrossFit.com for 5 months now and CrossFit.com has programmed Box Jumps many many times. So to be clear I am not pointing the finger at CrossFit.com programming I am pointing it directly at the CrossFit Games

The CrossFit Games is a leader in this space and they need to lead the way by showing our Affiliates that it is important to teach people the benefit of rebounding box jumps (High Power Output among other great reasons) and implementing them at a reasonable volume.

Adrian Bozman & Justin Burgh what do you think?

Erik Dresner
February 25th, 2022 at 5:02 pm

The Games moved to jump-overs to prevent people from blowing out their Achilles tendons jumping backward off the box. It is odd that stepping down forward is now required, especially when jumping clear over the box is allowed. I wonder if this reduces the risk of having the box tip over when jumping off the box? (Not really an issue with wooden boxes at 20”, but more likely at 24”, with foam boxes, or those metal plyometric boxes in the shape of trapezoidal prisms.)

If I had to guess, I would say it's because it's the Open and they know how many people are going to participate and NOT scale who normally would. Plus, constant ready state is also a main theme of CrossFit, so good athletes need to be able to still find a rhythm in a slower movement. Wall walks have a lower power output that handstand push-ups, and dumbbell snatches have a lower power output that regular snatches with a bar. Aaaaand, you are free to do the movements by jumping down as well. We'll be doing regular touch-and-go (rebounding) box jumps for our gym today.

Hi Parker,

Chris has the right idea. I've got no issue with rebounding box jumps, and agree there's a ton of value in training that movement intelligently. However, with a mass-participation event that includes hundreds of thousands of people across the world its important to have the standards keep a balance that allows for intensity and considers some degree of safety. For example, the decision to allow a lateral jump (as opposed to requiring you start facing the box) creates the potential for a much faster cycle time. There's still plenty of intensity to be had despite the step-down.

And hey, if the intensity is too low on the box jumps you should be able to catch your breath and go faster on everything else bumping that intensity right back up ;)

Hey Guys,

I really appreciate the discussion. But I just think this messaging to make step downs mandatory is different from CrossFit's normal messaging. I was expecting to hear something like "rebounding box jumps should only be performed by those who regularly practice the skill... 99% of people should just step down anyway... if you want to perform a rebounding box jump do X, Y, Z to minimize your risk". I saw this as a teachable moment that maybe was missed.

Now... I also acknowledge that CrossFit is teaching these important lessons in the L1's and CrossFit.com regularly programs box jumps! So that is great and you guys are being leaders in that sense and bringing GPP and intensity to the community every day. But the gym that I attended from 2016 - 2020 programmed box jumps extremely infrequently, they have wandered away from the core methodology and messaging, and really only chime into CrossFit.com when it's the open season. I feel like the programmers at that gym need to be reminded of the messaging from CrossFit.

Today the messaging I heard was - we realize some of our gyms have meandered away from box jumps and may not be prepared for this volume therefore we will make the fittest in our community slow down to make you feel more comfortable.

Now... Noah was dying as well on the box jumps... so step downs were actually plenty of intensity enough for even him.. sooooooooo.... I guess I get it...

Thanks again!

Notes:

  • 24" is far for me to step down. I hopped down the back side, reversed, no rebound.
  • On a handful (3?) of WW, I came off the 55" line before 2nd foot made contact.
  • Special thanks to Denise for reminder to drop hips on the snatch. As reps got high it was surprisingly tempting not to.

Champions Club Scaling Notes

RANT

This Rant has a title, it's called, The Ministry's Interfering at Hogwarts (w/f safe)

So this morning one of our dogs, Zebo, decided to take a piss on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I found myself mildly confused in the aftermath: Half of me was like Chris, you pansy, get over it, and the other half was kinda emasculated at the idea he marked my book as his territory. (There was another part of me somewhere slid between the halves that was like seriously Z, go on the carpet if you have to.) Thankfully Zebo didn't have enough in him to damage Dr. Seuss or Calvin and Hobbes.

As I was dabbing some paper towel to the stained pages, I started thinking about how every now and then I get this weirdly ominous sense when I'm watching something that, by all intents and purposes, is supposed to be familiar but is missing something foundational. It's difficult to put it into words; JK Rowling needed 870 pages to relay that feeling. All I know is it's difficult to spot at first, then slowly it becomes blatantly obvious.

What we have in front of us here is the CrossFit Games, which, objectively, has always been the least important thing about CrossFit. We have it being done without the two people who invented it and understood the context behind its creation and the role it played in CrossFit as a whole. There are still going to be dumbbells and bars and probably burpees and people getting their first muscle-up and events that strengthen bonds and friendships... you know these sentences always come with "buuuuuuuttt" at the end... but it doesn't have the same feel - to me, at least. It's almost like there's a contamination and I'm finding it difficult to see the good stuff around it. Hermoine put it about as elegantly as possible.

CrossFit has taught me that the wrong thing will only last until the right thing is discovered. Given enough time I trust CrossFit will find its identity again, or I will come to understand this is the best identity for CrossFit.

WORKOUT THEMES

Medium and medium. A test with a format designed to include everyone to participate but also weed out work capacities. Range of motion, two kinds of jumping, and overhead position are also themes

ASSUMED

Stamina will not be a limiting factor until the late minutes

MAIN DECISION

Do this as part of the test or just another workout to scale to your purpose?

TECHNIQUE SCALE

Pick two of the movements, go for 15 minutes

CONSISTENCY SCALE

Go as rx'd including specific judging standards, but disregard the time cap and go until you feel like you got a good dose

INTENSITY SCALE

Just dumbbell snatch and box jump (not over), and practice handstands in the warmup

MY STUFF

8 rounds, 40-lb. dumbbell, regular box jumps with step down except for 1 round, though wasn't sure what the standard was for wall walks

GENERAL FEAR LEVEL: 7

"Given enough time I trust CrossFit will find its identity again, or I will come to understand this is the best identity for CrossFit."

This is what they ("they") want. Look at HQ's actions immediately following Greg's ouster, for I refuse to acknowledge he "retired." Bringing in someone from the outside. The forced-apology video. New "scholarships" for minorities to attend L1. An "inclusion" tab right up top the website here. Identity politics themed videos & articles about How Hard It Is Being X (depressed, homosexual, a woman (or better yet, trans), brown/blue/yellow, take your pick). None of these things are primarily concerned with Forging Elite Fitness - indeed, as someone pointed out in these comments a few months ago, all reference to Forging Elite Fitness is scrubbed from the website.

Some of the above may be well-intentioned. However in addition to forging elite fitness, I like to think CrossFit's identity (as originally founded) is its ability to transcend those differences among us without being so in-your-face about it. In other words, if the guy next to me finishes Fran first, it doesn't matter whether he's black/white, rich/poor, gay/straight, he's fitter than I am. End of story.

If CF wants to "find its identity again," first step is appoint an insider as CEO. Preferably one of the OGs, likely to be high up the seminar food chain. That Raza is staying on as Chairman leads me to believe the chances of this coming true are as remote as a Zoom meeting.
