CrossFit, Inc. Suspends Use of Facebook and Associated Properties

ByCrossFitMay 23, 2019

CrossFit is a contrarian physiological and nutrition prescription for improving fitness and health. It is contrarian because prevailing views of fitness, health, and nutrition are wrong and have unleashed a tsunami of chronic disease upon our friends, family, and communities. The voluntary CrossFit community of 15,000 affiliates and millions of individual adherents stands steadfastly and often alone against an unholy alliance of academia, government, and multinational food, beverage, and pharmaceutical companies.

CrossFit, Inc. defends relentlessly the right of its affiliates, trainers, and athletes to practice CrossFit, build voluntary CrossFit associations and businesses, and speak openly and freely about the ideas and principles that animate our views of exercise, nutrition, and health. This website—and, until recently, CrossFit’s Facebook and Instagram accounts—has long catalogued CrossFit’s tireless defense of its community against overreaching governments, malicious competitors, and corrupt academic organizations.

Recently, Facebook deleted without warning or explanation the Banting7DayMealPlan user group. The group has 1.65 million users who post testimonials and other information regarding the efficacy of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. While the site has subsequently been reinstated (also without warning or explanation), Facebook’s action should give any serious person reason to pause, especially those of us engaged in activities contrary to prevailing opinion.

Facebook and its properties host and oversee a significant share of the marketplace of public thought. To millions of individuals and communities across the world, Facebook and its properties remain the platforms where ideas and information are exchanged. Facebook thus serves as a de facto authority over the public square, arbitrating a worldwide exchange of information as well as overseeing the security of the individuals and communities who entrust their ideas, work, and private data to this platform. This mandates a certain responsibility and assurance of good faith, transparency, and due process.

CrossFit, Inc., as a voluntary user of and contributor to this marketplace, can and must remove itself from this particular manifestation of the public square when it becomes clear that such responsibilities are betrayed or reneged upon to the detriment of our community. Common decency demands that we do so, as do our convictions regarding fitness, health, and nutrition, which sit at the heart of CrossFit’s identity and prescription. To this end, all activity on CrossFit, Inc.’s Facebook and Instagram accounts was suspended as of May 22, 2019, as CrossFit investigates the circumstances pertaining to Facebook’s deletion of the Banting7DayMealPlan and other well-known public complaints about the social-media company that may adversely impact the security and privacy of our global CrossFit community.

These publicly sourced complaints include but are not limited to the following:

1.  Facebook collects and aggregates user information and shares it with state and federal authorities, as well as security organizations from other countries.

2.  Facebook collaborates with government security agencies on massive citizen surveillance programs such as PRISM.

3.  Facebook censors and removes user accounts based on unknown criteria and at the request of third parties including government and foreign government agencies.

4.  Facebook collects, aggregates, and sells user information as a matter of business. Its business model allows governments and businesses alike to use its algorithmically conjured advertising categories as sophisticated data-mining and surveillance tools.

5.  Facebook’s news feeds are censored and crafted to reflect the political leanings of Facebook’s utopian socialists while remaining vulnerable to misinformation campaigns designed to stir up violence and prejudice.

6.  Facebook, as a matter of business and principle, has weak intellectual property protections and is slow to close down IP theft accounts.

7.  Facebook has poor security protocols and has been subject to the largest security breaches of user data in history.

And finally,

8.  Facebook is acting in the service of food and beverage industry interests by deleting the accounts of communities that have identified the corrupted nutritional science responsible for unchecked global chronic disease. In this, it follows the practices of Wikipedia and other private platforms that host public content but retain the ability to remove or silence—without the opportunity for real debate or appeal—information and perspectives outside a narrow scope of belief or thought. In this case, the approved perspective has resulted in the deaths of millions through preventable diseases. Facebook is thus complicit in the global chronic disease crisis.

For these reasons, CrossFit, Inc. has placed Facebook and its associated properties under review and will no longer support or use Facebook’s services until further notice.

Good call Greg! This Orwellian nightmare and censorship of “wrong think” will only get worse unless we take a stand. We are with you.

You all make it easier and easier for me to want to be apart CrossFit's community. Thank you!

Will LanierMay 24th, 2019 at 1:04 am

OUTWOD and The OUT Foundation support this move. Until Facebook alters their practices - large organizations will continue to fall off their platforms. Thanks CrossFit for always leading the charge.

I’m with it!

the powers of governments are not going to stop us !! ALL TOGETHER WE CAN !!

