NEW AS OF FEBRUARY 2026

We’re excited to announce that the next evolution of the Level 4 is here! This new virtual format replaces the previous in-person evaluation with an individualized coach development component that includes personalized feedback and a final virtual evaluation. Plan to dedicate two to three hours per week over four to six weeks to complete the process.

Due to the one-on-one nature of the program, we are accepting a limited number of candidates. Registration will close once spots are filled, with additional spots opening as candidates complete the process. If registration is full, join the waitlist, and we will notify you when space becomes available.

OVERVIEW

The Certified CrossFit Level 4 Coach (CF-L4) is the highest credential offered by CrossFit. It is for experienced trainers who have been coaching CrossFit in a group setting for several years. The credential is earned by trainers who have significant coaching experience, a comprehensive educational background, and CrossFit’s prerequisite certification — the Certified CrossFit Level 3 Trainer credential.

PREREQUISITES

  • Several years of coaching CrossFit in a group setting.
  • Current Certified CrossFit Level 3 Trainer.
  • Current CPR certificate with AED instruction.

PROCESS OVERVIEW

There are two phases in the Level 4 process:

Phase 1 – Assessment Phase

In the assessment phase, candidates are required to:

  • Submit a pre-assessment form and coaching video.
  • Complete the self-paced online Level 4 Coaches Prep.
    • Content covers topics related to effective coaching and application of coaching strategies to run a successful CrossFit class.
  • Complete three 90-minute one-on-one sessions with an assigned CrossFit assessor.
    • Sessions are designed to complement the online content and dive deeper into the application of coaching strategies to guide their development as a coach throughout the process.
    • Candidates will also be required to film and upload two additional coaching videos throughout the assessment phase.
    • All Level 4 assessors are CF-L4 trainers and members of CrossFit Seminar Staff.

Phase 2 – Evaluation Phase

In the evaluation phase, candidates are required to submit a pre-evaluation form and final coaching video. The Level 4 Evaluation Team will review and evaluate the candidate’s proficiency in six primary domains:

  • Teaching (to include demonstration)
  • Seeing
  • Correcting
  • Class Management
  • Presence and Attitude
  • Application

Candidates who meet the established passing requirements of the evaluation and successfully complete the assessment process will earn the CF-L4 trainer credential.

This online component can be completed in multiple sessions, but you must finish each module in one sitting– partial progress will not be saved. Candidates have SIX MONTHS from the date of registration to complete all CrossFit Level 4 requirements. In the case a candidate does not pass the Level 4 evaluation, he/she will have 12 MONTHS from the date of registration to retest, for up to two retest attempts. No extensions will be granted, so candidates should only register if they can commit the necessary time.

Note: Candidates may record their class videos in the language of their choice. However, the one-on-one assessment sessions are currently only offered in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The online Level 4 Coaches Prep is currently only offered in English.

  • The recertification application can be accessed no sooner than six months prior to the expiration date, and is not complete until payment is made and the certificant receives an email confirmation.
  • To recertify, certificants must meet the following requirements within their three-year recertification interval:
    • Abide by CrossFit Standards of Professional Practice
    • Maintain a current CPR/AED certificate
    • Complete 300 coaching hours and obtain 50 CEUs
    • Current recertification fees can be found HERE.

New Level 4 FAQs

  • You may register for the CF-L4 as long as you have a current CF-L3 at the time of registration. If your CF-L3 expires during the CF-L4 process and you pass the L4 evaluation, you will be awarded a CF-L4. However, if you do not pass the evaluation, you will need to ensure you have a current CF-L3 in order to register for the retest. Please review the CF-L3 recertification and late recertification requirements outlined in the CCFT Candidate Handbook.

  • There is no requirement for coaching hours in order to register for the evaluation.

Candidates must be 18 years or older, possess an active Certified CrossFit Level 3 Trainer (CF-L3) credential, and submit proof of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training completed within the last two years.

  • Holding the Certified CrossFit Trainer (CCFT) credential without the CrossFit Level 3 Trainer (CF-L3) designation does not meet the eligibility requirement. The CF-L3 credential is required.

To receive the CF-L3 designation, you must meet the education requirement for that credential. This includes earning the CrossFit Level 1 Certificate (CF-L1) and the CrossFit Level 2 Certificate (CF-L2).

  • Due to the nature of this evaluation, discounts cannot be offered.
