The world’s first major dietary guidelines were published in 1977 in the U.S. and were designed to help prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD). Those guidelines recommended greater consumption of carbohydrate and reduced consumption of fat. Nevertheless, as Americans and other populations around the world followed those macronutrient recommendations, rates of obesity and diabetes skyrocketed, reaching epidemic levels.