Matthew RyanMay 24th, 2019 at 1:26 am

Ballsy!!! Just don’t expect our professional athletes to follow. Many who make a decent part of their living from a constant stream of...as my wife calls it...”Crossfit Porn”....with associated endorsement deals. Fully agree with your argument. I’m sure you had long arguments about this course of action at headquarters. I’m not sure if withdrawing from the battlefield is the best course of action, but kudos for making the decision. Let’s see how it plays out...will we impact more people’s lives in a positive way by not being on the battlefield of social media.

Jeremiah DiPernaMay 24th, 2019 at 6:30 am

None of the (NFL MLB NHL NBA) athletes use Facebook.

Nathan MastersMay 24th, 2019 at 7:50 am

They're also all paid to compete in their respective sports. CF athletes not so much.

Christopher MurphyMay 24th, 2019 at 7:01 pm

they use the gram though.....

Getting proud to be a Crossfitter again. Nice move!

For those interested in an insider perspective on the unfolding social media dystopia, read, "Zucked - Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe" by Roger McNamee (https://www.amazon.com/Zucked-Waking-Up-Facebook-Catastrophe-ebook/dp/B07FC5BZYV/). McNamee was an early investor in Facebook and influential advisor to Mark Zuckerberg. When your own VC calls the outcome a dumpster fire, the dumpster is, indeed, on fire.

Grace PatenaudeMay 24th, 2019 at 1:41 am

Lead the way Coach! Lynne aka Mighty Mouse :-) I need to visit the Message Board; it’s been a while! The CF Message Board had fun banters and the best platform where polite discussions or polite discourse happened of truly like-minded folks.

Lynne PittsMay 24th, 2019 at 1:49 am

Grace!!! We will be re-energizing the board for sure.

Phill KiddooMay 24th, 2019 at 1:44 am

My loyalty in CrossFit has been restored!

Steven GoldieMay 24th, 2019 at 1:47 am

This is why Crypto is gaining ground. CrossFit should look into EOS, a company creating a decentralized social media platform where the owners of the profile own and control all their content. No person or company can look at it without your consent. There are already version live on the Blockchain now, such as Karma.

MIchael ThalmannMay 24th, 2019 at 1:50 am

Thank you, Greg Glassman. I got tired of no results and see CrossFit. I tried the workouts on my own and could never get an engine, but continued to put up slow ass benchmark times like 7 minute grace because, slow or not, it was more fun than a fucking arm day. Then I saw your video the purpose of CrossFit and learned. Then i saw chronic disease, we have the answer and I got better. I'm still going rogue in a globo gym and raising eye brows of oblivious Meatheads, but I'm carrying the message far and wide that you guys are making the best (and maybe only) organized, scientific, and measurable solution to health in the world. Your big fat middle finger in the face of anti common sense rhetoric is what makes people take note, and this shit's important.

Kai BrennerMay 24th, 2019 at 1:52 am

Nice coach! Support you 100%

Matthew GoldenMay 24th, 2019 at 2:00 am

5. Facebook’s news feeds are censored and crafted to reflect the political leanings of Facebook’s utopian socialists while remaining vulnerable to misinformation campaigns designed to stir up violence and prejudice. ^ That. Exactly that...

Michael WatsonMay 24th, 2019 at 4:59 pm

I was pleasantly surprised to see this included in their list of reasons.

Jonathan GonzalesMay 24th, 2019 at 2:06 am

Love it!

Rob JohnsonMay 24th, 2019 at 2:06 am

Just know I mentally hit “like” on this.

Roger HuffMay 24th, 2019 at 2:09 am

Brilliant, could not agree more.

Maile NelsonMay 24th, 2019 at 2:12 am

Sadly the RP diet seems to take precedence at our box, despite the success stories of many low carb members. Your speaker series at the MDL1 and DDC reinforce everything that I believe will get me to 100 years old. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for us Worldwide Greg.

Bobbi MillsapsMay 24th, 2019 at 2:29 am

To see just how far Facebook goes, check out the documentary "The Creepy Line" if you have access to amazon prime. It will change the way you think about Facebook, Google, and all of the "smart" devices we use to get us through the day. It was an eye opener.

Matthew SwiftMay 24th, 2019 at 2:31 am

Respect.

Michael SeewaldMay 24th, 2019 at 2:39 am

Yes sir.

