Workout of the Day

2007 CrossFit Games Event 2 - The Hopper

For time:
1,000-meter row

Then,

5 rounds of:
25 pull-ups
7 push jerks

♀ 85 lb
♂ 135 lb

Compare to 230707.

Post time to comments.

Stimulus and Strategy:
Today's workout is a throwback to the original hopper workout created for the first CrossFit Games in 2007. Be cautious — the row is a trap. Don't come out too hot, because a healthy dose of pull-ups follows. Aim to complete each set of pull-ups in 4 sets or fewer. The push jerk loading should be moderate, allowing you to perform your reps unbroken in most rounds. As a guideline, a single round of the couplet should take no more than 3 minutes to complete.

Intermediate option:
For time:
1,000-meter row

Then,

5 rounds of:
15 pull-ups
7 push jerks

75 lb
115 lb

Beginner option:
For time:
500-meter row

Then,

5 rounds of:
10 jumping pull-ups
7 push jerks

The pull-up bar should intersect your forearms when standing with your arms overhead.

Mowed instead of rowed, then 5 RFT

25 lat pulldowns (50#)/8 alt DB push press

Completed with a 20 lb weight vest and performed all 125 pull-ups as strict pull-ups. Push jerks stayed unbroken throughout and felt great.

Yesterday was supposed to be a recovery day, but I spent time practicing butterfly pull-ups and handstand push-ups, so my hands were already raw and my shoulders were fatigued before starting. That definitely made the pull-ups more challenging.

Awesome throwback workout!

200925: 12:52 - 14 strict PU and 115# on the PJ

My stamina has waned a bit over the last few years so I put the clock at a lower priority and focused on executing bigger sets for the pull-ups and go UB on the PJ. I think I executed pull-ups in 5s with pretty short breaks in 2023. Row was 3:42 without pushing too hard but I spent more time than I should have getting on the bar to start the rounds. Pull-ups were mostly strict'ish.

Great work - and I would be curious to hear what the workouts leading up to those old times looked like on your compared to's. We've pulled a lot this week - If I remember correctly, high volume snatches, muscle ups, heavy clean, rest day and this. Wondering how much of the cumulative effect of the week played into today's results.

That was a fun birthday wod. CrossFit has been a fun fitness journey, I love the different movements and trying to get better at all of them. I used to just go to the gym and do all the basics but CrossFit makes working out fun and interesting. I appreciate all the hero words and how CrossFit salutes all those that have served and have given everything for our freedoms.

I’ve been following the main site workouts for a long time and it never gets old. Wish I would have started when I was in my 20s. Oh well this helps me stay young at heart.

What a 💩show. My body is hurting this morning. The first round of pulls hurt just to hold the bar and I dropped off before even completing the first rep. The rest of the pull ups were a mix of butterflies, kipping and strict while trying to babysit my ripped palm. The row was a relaxed 4:00 duration. The push jerks were too easy, just switched to strict presses for the last round. Which may have been the 6th because I lost count. In all I spent much more time admiring the architecture of my basement then moving.

Champions Club Scaling Notes

RANT

Again with all the veteran wisdom on here, I'd like to give them a chance to chime in with their input on this workout. Here's a few questions I'd like to get their perspective on:

  1. What's a way you could go at this workout that would probably scare you the most? Or else, give you the most pre-workout nerves/butterflies?
  2. What would be the most likely way you could mess yourself up (not in a good way - ie. injury) on this workout?
  3. What do you actually want to do for the workout today?
  4. What does your body and brain need to get our of this workout today?

I’ll try although there are many more who are going to do a better job with the questions:

1. Scare me? If the row had an aggressive time cap to get to the second part. For me that’s about a 3:50 or faster. Second- if i had to do it Rx because - see 2.
2. Doing push jerks. With chronic compartment syndrome I would have to take a couple of months off in a best case scenario. Worst case i go to the hospital and have emergency surgery to relieve the pressure. Second path to injury - Kipling / butterfly. I don’t have the joint stability to support those movements
3. Row 1000m.5 rounds 15 strict pull ups, 7 strict presses.
4. That i did my best with my limitations and found a way to maintain fitness today and not put myself in a position where my fitness will decline and require recovery.

Hmmm... maybe a mix of #1 and #3 for you? 5 rounds of 15 strict pull-ups and 7 strict presses, then a sub-4 minute 1k row at the end (tell yourself you have to do the entire workout again if you go over 4 haha)

Ha! I did manage to stay under 4 opening with the row. But that redo is a good motivator. "if you haven't finished 250m in 58 seconds, start again..."

Yo, Chris!

  1. Scariest would be having to go Rx with butterfly pull-ups only or making it C&J vice just J.
  2. Not focusing solely on getting the BB off the ground for the PJs at the time I do it, risking a brief moment of poor technique. Plus, if I tried to force myself into a true front rack - that would destroy my elbows and wrists.
  3. I want to work on my stamina, especially with the pull-ups, so go for larger sets though full Rx volume is a bit much for me.
  4. My body needs the movement, my brain needs the hard work. I don't really 'care' about the clock but it helps me push a little harder.

Always great insight my man!
