Can you walk 400 meters carrying 50-lb. dumbbells (♀ 35-lb.)?

A) If not, how far can you go before setting them down?
B) What are the heaviest dumbbells you can carry for 400 meters?

A $1,000 prize will be awarded for the heaviest successful 400-m carry (one for men and one for women). Do it on a track, upload video to YouTube, and post a link to 190505 comments by midnight, Sunday, May 12.

After the carry, practice controlled descents from a handstand for 10 minutes.

Post distance completed for A and load used for B to comments.

I was out of town the day of this WOD. I am completing these on Rest Days. Thus I completed this today, Thursday, May 16.

A. 51lbs DBs = 138m (1 attempt until broken)

B. 400m = 31lbs DBs (1 attempt unbroken)

I may have been able to go slightly heavier on the 400m. Rest between carry attempts was 4-5 minutes. Rest between B and handstands was maybe 10-12 minutes (had to clean up outside).

Decided to take this on this chilly Mothers Day morning to prove to myself that I could do it. A year ago, I think I could carry this unbroken, but not now. "They" always say to know where you are and work where you are and towards where you can go, so a year ago does not matter. Today, I did it...and I put the weights down several times (I didn't count). But what matters is I did it. My left hand was left than cooperative, but I still completed the 400 meters.

In January of this year, I started having numbness in my left-hand fingertips and electrical impulses through my wrist. The docs thought carpal tunnel and wanted surgery. I said no, I just don't feel that is the answer. It soon spread to my whole left hand and forearm, then to my right-hand fingertips and to my entire abdomen. Accompanied by other symptoms, but these seemed the most bothersome. Pursued the doctor which soon landed me with MRIs and a Spinal Tap. Turns out I have many lesions on my brain as well as C-Spine and a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Docs said that I may very well only be functioning as well as I am because I have kept my body athletic and conditioned. So. Thank you, CrossFit.

Videos below, first one cut off and had to resend. So, not worried about prizes and such. But just that I could do it. Cassy Ray, age 35, weight 145, 50# DB's in each hand, 400 m carry. about 150m unbroken at first then several stops along the way. But. Done. (And ignore my husband's commentary, hah)

As rx’d, 400 meters in 3:36 with no drops.

Did not think I would be able to get the full 400m. Made the turn at 200m and whole body was hurting. Grip started to go around 300m, so I bent over and rested the dumbbells on my thighs to get a better grip. This gave me a little bit of new life, but I had to do this multiple times down the last 100m stretch. Forearms were dying afterwards!

Made it 100m Rx (35# DBs).

Then about 50-60m each time. Total was more like 480m with the walk from the house to the road & back. My left hand was definitely the weakest link!

At the 200m mark passed a neighbor out with his dog and he said “that’s too much weight to be carrying especially this far.” 🤔

Made it 300m before the dumbbell peeled out of left hand. Really thought I had it. Shook my hands out and finished it in 3:40.

Then took 10min and walked as far as possible with the 50s. Made it 600m.

Intended Stimulus

.

Remember one of CrossFit's ways of defining functional movement is this: move large loads long distances and quickly. Today's workout is a testament to that. Approach this as the challenge that it is. How far can you go? The result does not matter in itself. We just want to see where you are, set up a baseline and move from there. If you cannot complete the 400m, finish your lap and then move to B. I invite all athletes to try this with the prescribed weights if possible. Athletes for whom the distance will be a challenge in itself should cut the distance in half and still try it weighted. Options for negatives to follow.

If you are performing this on a track send us a picture!

3 Box/Wall/Free Handstand Negative

Max Push-Up Hold at bottom position.

Newby stats. I thought this would be easy and yes walking with 50lbs was really ok but I could not hold on at all. Had to scale down to 30 and finished with 100.100.100.100. Very humbling

This looks like a really fun challenge that will be very taxing on the grip, shoulders, and core! I will have most of my athletes attempt this workout as prescribed with the 50-lb./35-lb. dumbbells. Many will not be able to achieve the full 400 meters, but it will be good to get a baseline for how long they can carry that weight. If 400 meters is not achieved in one attempt, I will still have my athletes complete the 400 meters in as few sets as possible. For further scaling, I will have athletes reduce loads to achieve 400 meters in no more than 4-5 attempts. The perfect loading will be a little bit of a guessing game, but I will use the build-up time to assess the best possible loading choices.

Globo scale... this one is tricky as it is likely that you will not be able to take dumbbells out of your gym to do this. The solution is to mark off 3 meters (10

Feet) on the floor and go back and forth 134 times (each time across is one rep). Each time you drop or set it down do 5 burpees. If you're in a garage gym, go to your high school track and do this, or mark off a point 200m from your garage (you should already have this for 400m runs).

Hotel gyms... see above.

Champions Club Scaling Notes

RANT:

This one reminds me of the 400m walking lunge workout that used to come up. The name of the game on this one will be posture; neck straight, shoulders back/palms forward, and belly tight is our best position. Use this as a test to see how miserable staying in that position can be.

I SHOULD TRY THIS RX’D IF: I feel CrossFit owes me a grand after picking Fight Gone Bad for us twice in 4 months

ORGANIC SCALES:

Strength — heavy dumbbells and set down more often

Stamina — if this isn’t stamina then I don’t know what is

Endurance — lighter and maybe an 800

Flexibility — just paying extra attention to that neutral anatomical position

NEUROLOGICAL SCALES:

Coordination — check and make sure your shoe laces are tied

Accuracy — make sure kick is gentle to the handstand and not slamming against the wall

Agility — at first you wouldn’t think it would apply here, but just by adding stop-and-starts or right-angle turns can make it not only more difficult on the walk, but on your ability to keep position

Balance — walk on a line

GROUP VERSION: combine this one and the Tabata/L-sit one into a team workout. One partner does Farmer’s walks while the other does max time L-sit (every time you come down perform like 20 squats or something). I need to marinate on the exact numbers and format a bit.

WARMUP:

Again, with the low-skill stuff, use the warmup to practice the movements you suck at the most.

GENERAL FEAR LEVEL (1=REST DAY, 10=PR-DRIVEN FGB): 7. If you get the weight right, this one could be brutal is you ignore your entire body screaming at you.