Steven ThunanderMay 24th, 2019 at 2:48 am

I have seen what Facebook has done to members of certain political positions/parties, censoring them or outright banning them from their platforms. However, we have seen the power of what FB/instagram can do as far as marketing/messaging, and a replacement should be sought. An alternative FB like solution , such as USA.Life (Not an endorsement, just an example), and similar platforms (many country specific) should be considered to get the message out around the world. CrossFit helping prop up said alternatives would be good both for CrossFit and the FB replacements. Also, resurrecting the CrossFit board and updating it for 2019 would be a great idea.

Steven ThunanderMay 24th, 2019 at 2:52 am

Other Facebook alternatives: https://www.ionos.com/digitalguide/online-marketing/social-media/the-best-facebook-alternatives/ (WFS). Also the usa.life is WFS.

Benjamin JillsonMay 24th, 2019 at 2:55 am

I believe CrossFit has an incredible message to share but with the firing of numerous media/content creators and then the pulling away from multiple platforms that host billions of users how does CrossFit plan to best create content and share their message with the world going forward?

Angelina SalazarMay 24th, 2019 at 3:34 am

He leaves it to us :) the affiliates and everyday Crossfitters to carry the message

Benjamin JillsonMay 24th, 2019 at 3:13 pm

I understand that with or without social media those of us at the local affiliate need to carry the message but we can't deny the fact that CrossFit stepped away from a platform where they could instantly disseminate their message to millions of people.

Kevin WoodMay 24th, 2019 at 4:04 pm

What's the message? Can you be specific?

Travis PurdyMay 25th, 2019 at 1:57 am

Exactly, Kevin. What is CrossFit trying to tell everyone? Stepping away from a platform with access to almost a third of the world's population doesn't sound very helpful to CrossFit since they want to battle chronic disease, a worldwide problem.

Robert NorbryhnMay 24th, 2019 at 2:57 am

Good job coach, I support CrossFit 100%!

Roberta HughesMay 24th, 2019 at 3:07 am

Bravo!!

Ravikant DewanganMay 24th, 2019 at 3:19 am

Well done coach!! thanks for taking the stand!!

Angelina SalazarMay 24th, 2019 at 3:28 am

This is why I believe in CrossFit!!! Stay uncorrupted and strong!!! I got rid of social media and encourage many to do the same! This makes me so proud and is why I will always defend CrossFit and all it stands for!

JENS MEULENGRACHTMay 24th, 2019 at 3:47 am

Very admirable decision. Good to see Crossfit stands for freedom.

Jeremy SmolaMay 24th, 2019 at 3:48 am

Outstanding!!

Jenn CleggMay 24th, 2019 at 3:50 am

Here, here! Thank you for taking a stand against the evil we call social media.

Carly KeyesMay 24th, 2019 at 3:54 am

Bravo.

Marlon SarmientoMay 24th, 2019 at 4:04 am

I'm with it Coach. Thank you.

Robbie SouthardsMay 24th, 2019 at 4:09 am

Ok... So when are you going to post all the Seminar pictures like before (before FB page CrossFit Training)? This used to be an awesome thing to see every Monday, now it's been non-existent. (or is there a different place it's posted?)

Lynne PittsMay 24th, 2019 at 4:57 am

They'll be back soon, Robbie.

Luke BrimmageMay 24th, 2019 at 4:11 am

I love this and one more reason, of the hundreds why I’m addicted to Crossfit and truth!!

Belinda GeisslerMay 24th, 2019 at 4:17 am

Good job and solid rationale.

Mark LevyMay 24th, 2019 at 4:39 am

I love Crossfit! Lead by example. Thank you. Facebook, Google, Amazon..etc too much power corrupts and Facebook in particular has shown incredible, brazen use of collected data. I need to wean myself off all of this stuff.

Rose RyeMay 24th, 2019 at 4:54 am

Yet another elegant solution. This hits so many nails on the head...standing ovation!!

Jesse MontagninoMay 24th, 2019 at 5:02 am

Cheers! Never give up the moral high ground, Mr. Glassman.

Lisa HetheringtonMay 24th, 2019 at 6:00 am

I don't disagree with what HQ and Coach has done and the reasons for it. Just would have maybe liked an email heads up to affiliate owners. Members come to me asking and I had to say I don't know and then they had to read it via Morning Chalk Up. I love the way HQ fights the big fights but maybe consider some comms to the affiliates who are on the ground doing the work as well. I run my little affiliate to the same original values of the origins of CF, it's about wellness and living a full life and we enjoy the games as a spectacle but my members know the difference. I'll always be loyal to CF and the methodology.

