ATHLETE'S COURSE

The CFD Athlete's Course is a one-day course designed for the CrossFitter who is looking to increase his or her awareness and personal-defense skills.

CrossFitters train for the unknown and unknowable, but elite fitness does not guarantee personal safety. If CrossFit is the study of human movement, CrossFit Defense is the study of human movement as it relates to violence, fear and aggression. Athletes are taught close quarter skills and combines fun, dynamic, and effective drills that are extremely effective for anyone of any age who may have to defend themselves.

Coach Tony Blauer created a physiologic and instinct-based system that is the seamless interface between the high-intensity CrossFit protocol and the human in-grained self-defense system. Coach Blauer's S.P.E.A.R. System is the only personal-defense system in the world based on the bodys physiological response to danger what the body wants to do prior to any training. This makes the S.P.E.A.R. System easy to learn.

CrossFit Defense combines the tenacity of the CrossFit athlete with the specific motor skills needed for personal defense. This results in a course designed to improve CrossFit performance, as well as teach participants the essential tools for surviving a violent ambush. Participants will leave with skills to put into practice immediately.

The CFD Athlete's Course teaches participants to:

  • Detect and avoid danger by improving awareness and make practical tactical choices regarding personal safety.
  • Defuse and de-escalate common conflicts and position oneself for a morally and legally tactical position.
  • Use physiology-based skills and drills for self-protection.
  • Understand the relationship of the extensor muscles and core stabilization as it pertains to personal defense.
  • Learn fundamental S.P.E.A.R. System drills and tactics.
  • Apply core-to-extremity principles for personal defense.
  • Use CrossFit movements that mirror simple and effective combative movements.
  • Learn how to use and incorporate common CrossFit equipment to develop combative skills.
  • Add variety to ones CrossFit workouts.
  • Identify and manage fear.
COST: $249

TRAINER'S COURSE

The CFD Trainer's Course is a two-day, intensive program designed for an L1 Trainer who wants offer a practical, contemporary and relevant personal defense solution for their clientele or affiliate without deviating from CrossFit methodology.<

This course focuses on the S.P.E.A.R. Systems drills and skills required to develop mental, physical and tactical strength and endurance, as well as how to teach these skills to clients or at an affiliate. The CFD Trainers Course adds diversity to ones programming and more importantly, enhances the safety of ones athletes.

The S.P.E.A.R. System is an empirically researched personal defense method. It is based on the unparalleled speed of the startle-flinch response, combined with the bodys strongest biomechanical position of the arms in order to create a barrier between a defender and an opponent. This position, known as Outside 90, serves as a bridge for the next tactic. Attendees also learn the psychology and fear management skills that underpin the S.P.E.A.R. System.

The CFD program is based on sound kinematics and makes use of many CrossFit movements that mimic combative movement. This makes the program simple and effective without getting sidetracked with rituals commonly found in martial arts.

On completion, participants will be able to create training programs that combine the CrossFit philosophy of using functional movement that is both elemental & fundamental to survival with CFD movements for warm-ups, cool-downs, and specialty sessions. Sample lesson plans and workouts and seminar content are made available to participants.

Course graduates learn and receive:

  • Pre-load videos of the essential drills and skills that participants need to demonstrate to successfully graduate the course. These are reviewed in detail, but it is essential for participants to review them prior to the 2-day course.
  • Intense review of the fundamental skills via drilling, teach-backs, testing and demonstrating.
  • Multiple combative and defensive drills for single and multiple opponent scenarios.
  • Ideas on how to design defensive and combative workouts.
  • Detailed information on equipment use and safety.
  • CFD warm-ups, cool-downs, sample lesson plans to use in weekly or mini specialty sessions at an affiliate (received upon completion).
  • Access to a private forum for discussion and online interaction amongst other CFD coaches to benefit from lessons-learned and best-practices.
COST: $595

FAQ
Q: Are there any pre-requisites for this course?
A: The two-day course is open to any CrossFit athlete. L1 Trainers will receive a CrossFit Defense Trainer certificate. Non L1s will receive a 'participation' certificate. No prior martial art training is necessary to complete this course. Attendance at the CFD Athletes Course is valuable, but not a pre-requisite.

Q: Is there any sparring or fighting involved in this course?
A: No. There are two high-intensity WODs per day that test the participants understanding of the movements and reactions as a defender and as a role-player attacker.

Q: Is there a written test?
A: Yes.

Q: What should I bring to the course?
A: Bring a notebook or laptop. Wear athletic clothing. Be sure to review all the pre-load videos. CONTACT

Jeff R. Tucker, or "Tucker" to those who know him, is the CEO and founder of Global Sports Xtreme (GSX CrossFit) in Fort Worth, Texas, and he has a passion for teaching gymnastics, tumbling and gymnastics strength theory.

