A New York Times article published in the 1990s encapsulated the fat-related hysteria of the day by recommending buttered movie popcorn come with a life insurance add-on. Meanwhile, Dr. Robert Atkins, creator of the Atkins diet, was touting a low-carb diet high in fat and ruffling more than a few feathers along the way. When Atkins died in 2003, his detractors were quick to blame his diet, even if that meant distorting the facts and breaching several codes of ethics.

In a significant victory for CrossFit affiliates and trainers, on June 30, 2020, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Occupational Freedom and Opportunity Act (HB 1193), permitting CrossFit trainers across the state to provide nutrition guidance to their members and clients. Previously, Florida law only permitted dietitians and other select licensed professionals to provide nutrition recommendations to their clients. CrossFit, Inc. has been actively engaged with this specific issue on behalf of its Florida affiliates and trainers and commends the state legislature and governor for this much-needed action.

Nathan Smith: Choose Life

Because academics “gain credit from publishing” and quantity is more important than quality, many publish closely related papers that add redundancy to medical research. This problem is compounded by pharmaceutical companies commissioning repeat publication of favorable studies. Though many think such practices are harmless, Richard Smith argues they lead to bias in the evidence doctors use to inform their treatment decisions. Treatments “may seem more effective than they are," which leads Smith to conclude redundant publication "pollutes medical evidence."

Matt Bickel: Cultivating Change

This June 2020 review by Ron Krauss, Arne Astrup, et al. concludes that guidelines to reduce saturated fat intake are not supported by a complete assessment of the evidence. Neither controlled studies nor mechanistic evidence indicates higher saturated fat intake increases risk of atherosclerosis or heart disease. Efforts to reduce saturated fat consumption may in fact harm public health by discouraging consumption of high-quality, nutrient-dense foods and implicitly encouraging consumption of refined grains and sugars — changes that are both more reliably linked to ill health than increased intake of saturated fat.