Ramnik SinghMay 24th, 2019 at 6:08 am

Greeting from India! I completely agree with Coach Greg Glassman and his initiative to change the world of fitness. It’s not easy but together we all, who believes in CrossFit methodology can help spread awareness for good.

Daniel OberprielerMay 24th, 2019 at 7:01 am

So...fight against IN their house and don‘t leave the battle field. Much more people will suppport you on social media than elsewhere. Think about it.

Travis PurdyMay 25th, 2019 at 1:59 am

Thank you!

Shane CouttsMay 24th, 2019 at 7:18 am

QUOTE … “Recently, Facebook deleted without warning or explanation the Banting7DayMealPlan user group.” “Facebook’s action should give any serious person reason to pause, especially those of us engaged in activities contrary to prevailing opinion.” Greg Glassman, you did the exact same thing to 15 000 Affiliates!! And yes, deleting the CrossFit FB & Insta pages without so much as a polite email explaining your direction should give all affiliates serious reason to pause!!

Hari SinghMay 24th, 2019 at 8:09 pm

I own one of the 15,000 affiliates and I see nothing but good that will come from this. The job of any good CEO is to recognize existential threats to the organization. Becoming increasingly dependent on Facebook put CrossFit at the mercy of a business that has proven itself to be an unfair and unreliable partner.

Maximus LewinMay 24th, 2019 at 11:59 pm

Not telegraphing it had the effect of getting tons of free publicity and getting people to think about the issue at hand. As an Affiliate I have no issues with it. Hi Hari!

Sam WareMay 24th, 2019 at 8:34 am

YES!

Alexander ChadwickMay 24th, 2019 at 9:55 am

100 % agreed. I’m proud member of CrossFit community. Together we are unbeatable

James WatsonMay 24th, 2019 at 10:00 am

100% support for Glassman here

Brian CampbellMay 24th, 2019 at 10:20 am

I stand with you 100% Coach. Never before have I felt so aligned with a person, group, mission, and plan as I do with CrossFit.

Steven WingoMay 24th, 2019 at 10:52 am

I await, with interest, what CrossFit plans to do or use as an alternative means of prevalent communication with the public and its affiliates and adherents. I’ve always admired Coach Glassman for his principled governance of CrossFit, whether I agreed with his views or not. Most of the time I have, but not always. He could have easily sold out for a walk away payday to private equity or jacked up prices on affiliates to suck more money (rent seeking) out of the CrossFit ecosystem. But he has instead used his business to further the public good, call attention to corruption in the corporate and academic world, and stand up against overreaching governmental actions. Stepping away from Facebook and Instagram is yet another bold step. But I have found those platforms very convenient for me and a great tool to learn as a coach, particularly with the Instagram sites of the CrossFit specialty groups and departments (I.e. gymnastics, weightlifting, CrossFit Training, etc.). I hope there is an alternative communications strategy in the works to allow for such ubiquitous communication with the CrossFit world and to continue to expand our community and it’s knowledge. I am in general familiar with blockchain and decentralized storage and governance it allows, which appears to be a potential better alternative and solution to the problems created by centralized data storage and governance in the hands of so few people controlling the flow of info at the whims of their own closely guarded algorithms. Hopefully there is a plan for a better long term alternative or alternatives. Or maybe Facebook/Instagram will get its act together someday. At any rate, thank you CrossFit for fighting for your beliefs and a better world. If all individuals, businesses, politicians and individuals governed themselves as principled as does Crossfit, as opposed to letting greed and the will to gain and retain power at any cost direct their actions, the world would be a better place.

Joana MontenegroMay 24th, 2019 at 11:30 am

I loved the fact that Facebook kept me easily connected to Crossfit Inc and I rely on Facebook a ton at this point. And I hate that. Hate that Facebook is what it is, corrupt, disingenuous, controlling and essentially owns how we all interact at this point. The original premise was awesome. What it is now - sickening. And by the way, I am part of the food and beverage industry. I am also a crossfitter. Talk about going behind enemy lines.....but someone needs to be on the inside trying to drive change.

William CresswellMay 24th, 2019 at 11:31 am

Thank you! These guys deserve a lot worse but that's well deserved ban from my workout space at least.

Chris NostrandMay 24th, 2019 at 12:24 pm

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I haven’t used Facebook in years. I hate what they stand for and they’re hypocritical points of view. Thank you removing yourself and encouraging your followers to do the same.