At the CrossFit Gymnastics Trainer Course, Coach Tucker or one of his Tier One coaches will delve into basic, intermediate and advanced gymnastics forms in a lecture setting followed by practical application. Skills will be repeated until the student has a full grasp and understanding of how to learn, spot and teach instructed methods safely. Instruction will include how to scale and spot all demonstrated movements for beginners and accomplished athletes.

This is a 2-day interactive course with Q-and-A-style lecture and video presentations, where you and coaches will perform all movements. You will learn how to combine applied forms with gymnastics applications toward basic and advanced static forms. You will develop confidence in the forms and learn to push such fundamentals for personal achievement, as well as how to program such moves for the CrossFit methodology and WODs within CrossFit boxes. Repeated progressions performed by each student will allow you to gain body-weight control and begin your path in gymnastics movement.

Our goal in this course is to aid CrossFitters in using gymnastics for strength development, core control, spatial awareness and WOD progressions. The desired result is that the CrossFit community will become more engaged in using one of the foundational blocks for CrossFit workouts: gymnastics. Handouts and other material will be e-mailed to you prior to the course date.

You will be taught a wide variety of foundational movements and techniques, including these and others:

  • Basic strength: development for disadvantaged leverage and basic strength prowess for gymnastics movement.
  • Parallette work: handstands, L-sits, stretching, core control, handstand push-ups, scalability of basic and intermediate movements, spotting, range-of-motion/extreme range of motion training.
  • Rings: core-training exercises, support work, proper hand placement, L-sits, iron-cross progressions, dislocates, presses, muscle-ups and muscle-up drills, self-spotting techniques, kips, handstands, and conditioning.
  • Bar variations: handstands, back levers, skin the cats, L-sit pull-up variations, stretching, kipping swings, spotting techniques, bar muscle-ups, scalability of all movements.
  • Handstands: handstand push-ups, handstand forward rolls, balance work, presses to handstands, L-sits to handstands. You will be taught how to spot and scale these foundational elements for WODs and newbies, and you will learn hand placement, core control, strength development, planches (progressions on floor, rings and paralettes).

You only need to bring athletic attire and an adventurous attitude! We look forward to teaching all comers of all skill levels how these foundational gymnastic elements will increase your strength, flexibility and understanding of how gymnastics programming is part of Greg Glassman's vision.

CrossFit Gymnastics Advanced Trainer Course

This is an extension of the CrossFit Gymnastics Trainer Course that bridges the gap from training to sport. It is grounded in prerequisite strength, safe coaching and technique to produce powerful movement and efficiency in skill work. Attendees are given a global understanding of human movement based in the advanced application of gymnastics training, not only in other areas of CrossFit training but also in human movement in sport and in life.

The GSX facility (located in Fort Worth, Texas) features a wide array of equipment and the required safety nets for training the advanced movements requested by the CrossFit community: in-ground trampolines, overhead suspension gear, ring trainers, matting, ropes, spring floors, rod floors, a tumbling pit, an air track, and indoor and outdoor CrossFit training facilities. The now-legendary Hell's Half Acre will allow for both indoor and outdoor CrossFit activities.

Staff will include USGA coaches, acrobatic specialists and award-winning gymnastic coaches who have competed within the NCAA/USA/British National Teams in the sport of gymnastics. The coaching ratio will be 5:1, giving athletes a chance for a great deal of personal instruction.

This course has been custom developed to allow you to learn the following:

  • Acrobatic skills: spatial awareness, body control with dynamic movements.
  • Strap work: this is a silk style acrobatic work.
  • Balance work: planche, hand balancing, stunting, walking on hands.
  • Mushroom work: bucket work and mushroom progressions.
  • Tumbling: basic forward rolls to front flips, back flips, back handsprings.

Whether you are a novice or accomplished CrossFit athlete, our coaching staff will teach you the necessary skills and drills for applying gymnastics elements to your own workouts and personal goals, but you will also walk away with the knowledge needed to be a better coach. Lectures will cover our current curriculum, with practical sessions as a complement.

All the GSX coaches and head coach Jeff Tucker himself wish to offer you a true Texas welcome as they host a complimentary Saturday-night cowboy brisket and barbecue with all the fixin's!

#8: Are there any pre-requisites for this course?

No. Anyone can attend; however, to receive a Trainer Certificate for the Kettlebell Gymnastics Trainer Course one must hold a valid and current Level 1 Trainer Certificate. If you attend and do not hold a valid and current Level 1 Trainer Certificate, you will be issued a Certificate of Attendance.

