Ancel Keys' Cholesterol Con, Part 4

Dr. Timothy Noakes continues to examine the events leading up to the academic world’s acceptance of Ancel Keys’ unproven diet-heart hypothesis. Beginning with the Framingham Heart Study in 1948, Noakes then discusses the contributions of John Gofman, Edward Ahrens, and Norman Jolliffe while analyzing how their work became supplanted by a reductionistic model in which just one causative factor — cholesterol — could be considered of overwhelming importance to the study of heart disease.

Awesome Zachary! Thank you for sharing your story and L1 experience. I love hearing that you're able to enjoy doing stuff with your kids now. Your after school program is so important. How to move and what to eat are life lessons that will stick with those kids. Thanks for your work!

Great series. Thank you. One of the things that was also attributing to the increase in CHD, was the increase in cigarettes and smoking . Eisenhower smoked 4 packs a day. This might also have been the case with the US soldiers killed in the Korean War.

Fascinating that you note John Gofman considered carbohydrates as a possibile underlying factor for CHD. What an interesting alternate history we'd be living today if only Ancel Keys were not so cunning in his takeover of CHD research!

With regards to President Eisenhower, in his farewell address at the end of his presidency, he warned of the dangers of the military-industrial complex:

“We must not fail to comprehend its grave implications we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence…The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

If only he had foreseen the dangers of the processed foods industry. America’s worst enemies couldn’t inflict even a fraction of the damage on the American people as our food and beverage companies have. That these companies have infiltrated the AHA, CDC and WHO is scandalous.

Dang good squat form Mr. Lewis! Butt is going back and knees are staying out the whole way through, even on thrusters. I actually had two of the same instructors for my Level 1 back in March. Jen and Andrew Charlesworth. Both really good at what they do.

I’m glad that someone realized today should be a rest day. My body is literal trash right now