Margaret PatchinMay 24th, 2019 at 12:59 pm

Given the prevalence of pseudoscientific groups and propaganda on Facebook (anti vaxxers, people drinking urine, people drinking turpentine, people who say you can cure autism with bleach, actually dangerous diets, vitamin b17, etc.) I find the fact that Facebook pulled a page that presumably was reported, checked it and put it back up to be comforting. There are things that self described health groups are actively advertising that are blatantly dangerous.

Matthew KirkpatrickMay 24th, 2019 at 1:19 pm

Facebook is like anything else. It will come and go. And even if it doesn't, ultimately it is our decision if we want to participate. I canceled all that stuff awhile ago and am a happier person without it. All the negativity gets into our psyches, I think. This could be a great opportunity for someone to start a social media platform that isn't so corrupt. I would love to be a member of a site like that.

Mycahya EgglestonMay 24th, 2019 at 1:29 pm

Wow, I am blown away by how articulate and inspiring this message was. I have been off Facebook for some time now and agree 100% with your assessment!

Jon CohenMay 24th, 2019 at 1:56 pm

I love CrossFit, but still putting forth the persona of the underdog is a little silly at this point. 15,000 affiliates and millions of members, you’re not a scrappy insurgency with a barbell and a dream anymore. And pretending like you are blunts any message you’re trying to spread.

Tyler HassMay 24th, 2019 at 9:04 pm

I would counter and say that CrossFit is 15,000 independently run underdogs. CrossFit HQ is going up against massive corporations, like the big soda companies, who spend millions rigging the system to their benefit. That these companies are bigger and have been doing it a long time makes it all the more impressive what CrossFit has done so far. Having the truth on your side helps tremendously, but it can only get you so far in political battles.

Maximus LewinMay 24th, 2019 at 2:19 pm

Hey Greg, One of your ten year plus guys here. I applaud this move, foremost because I agree FB is run by Utopian Socialists, and we all know how well that always works out. I don't think I can yet escape the orbit of FB yet, but I would love to! It is a toxic echo chamber. I wanted to weigh in on the design and message of the new "What is CrossFit" page. It is simply put, fantastic. From the framing of CrossFit as a "lifestyle" (not a quikc fix) to the words "safe and effective" and the inclusion of pictures of normal people in real gym settings, it perfectly on point. This is the type of message that will actually help the Affiliates in my opion. I posted it to the Affiliate Owners Only page on FB and it generated 130 likes and 100% positive reaction on that forum, which is ONLY currently active Affiliates. Several people reported they reposted the page and immediately got shares or even prospects. One person reported filling up an On-Ramp by using it. One suggestion: I would ask that every link on that page lead to the Affiliate Map, that will get real people in front of us better than anything. Or, at the very least, add the "find a box" button underneath every other button. I would also put "Find a CrossFit Gym" as not everyone knows what a "Box" is. While I agree there is a place for the Sport and "At-Home" pieces of CF, I would want to see the messaging of the "What is CrossFit" front and center on the main page. And I can tell you the overwhelming majority of the CF Affiliate communitly agrees. The off-putting and intimidating bros and broettes of the "Mess You Up" era have long been counter-productive to building our businesses and bringing the message of CF to the people. And while well-intentioned, the geriatric Al Bundy Antifreeze Jug workouts are even less helpful (in terms of bringing people into Affiliates). Again, kudos on both escaping Planet FB and on the stellar messaging of the "What Is" page.

Michael WaldmannMay 24th, 2019 at 2:39 pm

Well done

Marcio AtallaMay 24th, 2019 at 3:14 pm

Congrats!!! We are with you.

Susan StandardMay 24th, 2019 at 3:23 pm

YES! Totally agree

Cynthia RennoldsMay 24th, 2019 at 3:29 pm

Well done! Facebook needs to be held accountable and we as individuals do not have a large enough voice to do so. It is only when large communities such as CrossFit and other large communities refuse to participate in a public square that is biased that changes will be made to that bias. Well done across Fit!

Imanuel RenzMay 24th, 2019 at 3:43 pm

Great move!!!

Jonata FerreiraMay 24th, 2019 at 4:05 pm

This is great! Deleted fb a long time ago.

