Gary Taubes: Postmodern Infection of Science and the Replication Crisis

3

Gary Taubes is an award-winning investigative science and health journalist, and author of numerous books related to nutrition and the obesity epidemic. In this talk, delivered at the annual CrossFit Health Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, on July 31, 2018, Taubes turns a critical eye toward a more expansive subject, historicizing the corruption of postmodern science and examining the distinctions between good and bad scientific research.

Gary hits this squarely--his visual on the number of obesity papers, their increasing over time, and their inverse relationship to any meaningful science is penetrating (and heartbreaking.) Science has possibly been diffused beyond recovery as a reliable nutritional resource.

They’re asking her (the coach) if that’s really the WOD! This can’t be right! Right here, what’s this?!?! She like, “that’s it & you can’t change my mind!”

Still remember the first video of FatHeadMovie back in 2009 and many of CrossFit videos in collaboration with Taubes in 2011 or 2012. A decade later, there is a systems Engineer turned Lipid Geek (Dave Feldman) who performed multiple tests with multiple blood draws and created diagrams that makes all of what Taubes and Eades have been saying a lot more sense visually and conceptually.
