Dr. Paul J. Rosch, 1927 - 2020

3

Dr. Paul J. Rosch, born June 30, 1927, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020. In addition to pioneering work in the fields of psychiatry and stress, Dr. Rosch was a member of the International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics and a fearless critic of the diet-heart hypothesis. CrossFit, Inc. and the CrossFit community were honored to know and support Dr. Rosch as an intellectual champion and friend.

Dr. Maryanne Demasi recently interviewed Dr. Paul Rosch about his efforts to combat the lipid hypothesis, his understanding of the real causes of heart disease, and his views on what it means to be a pioneer who is willing to reject prevailing scientific dogma. Here, Demasi shares highlights from that interview, as well as her personal reflections on Dr. Rosch’s vast contributions to science and health.

There are many people that I have "met" on the Internet but sadly never had the chance to meet in person, but I always admire those who stick doggedly to the task of scientific truth and honesty even in the face of denigration and vilification. Those who swim against the tide will always struggle, and Paul was in one sense a modern Galileo. His wisdom will be greatly missed but those who remain must continue his work.

Rosch is a big loss for humanity. It is important for the public to recognize that most of the "scientific" research in favor of cholesterol-lowering statins is flawed and fraudulent (eg, read the work of Rosch or Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD).

The most reliable evidence has long tied statin use with memory problems, muscle disorders, liver damage, cataracts, nerve damage, arterial calcification, pancreatitis, erectile dysfunction, brain dysfunction, diabetes, and with an increased risk of cancer and higher mortality.  There are practically no, or only marginal, benefits from these toxic drugs.

The physiological mechanisms of how statins do serious damage are also well understood, such as by their impairment of oxidative cell metabolism, the increase in inflammation and cell destruction, the lowering of cholesterol and sex hormone production, the promotion of pancreatic injury, etc. - rather thoroughly explained in this scholarly article by a published author of the Orthomolecular Medicine News organization, on how statins, and a cholesterol-lowering popular diet pill advertised by Dr. Oz, promote diabetes at https://www.supplements-and-health.com/garcinia-cambogia-side-effects.html - look at Figure 7 to see how irrational it is to block the production of cholesterol!

Yet despite of the existence of that scientific knowledge, the medical business and the public health authorities keep ignoring it and, for example, continue to recommend statins to diabetics and make claims that they have a low risk profile despite that they are also significantly linked to cancer and higher mortality (just look at the propaganda put out by the Mayo clinic on statin drugs: "the risk of life-threatening side effects from statins is very low").

And because of such medical propaganda, few people are aware that the medical claims of benefits of statins are mostly based on junk studies conducted by people with vested interests. And, logically, it's mostly the corporate medical business and other people with similar vested interests tied to it (eg, mouthpieces, hacks) who promote the alleged value of these highly lucrative products.

Also, older people with HIGH cholesterol live longer than those with low cholesterol levels (see above mentioned article for numerous scientific study references confirming this).

Because the cholesterol-heart disease theory, or rather medical dogma, is wrong, the use of statins is also wrong by logical extension.

So the real truth is that statins have almost no real benefit in the very vast majority of users. They do more harm than good (read the cited book by Rosch and others, or Uffe Ravnskov's "The Cholesterol Myths" and Malcolm Kendrick's "The Great Cholesterol Con"). It's one of many "scientific" scams of the criminal mainstream medical business.

Sam,

You are right. Great response.

In my opinion, it is medical malpractice, amoral and unethical to be in any way associated with the prescription and/or delivery of statin drugs.

With Paul's passing the world has lost a brilliant scientist, a great man, my friend & mentor. Paul demanded integrity and accuracy in science. He had no tolerance for the deception underlying the demonization of cholesterol and the peddling of statins to the masses.

I was close with Paul for almost a decade. I was honored to be a co-author with him on our joint publications on heart disease and cholesterol.