Olivia LeonardMay 24th, 2019 at 4:53 pm

A great, thoughtful piece on Pedestrian.tv this morning: https://www.pedestrian.tv/news/can-crossfit-make-quitting-facebook-part-of-its-lifestyle-brand/ But with its pointed statement, and its history of tackling other major corporations like Coca-Cola, CrossFit’s condemnation of Facebook raises a new question: what happens when quitting Facebook is presented as a legitimate health and lifestyle issue? …the Quit Facebook movement, like Quit Sugar and Quit Soda before it, is bigger than it has been in the past. In the same way that doing the WOD, going paleo, eating high fat, and kicking sugar have become associated with the CrossFit lifestyle, leaving Facebook – and then Instagram – might too. What happens when leaving Facebook is more than a pledge or a commitment amongst friends, or advice handed out that no one actually pays attention to? What happens when deplatforming yourself, even partially, becomes about health of self and of society? …CrossFit may be the first multinational corporation to reject the platform to suggest doing so could actually make you a better person. In 2017, Glassman said he saw CrossFit affiliate gyms as “a lifeboat against a tsunami of chronic disease.” CrossFit’s new stance casts Facebook as part of that rising tide. It remains to be seen if any other companies will jump in the lifeboat with them. I love CrossFit’s rejection of the-world-as-it-is. The enumerated reasons in this post are more than enough to take a principled stand against Facebook’s corporate practices; the greater statement may be in the willingness to step away from a platform that indulges and profits from the weakest tendencies of human nature (individual and collective).

Jake RowleyMay 24th, 2019 at 6:10 pm

Crossfit Inc seriously needs to look at Howdoo as an alternative option for social media/marketing/subscriptions etc. Full control of content and amalgamates all features of IG, FB, twitter and youtube. No wasting time of different platforms and put more time into the amazing content being delivered https://medium.com/howdoo/howdoo-insider-episode-09-new-overview-video-ccef5e5a7d2a

John HembreeMay 24th, 2019 at 7:08 pm

Good call. I hope many more do the same.

Ray HochstetlerMay 24th, 2019 at 7:10 pm

Do it!

erik larsonMay 24th, 2019 at 7:28 pm

Great job!!!

Joe MartinMay 24th, 2019 at 7:59 pm

Love this! I will stand with you, CrossFit!

Federico GonzalezMay 24th, 2019 at 8:24 pm

WoW !! awesome ! it´s like having a rude DAD!! I really want to be a CrossFiter!! but a real one , like Greg Glassman !!

Bruce WarrenMay 24th, 2019 at 8:45 pm

Outstanding! Pleased to see our outfit leading the way against FB's propaganda.

Rebecca ImreMay 24th, 2019 at 9:04 pm

Thank you so much for taking this stand! I'm so tired of companies falling into line because they are terrified of SM giants. Your courageous stand encourages many people to act on their beliefs and refuse to be bullied. I liked CrossFit before, but now you have my enthusiastic support!

Victor CondezoMay 24th, 2019 at 9:17 pm

Good for you! I'm done with them too!

Joe DanielsMay 24th, 2019 at 9:47 pm

Cant wait to see where this goes.

Bob ForkishMay 24th, 2019 at 10:54 pm

Thank you Crossfit! OrionTulchin's post (just prior to mine) states my feelings explicitly! Yet, unhealthy practices always succumb to natural law, so there is hope :- )

Leslie StricklandMay 24th, 2019 at 11:13 pm

Hi, I’ve been a member for about 9 mos. I really love it and I absolutely appreciate this article. Are we allowed to send an email to the owner or an administrator to wrote this?

Maximus LewinMay 25th, 2019 at 12:05 am

At least on moble there is mailto link.

Christopher O'BrienMay 25th, 2019 at 12:26 am

Thank you , Greg.

Bo CampaMay 25th, 2019 at 12:45 am

I don't always agree with everything CF does, but I'm with you 100% on this. Facebook's forced imposition of their views and values on users and censorship to force their agenda down our throats is Orwellian. Use your own platforms, fans will happily follow you there.

Bruce GrayMay 25th, 2019 at 1:03 am

Orwellian is exactly the right word.

Bruce GrayMay 25th, 2019 at 1:01 am

I want to thank Crossfit for suspending association with fakebook fascistbook. They and other social media behemoths, have removed all doubt they are focused on social and political engineering, and manipulating, exploiting, and deceiving individuals across the world. These organizations have a sociopathic arrogance and fascist mindset that I never thought I would see again in my life time. I truly am concerned about the future of Western civilization and what younger generations are being deluded into accepting. I have always believed that a healthy body is necessary for a healthy mind and healthy self esteem, positive outlook, and standing up for your own interests in the face of tyranny. The crossfit community have the courage and kahunas to stand up tall and strong, and say no more to the tyranny that threatens democracy and free speech everywhere. Power to you in recognizing the threat posed by these greed driven subversive oppressors, and DOING something bold and courageous about it. Hopefully your move marks the turning of the tide, and leaving these 'fascists by stealth' high and dry. Long live the sanctity of individual rights, free speech, and democracy.

