The Deadlift

7

The deadlift, being no more than the safe and sound approach by which any object should be lifted from the ground, keeps company with standing, running, jumping, and throwing for functionality but imparts quick and prominent athletic advantage like no other exercise. It is unrivaled in its simplicity and impact while unique in its capacity for increasing head-to-toe strength.

WatchThe Deadlift

The Push Press

In the push press, the core-to-extremity principle is obvious as the muscles of the power zone — including the hip flexors, hip extensors (glutes and hams), spinal erectors, and quadriceps — assist the arms in driving the barbell overhead. With the push press, you will be able to move overhead as much as 30% more weight than with the shoulder press. Regular practice of the push press — and the push jerk — develops power and speed, which are critical to effective and efficient athletic movement.

7+7 - Rx (Legs felt heavy today. Deadlifts felt slow, drive was weak on push press.)

6 rounds plus 9 reps as rx’d. Last time 7. No warmup this time and went unbroken on round 1 and round 7 push presses…should’ve picked up that bar 2 sec sooner on the last round. Used a rack for push press and broke 4/3 R2-6…

Checked the box today, slept like crap, tired, unmotivated, and stomach/sinuses upset. Slight cough due to slightly smoky air. Weight felt pretty light, just got gassed. Recovered very quickly afterward so that tells me I could’ve gone faster.

Globo scale: Dumbbell subs are 100/75lb dumbbells for the deadlifts and 45/30lb dumbbells for the push presses. If you can only have one barbell use the dumbbells for the push presses amd the barbell for deadlifts. If 50lb dumbbells are the max weight available up deadlifts to 14 per round for men and 7 per round for women. If 75lb dumbbells are the max weight available 7 deadlifts for men and 3 for women (rxed).

I chose to go Rx because I felt like I needed the heavy-weight stimuli for my muscle growth. Yes, sadly, this is very heavy for me. I completed 5+1, but I did not stop moving. I still feel like it was a good workout for me. There was a time when I would have gone lighter and faster without thinking twice about it. I'll see what this does for me.

All unbroken, DL felt heavier than usual today though. I think I could have hit 10+ if I went full Intermediate scale, but glad I went with a heavier weight this time. Not doing Manion 2 days prior probably helped too.

Anyone reading this lacking the benefit of proper coaching should be aware that you can tie your back into knots doing it wrong by being forward onto your toes. That happened to me until a coach said "stay on your heals". Fixed, instantly. Now I'm happily at 2x bodyweight, and it feels easy. All those deadlifts in the open were a breeze.

Some people call the deadlift dangerous. Think those people will ever need to pick something up off the ground? It's dangerous NOT to train the deadlift.
