In March, credentialed affiliate owners were put to the test to design their best CrossFit workout in hopes of being featured in the 2025 Community Cup.

Of the over 200 workouts submitted from around the world, only three were chosen.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY CUP?

Workout 1 Programmer: Derek Eason of CrossFit Train 97333

Derek Eason was introduced to CrossFit in 2011 as a junior in high school. During an anatomy and physiology class, his teacher gave the students an assignment to program a CrossFit workout.

“I did the assignment, but then I was like, ‘Wow, this is really cool!’”

That sparked his interest, and he began a deep dive into CrossFit, reading up on everything he could to learn more about the methodology. He started doing CrossFit.com workouts in his high school’s strength training class, and when he graduated and went to college at Oregon State University, Eason officially joined his first affiliate, CrossFit Train 97333

Because of his passion and knowledge of the methodology, Eason was asked to start coaching at the gym later that year by previous affiliate owner Brooke Kiefer Bergeson. Just over a year later, Bergeson had to plans to move to Colorado, and asked to sell the affiliate to Eason.

“I wanted the gym to still be there so I sort of thought, ‘I have to do it,’” he said.

In 2015, while finishing his degree in construction engineering, Eason took on the role of affiliate owner, with the goal of running the gym just as the previous owner did. Because of this, they didn’t lose any members through the transition.

“(The members) were all really supportive of me,” Eason said.

Eason is the gym’s main programmer, but he bases a lot of his workouts on CrossFit.com, which he likes to refer to as “his Bible.” It became a full-circle moment when one of his workouts was chosen as an official Community Cup workout for the world to participate in.

“I tried to think of things that I thought were appropriate after the Open. So, movements we didn’t see in the Open,” Eason said. “I did want to make it simple and classic.”

The Workout

As many rounds and reps as possible in 20 minutes of:

12 box step-overs

9 dumbbell snatches

3 hand-release push-ups

This is an example of the workout for the Rookie tier. You can see workout details for each level below.

Workout 2 Programmer: Seth Fifer of CrossFit Angola

Seth Fifer started CrossFit at CrossFit Pursuit in 2015 to train for the Police Academy.

“This is where I fell in love with the style of training and the community aspect that came from a CrossFit gym,” he said.

This got him thinking of how much his hometown, Angola, Indiana, needed a CrossFit affiliate. But while he kept thinking on that dream, he started coaching part-time at CrossFit Coldwater (previously CrossFit Pursuit) while pursuing his career in law enforcement. He eventually quit his job to become a full-time coach in the summer of 2018, focusing all of his time on opening a gym in Angola.

His dream became a reality just six months later. CrossFit Angola opened its doors in January 2019.

“I wanted people to look forward to exercising,” he said. “I wanted a very fun, loose, free, energetic environment.”

When the affiliate owner contest was released for the 2025 Community Cup, Fifer was on a road trip to Washington D.C., with one of his gym’s coaches.

“We had a 12-hour drive, so we’re like, ‘Let’s submit a workout,’” Fifer said.

The workout he submitted was based on the 2017 CrossFit Games workout “223 Intervals.” Using the same intervals and time domains, Fifer added other moments that encompass CrossFit, including weightlifting, monostructural moments, and gymnastics.

The Workout

Complete as many reps as possible following the interval of:

Workout 3 ProgrammerS: Abe Flores and Zach Minor of CrossFit OGC

Outcast Garage Coalition (CrossFit OGC) was built by the community for the community.

It all started when 40 people found themselves with a desire to do CrossFit but were without a gym. They would trade off training in each other’s garages until they finally decided to all start their own CrossFit gym.

The group met and voted on a board of directors, and all 40 athletes pitched in to help build the affiliate from the ground up.

CrossFit OGC opened in April 2023 as a co-op, which means there is no “one” owner, and the members help invest in the gym.

Why? To make CrossFit more affordable for athletes in California.

“We wanted a place to get together, do CrossFit, and have our community join us and grow together,” President of the Board Abe Flores said.

Flores and one of the gym’s coaches and programmers, Zach Minor, created the final workout for the 2025 Community Cup.

“Abe and I share the programming duties (at the affiliate), so the Community Cup contest was exciting,” Minor said.

Flores added, “We take pride in seeing other people do our workouts.”

The Workout

In 20 minutes, establish:

1-rep-max front squat

1-rep-max hang power clean
