Dr. Aseem Malhotra, a leading cardiologist with the U.K.’s National Health Service, has led the way in citing obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease as frequent factors contributing to hospitalization among those with COVID-19.

He is the author of The 21-Day Immunity Plan: How to Rapidly Improve Your Metabolic Health and Resilience to Fight Infection.

Malhotra’s 21-day plan offers “a simple, clear, scientifically proven plan to boost metabolic health and help our immunity to the virus COVID-19.” He “brings us the good news that we can reverse our [ill] health and rapidly improve our resilience to infection and disease through just a few simple lifestyle changes — to our diet, how we exercise, sleep and reduce stress.”

In this interview with CrossFit Health’s Karen Thomson, Malhotra explains why COVID-19 is a “diet-related disease.” He then unpacks the three-fold aim of his book:

  1. Highlighting how conditions related to excess body fat affect the immune system and explaining why poor metabolic health can be equated with poor immune health.
  2. Giving people something positive they can act upon so they know they can reverse health conditions associated with the worst COVID-19 outcomes within 21 days.
  3. Emphasizing that in order to fix the health-care system, we need to fix our relationship with food.

Malhotra’s book is available as an audiobook or for Kindle via Amazon. It is also available in paperback in the U.K.

Really nice interview. It's great that Dr. Malhotra's book has been well-received and become a best seller. It's such an important message that we can improve our metabolic health and immune function rapidly. We have locked down most of the world for more than six months- an amount of time sufficient for most people to implement this plan and benefit from it.

95% of the public health message has been on mask wearing and hand washing. I'm in favor of both of these, but neither will protect against diabetes, heart disease and other chronic conditions that take more lives than Covid. Another 4% of the talk has been about vitamins and other small (but potentially useful) factors. The biggest factors are diet and exercise, and they've received the least attention. Dr. Malhotra has been shouting this message since early on in the pandemic and it's nice to hear he's found an audience.

I love this notion of ultra processed foods as appetite stimulants that lack nutrition.