Maximus LewinMay 25th, 2019 at 1:53 am

Yes Sir!

JENS MEULENGRACHTMay 25th, 2019 at 3:06 am

Fear (mental weakness) drives people to accept tyranny.

Alexander BalkhMay 25th, 2019 at 3:09 pm

Well put, dude.

Michael VanceMay 25th, 2019 at 2:09 am

Thank you CrossFit! It’s so refreshing to see a big company stand up for free speech and independent thought.

David DukesMay 25th, 2019 at 3:01 am

Thank you for having integrity.

Daniel McLaughlinMay 25th, 2019 at 4:00 am

You have a new fan. Hopefully this becomes an avalanche of companies and users rejecting them.

Karen ChessMay 25th, 2019 at 8:17 am

Congratulations on standing up to the Goliath of the Ministry of Truth! It caused me to check your website to see how I might support CrossFit; this is a wonderful site! I love the information you are publishing! I will share it (via email) with my friends.

Michele BalcombMay 25th, 2019 at 8:34 am

George Orwell ‘s 1984 is here, just it’s not the governments controlling everything, it’s private companies & their wealth! Make a stand where you can is all anyone can do....

Joseph GortonMay 25th, 2019 at 1:06 pm

Only way to get Facebook to change is to hit them in the wallet. If more companies do this, maybe they'll change some of their policies.

Henry NaizerMay 25th, 2019 at 2:40 pm

There is another platform you can join in lieu of Facebook - USA.Life

Alexander BalkhMay 25th, 2019 at 3:07 pm

This just won me over, I finally made an account. Calling out the socialist censorship is a bold move and one that needs to be widespread.

Patrick RikliMay 25th, 2019 at 3:09 pm

Outstanding work. Another indication that we are on the right side of free thought.

Matt MechamMay 25th, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I first found CrossFit around 2007 and quickly became a fan of not only the workouts but also the ethos and community. I own one of the leading independent community platforms with a direct upgrade path from the existing forums. I would be proud to help CrossFit revitalise it’s own community and take back control from social media. As always CrossFit leads the way. The next few months will see an exodus of brands from Facebook.

Chris HilesJuly 7th, 2019 at 3:49 pm

I don't think the CF community is in any need of "revitalisation", it's pretty healthy and powerful, as this action proves. That said, if you offer a viable alternative in which stupidity and ignorance is intelligently ridiculed, rather than suppressed or removed, it would be a major step forward. I don't believe there will be a major exodus of brands from FB, I think FB is already too big for that and the masses are too stupid to realise just how corrupt it is. However, I would be extremely happy to be proven completely wrong about this opinion. We live in hope. Good luck.

Troy JonesMay 25th, 2019 at 4:53 pm

friendster.IO Tokenized Social Media Revolution. No censorship! Get paid in tokens to interact...... F - Facebook. Social media revolution has begun! Why we built this platform. We feel the same way :) Selling our information, blocking accounts because we are Crypto based. Your Friends at friendster.IO

Suzanne OsborneMay 25th, 2019 at 5:15 pm

TBH I've heard of CrossFit but know nothing about it. After I saw a post about y'all ditching Facebook I thought this sounds like a company with some standards. So I'm checking you out

Timothy NoakesMay 25th, 2019 at 6:50 pm

Thanks CrossFit CEO Greg for helping the re-instatement of the Banting 7 Day Meal Plan Facebook page. Without your support and proactivity it's possible that the 1.65 million members would have lost forever a support platform that they find remarkably helpful. Here's hoping that your actions will lead to all the positive outcomes you desire.

Victoria GoldsteinMay 25th, 2019 at 8:05 pm

I support this decision 100%!! Thank you for not being easily influenced in a society where many seem scared to do what’s right.

Marco LeinerMay 25th, 2019 at 10:19 pm

Wrong dessicion....

Spiro IloMay 25th, 2019 at 11:02 pm

Thank you for your stand with FaceNoteBook. From today I'm yout man and you my sportsstore.

Brandi RinkMay 26th, 2019 at 12:55 am

Greg, jump ship to MeWe!!! It’s actually a free-thinking social media site!! No crappy ads-no spying! They believe in freedom of thought-they are ran by a libertarian. P.S. they dislike Facebook because of their censorship, lack of security, and their textbook reward ratio schedule used driving its social media addiction. I have done several reports on them in college for this very thing. Come to MeWe...they have bacon! 🥓

Miguel GonzalezMay 26th, 2019 at 2:25 am

CrossFit Rave here, so, I understand the reason. Should we remove our social media accounts as well?