I had the pleasure to be with him at our first conference together in Saudi Arabia in 2012. I’ll never forget when a cardiologist/speaker at that meeting was promoting statin effectiveness using inflated relative risk values. Paul stood up and pointed his finger at the speaker and said with such great force – you are deceiving these people! You are leading them to believe statins have great benefits, when in fact statins are harmful and their benefits are meager. The speaker and crowd were taken aback by this small elderly man who spoke with such authority.

I’m glad I was able to make a tribute to him at a CrossFit talk I gave in 2018. I cherished our time together, he inspired me and he helped me to be a better scientist. Paul has left a legacy for others to follow in his footsteps, to promote integrity in all aspects of scientific inquiry.

Paul Rosch was a true pioneer in the arena of rational evaluation of the lipid hypothesis. And like many true pioneers, he took a few arrows in the back, but he persevered. Despite antagonism and attacks from those who stood to profit from chimera of LDL reduction at all cost, he continued to fight and publish till the end. With his passing, science has lost a voice for truth and transparency, a voice that will be much missed by those who seek to restore the integrity of scientific inquiry.

Testing the recovery protocol. 4 rounds, no timer of:

Static hang, 15 seconds

5 push-ups

5 burpees

30 step toe taps, 12”

10 kettlebell swings, 25#

20 hip thrusts

10 sit-ups, no anchor

5 box jumps, 12”

Being able to do the jumps at all has me pretty happy! Felt the work but not wiped out.

Mike and two ultimate frisbee teammates were killed by a speeding and distracted driver on the highway. They were stopped in traffic for an accident that had happened up ahead. That was saturday night, Feb. 29th. He was pronounced the next day, March 1st. We were best friends from school, college, boy scouts, and sports. We started CrossFit in 2010 together and have never stopped since. We would go on "Box Jumping" trips where we would visit 3-10 gyms in a weekend/week (spring break). He had just began coaching officially at an affiliate here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also had just got a spot on a pro ultimate frisbee team, the Detroit Mechanix. For weeks he has been telling me about his PRs in the gym, muscle-ups, snatches, fran, annie, deadlifts. He was true crossfitter.

"Annie" was Mike's favorite workout.

Today, crossfitters from all over did a workout for him "Annie" or "Mike C." Which was based one a workout he did the best at, at his gym Luminary.

Mike C.

800m

Then ,12 rounds of

10 burpees

25 double Unders

Then, 800m run

I wrote this for/about him. I understand no one here knows or will know him. But having crossfitters from all over recognizing him, means a whole lot.

'Often we do not get to do what we want.

For Mike, he wanted to do and learn all things CrossFit and ultimate. He wanted good times with friends, family, and Sammy (his girlfriend). He made his life thrive with these important things and people.

This memorial merges these groups and gives us a chance to celebrate the good times we all have had. They have a lot in common. We have a lot in common. Mike saw it.

The communities are not something that most would think about when joining something. But it finds you. The CrossFit and Ultimate community are two groups that are constantly growing. Both, against the norm, yet, so inclusive.

These are a few things Mike was attracted to. They are special and mean a lot to him. I am so honored to be able to participate together with friends, family and everyone.

Mike was a fan of the sport in CrossFit. He also understood the potential it had to make peoples live better through eating and moving well. It was just as tough physically as it was mentally. He applied what he learned 'so' efficiently. When Mike started playing ultimate, he adapted quickly to the technical skills and game tactics.

CrossFit and Ultimate were a constant source of mystery, exploring, and learning for him. They gave Mike places where he was comfortable, and, to let himself shine as bright as he ever could. Sammy and I both have seen him process and operate in these environments. He was quite, sure (not really) but he was mighty (always). He never let one hard thing stop him, no matter the hurdle. He strived to be a master of his domains.

In the scout law it states "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight." You might notice this is how Mike lived. It isn't only the way he lived but the things he did to learn and understand that made us all love this incredible man. He listened, he gave his all. By doing that, he has brought all of us together.

Woogity Woogity.'
