The 2019 CrossFit Health Conference

The 2019 CrossFit Health Conference will take place July 31 at the Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin.

Two years ago, CrossFit Health began its annual tradition of bringing together world-class thinkers from the scientific and CrossFit communities to explore the devolution of science and the ills of modern medicine. The first conference sought to educate members of the CrossFit community, the medical fraternity, policy makers, and other interested parties on topics including the shift from modern to postmodern science, the rise of the high-carb diet, and the brain’s regulation of exercise performance.

Last year, experts in various scientific fields discussed a range of topics, including the replication crisis, intermittent fasting, cancer as a mitochondrial metabolic disease, and the science behind the Paleo diet.

This year promises to enlighten attendees with new speakers and presentations on three central themes — the war on cholesterol and fat, the metabolic effects of low-carb diets, and the widespread sacrifice of scientific truth on the altar of the pharmaceutical industry — all through the lens of their personal experiences with “The Mess.”

The conference will begin with a live Skype interview with Dr. Uffe Ravnskov, who founded The International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics (THINCS) after serving as a whistleblower in the face of extreme pressure from the approved scientific consensus on Ancel Keys’ flawed diet-heart hypothesis. Ravnskov will answer questions and share stories about the scientific community’s efforts to silence him when he became critical of the popular anti-cholesterol literature.

Dr. Zoë Harcombe will follow Ravnskov with a comparison of what we’re told to eat with what the body of actual scientific evidence suggests we should eat. Dr. Malcolm Kendrick then will discuss the stakes of the medical world’s misguided support of the diet-heart hypothesis and the ensuing war on cholesterol and fat. Next, Dr. David Diamond will continue the discussion of the demonization of fat and cholesterol by reviewing the research on cholesterol-lowering statins — a multibillion-dollar industry — and their numerous adverse effects.

Prof. Peter Gøtzsche, a co-founder of the famous Cochrane Collaboration, will then describe his experiences with a scandal that rocked the scientific community. His story demonstrates how institutional corruption leads to the censorship of dissenting views and the end of free scientific debate.

Finally, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino will present on his discovery of the neuroprotective and anti-cancer effects of a ketogenic diet, which he observed while studying strategies to enhance the safety and performance of Navy SEAL divers breathing high-pressure oxygen.

The day will include question-and-answer sessions with the speakers and chances to network and exchange ideas with other like-minded members of the CrossFit community over coffee breaks and lunch.

I love that CrossFit is narrowing the focus on health but, as a Clinical & Health Psychologist it pains me that psychology isn't joining the narrative. The very definition of health includes mental wellness and CrossFit should also aspire to help alleviate negative symptoms and disorders that are affecting the general population (anxiety, depression, addiction, etc.). Because it's proven its positive effect in that sense!

I started a blog in November to talk about psychology applied to CrossFit in hopes of bridging the gap between the both of them.
