At CrossFit, We Don’t Negotiate On This and Neither Should You

Just wanted to use today’s rest day to throw out a few thoughts. I’ve been doing CrossFit off and on for the past 2 yeard, but over the past month or so I’ve really been sticking to it consistently—and it’s been hitting different this time around. I come from more of a football and strength training background—linear progressions, written programs, etc. For a long time I was caught in that mindset, always trying to follow or build the “perfect” program, but I could never seem to stick to it.

CrossFit’s been helping me break out of that. At first, I still tried to treat it like a rigid program with structured progressions, but I’ve started to actually learn about the method behind it, and the constant variation finally started to click. I’ve been feeling more capable—not just in workouts but in everyday stuff too. Physically I can handle more, sure, but I’ve also noticed I’m handling stress better and just adapting to challenges in a healthier way.

I’m planning to start mixing in some running and other focused work soon, mainly to support some specific goals I’ve got—like weight loss and prepping for a career path that demands both endurance and overall fitness. But CrossFit is staying at the core. It’s something I look forward to every day. Whether I’m making huge progress or just showing up to put in work, it’s keeping me grounded and helping me move forward. Appreciate having this space to share—if anyone’s been in a similar place, I’d love to hear your take too.

Hunter, one of CF’s many benefits is its rigid non-adherence to a rigid, or even semi-rigid program. Hence every day is different and unpredictable, hence boredom never sets in, and thus it’s much easier to stick with. When I was a runner, I ran religiously…for a few months, till boredom set in. Same with a traditional lifting regimen. 15+ years into CF…and mostly eager every day. It may or may not optimize for a specific desired physical outcome, but working out more often than not optimizes for fitness and health, even if my 1rm squat or biceps suffer. That’s a small price to pay.
