For athletes, diet is a huge part of strength, agility, muscle recovery, endurance, and overall physical performance. But food plays just as important of a role in mental fitness.

Love that this has triggered some proper meat heads in the comments! And for not showing a picture of meat, oh nooo! I mean, you just have to walk down your nearest street to see pictures of dead animals cut into bits of food on various adverts if that's what you really want...
Some bits in the article not so up to date with latest scientific concensus, but generally a really positive outlook on diet and crossfit, and clean proteins can include vegan sources, so I'm glad the word "meat" isn't mentioned!

"When predictive value is replaced with consensus as determinant of a model's validity, science becomes nonsense.” There's no voting in science.

Great article, finally CF is in the right direction with its food.
This was fir me the only thing I did not support but now it's finally up to date, I applause the courage to go against the old and support this whole hearted.
Not only for our body and souls, also for our spirit, the respect of life of other animals and the environment we should at least consider plant based.
Great job, keep going...

I'm so glad everybody else was just as annoyed about this as I was. This is garbage nutritional advice. Having glassman back might be a good idea. He didn't bow to anybodys agenda. He might have eventually killed the CF games. But without him CrossFit as a whole is dying.

This cements my resolve not to do a level 2 trainers. CrossFit no longer represents the affiliates and members interests it has sold out to the corporate world. The mere mention of whole grains undermines the message "Off the carbs and off the couch". Next they will be programming bicep curls aaagggghhhhh!!

The majority of published research is incorrect and cannot be replicated. Nutritional epidemiology, sociology, psychology, and psychiatry are leaders in the parade of bad science.

I have heard this idea that industrial oils cause inflammation many times, and I thought it made sense, but most of the references I see are to articles that either show how some biological pathway could create that issue or are large population studies that try to show a correlation but have too many other factors at play to prove anything. For example, one study looked at Eskimos compared to other people, and certainly Eskimos consume more Omega-3's. But does anyone believe they otherwise behave just like your average American and that the rest of their diet and lifestyle is the same?
In the world of controlled, randomized studies there appears to be no correlation between consuming these oils and markers for inflammation: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6179509/ . Can anyone point me to more recent or larger studies that use a controlled, randomized structure to show this effect?

"Focus 80% of the diet on whole, real foods with plenty of fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, and healthy lower-glycemic whole grains, healthy fats as well as quality, well-sourced clean protein"
Protein is last...
I'm pretty sure its "Eat Meat and Vegetables, Nuts and Sees, Some Fruit, Little Starch, and No Sugar". Not whatever the hell that is above..
"Eat the rainbow"...that's some food pyramid bullshit.
80/20 rule suggests that if you eat three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, or dinner), so 84 meals a week, 16 of those meals each week can be whatever you want them to be. That's terrible advice.
Who's writing these? ABC News?
Get it together CrossFit, you're supposed to be a repository for truth and honesty. This is garbage.

Thank you for the article and, for the most part, I am on board. However, I have found that as I age the 80/20 rule has moved to the 95/5 and even stricter rule. Most any 'cheat' these days will result in almost immediate inflammation in the weakest areas, usually the knees and hips for me. Thanks again.

Whole grains? So is “eat meat, vegetables, nut and seeds, some fruit, little starch, no sugar, no grains”, no longer the general prescription.
Eating grains while emphasizing supporting gut health and minimizing inflammation are contradictions.
This general directive seems like a stepping stone to advocating plant based diet.

This article is specifically for peak CrossFit performance.
Picture a 3 way Venn diagram made up of Aesthetics, Performance, and Health. You can’t possibly reach peak potential in each circle, and to build in one you may take from another.
Seeing as carbs are readily available during high intensity work such as CrossFit, I do believe without grains many athletes would not be where they are today.

With respect, Noah, the quote from the fitness in 100 words is this; "Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar." Grains are not specifically mentioned.

Could not have said it more succinctly myself. Seems the food industry is exercising undue influence on the money-hungry new owners' need to produce a positive return. They still don't understand what they bought and probably will have to offload it in a fire sale if they continue. Maybe GG will finance a group of affiliate owners who have demonstrated their abilities to follow GG's vision to end chronic disease and strengthen all CrossFitters so they became metabolically healthy, could remain mobile, and evade nursing homes till 'death.
It's funny; I used to think I cheated myself for never getting my MBA, but now I think it was my smartest decision of my career.