Ramona ParmantieMay 26th, 2019 at 2:33 am

Bravo! I’ve never been more proud to call myself a CrossFitter. Thank you for standing up for what’s right!

John UhrigMay 26th, 2019 at 3:24 am

Outstanding Leadership De Oppresso Liber

Dick MeyerMay 26th, 2019 at 3:28 am

Thank you for taking the stand to face up to Facebook! I hope your business expands because of this stance. Good words. Good reasoning.

Jimmi SherpaMay 26th, 2019 at 11:58 am

Hats off man....you have just earned one more subscriber from Nepal. A huge thank you for standing your ground and not giving up to the pressure of this corporate shit who wants us all on junk food. They are really evil and only cares about $$$. Thank you once again.

Craig RMay 26th, 2019 at 12:30 pm

I was unfamiliar with the details of who you are and what you do (other than occasionally seeing groups of people come dashing out of one of your gyms and running around the parking lot of the strip mall they share with the restaurant I was at) until I read this article. Having taken up a LCHF lifestyle about 9 months ago, I'm sold on its benefits. I didn't realize that was part of what you do. Point being, as a result of you withdrawing from Facebook and writing about it here, I'll be looking into who you are with more interest.

Jim DavidsonMay 26th, 2019 at 7:54 pm

Kudos to you for standing firm and rejecting Facebook. I too have shunned Facebook. They are banned from all of my browsers and devices thanks to the help of Ad blockers which can eliminate the trace of unwanted web sites. A regime to maintain one's good physical health must include a regime which maintain one's good mental health. Rejecting Facebook should be part of any such regime.

Victor RamosMay 27th, 2019 at 5:09 pm

I just now joined CROSSFIT because you have the courage of your convictions to stand up for free speech. I'm on a 3o day forced Vacay from fb for such heretical statements as, 'Build the damn wall already and keep illegals out.' Even worse: I'm a Capitalist who builds guitars! You keep doing what you're doing and I'll start buying your product. Yours, Victor Ramos y Bonavita

Ethane FenerMay 27th, 2019 at 7:28 pm

Announce one or more alternatives and we’ll be there, in droves.

Clint MichaelMay 28th, 2019 at 12:28 am

Facebook also helps ruin marriages and it gives idiots a false sense of celebrity status.

Ruoall ChapmanMay 28th, 2019 at 7:56 am

Preach!! Hate that platform.

Ruoall ChapmanMay 28th, 2019 at 7:56 am

Beautiful!!! Love it! Love it! Love it! Facebook is the Devil... or no, the ones in charge are. I support your decision all the way!!

Michael KwiatkowskiMay 30th, 2019 at 1:00 pm

Relatively new to the CF community and could not be happier or agree more with this move, great job!

Eli SterinMay 30th, 2019 at 6:04 pm

This is both good and important

PABLO DE SOUZAJune 2nd, 2019 at 12:18 am

Is a Good Thinking way, but we need a media too. We have a other choices, like my own site and etc. for one side is a right way, but in the other side, we kill the Media for new affiliates. But Greg, i really understod and i aprove. Let's do one World with more Health.

Chris HilesJuly 7th, 2019 at 3:40 pm

I don't think a lot of people realise the enormous significance of this. Whilst there are many supportive comments here, there are a few dissenting ones who are simply uninformed as to what FB really is. This is a bold and incredibly authentic move and Greg Glassman should be lauded for taking it. I have personally experienced many pages, groups, individuals etc being suspended, banned and removed completely from FB, simply for stating an opinion. This is no doubt political, and we affiliate owners and other CrossFitters, could also denounce this and take away our own pages, but that would only harm our own businesses. People like Greg Glassman are in a position of relative influence and have the opportunity to make a stand for what is clearly right. Any action he takes is almost immediately transmitted to hundreds of thousands of people, and carries a weight that we can only dream of. This is about free speech and the absurd idea that FB has transparent, clear and precise rules and regulations (it absolutely doesn't!) as to what is allowed and what is not. Algorithms may pick up suspect posts, but ultimately it relies on an opinion of an individual as to what constitutes "hate speech" or other such ridiculous notions. As an affiliate owner, I am very proud to be a part of the CrossFit community and my pride has only been bolstered by this action.