#9: What are the course requirements?
The requirements for this course are stringent, primarily for your protection and the safety of those you train. They are:
  • Holding a valid and current CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certificate
  • Course Attendance 100%
  • Participation 100%
  • Pass all skills on Performance Test
    • Due to the importance of the material presented in this course, there will be no exceptions to the above criteria.
    • If, for any reason, you do not fulfill all the above requirements, you will be permitted to attend another course of the same level for completion at half price. All required criteria must be met before Trainer Certificates are issued. Otherwise a certificate of attendance will be issued.
Note: If you are NOT planning on teaching others, you may choose to forego testing and the Level 1 requirement. You will be issued a Certificate of Attendance, instead of a Trainer Certificate.
#10: What happens if I fail the performance test?
The student is graded on a pass/fail basis on their ability to correctly perform the physical techniques. The demonstrated techniques are done at the appropriate speed and amount of weight with the emphasis on precise form. This evaluation is conducted on the last day of the course. Students will test one at a time or as a group and will perform the exercises called out by the instructor.
If a student fails to perform an exercise to standard, the instructor will note it and continue the evaluation. At the end of the evaluation, the student will be informed on which exercise(s) failed to meet the standard. If time allows, the instructor may offer remedial training, and the student may receive the opportunity to retest. The retest consists of only the exercises that were identified, not the entire list of exercises. If the student corrects the technical deficiencies, then he will receive a passing score. If he fails the retest, he will not receive an Instructor Certificate.

#11: What happens if I fail to meet the standard during the retest?
You will be required to submit a videotape of yourself correctly demonstrating the identified techniques within two months after the date of your Course. Upon review of the video, the Chief Instructors will either issue your Instructor Course certificate or suggest that you to retake the course.

#12: When will I receive my certificate?
You will receive your certificate at the completion of the seminar.

CrossFit offers a Kids Trainer Course for those interested in the specifics of teaching CrossFit to children and adolescents. The purpose of this course is to learn child-specific cues for foundational CrossFit movements, scaling, progressions and drills. Other topics covered in the course include: neurological development as it relates to exercise, weightlifting, health and safety, programming, teaching styles, class structure, and kids games. Throughout the course, participants learn how to pair fitness with fun: an essential objective to promote a lifetime of fitness.

Participants learn techniques and methods to overcome the unique challenges of teaching kids the CrossFit methodology, how a CrossFit Kids program can help build one's affiliate, and see how CrossFit Kids is changing the lives of children and teens around the world for the better.

Affiliates, teachers, coaches, parents, home schooling families and others benefit from learning this unique, kid-friendly approach to teaching the CrossFit method. There is no CrossFit Kids test requirement at this time. However, to receive a Kids Trainer Certificate, full participation in the entire course is mandatory.

FAQ

1. 1. May I register for the Kids Trainer course if I have not attended a Level One course or do not yet have a Level 1 Certificate?

You need to have attended or be registered to attend a Level One Course to be able to attend a Kids Course. If you have attended a Level One Course and not yet passed the test you will receive a Kids Certificate of Attendance and you will not have the privileges associated with a Kids Trainer Certificate. You must email certificates@crossfit.com for a Kids Trainer Certificate once you pass the Level One test and the Level 1 Certificate has been awarded.

2. What does a Kids Certificate of Attendance allow me to do?

The Certificate of Attendance simply documents that the individual attended the Kids Trainer Course. It does not afford listing in the CrossFit Trainer Directory nor any of the privileges of a CrossFit Kids Trainer Certificate.

3. What are the requirements to get a Kids Trainer Certificate?

A Level 1 Trainer Certificate and 100% participation in the CrossFit Kids Course.

4. What if I have a condition affecting my athletic capacity (e.g., medical condition, injured, pregnant)? Do I still have to participate in the workouts?

Yes, participation is required from anyone. Our instructors can scale the workout appropriately to any level.

5. What does a Kids Trainer Certificate allow me to do?

The Kids Trainer Certificate allows one to use the "CrossFit Kids Trainer" designation on their bio, resume, or website. For example,
Jon Smith, CrossFit Kids Trainer

It also allows a trainer to teach CrossFit Kids methods to children. It is valid only with a valid Level 1 Certificate. To market "CrossFit Kids" classes or a "CrossFit Kids" program, one must hold a CrossFit Kids Trainer Certificate and work at an existing, registered CrossFit Kids program. For more information on registered CrossFit Kids programs, contact info@crossfitkids.com.

6. What are the pre-requisites for having a registered CrossFit Kids program?
There are four prerequisites:

  • Have insurance that covers the sexual abuse and molestation of children (SAM) clause.
  • Be or become a CrossFit affiliate (or be employed at an existing CrossFit affiliate). The trainer leading or teaching CrossFit Kids must possess a current Level 1 Certificate and complete the CrossFit Kids Trainer Course.
  • Acquire the CrossFit Kids icon, linking the affiliate webpage to the CrossFit Kids website (via info@crossfitkids.com)
7. What does being a registered Kids program allow me to do?

Market "CrossFit Kids" classes or program.

The CrossFit Movement and Mobility trainer course is a hands on, movement theory based workshop where coaches and athletes will be exposed to the principles of Kelly Starrett's Movement and Mobility Method of resolving pain, preventing injury, and optimizing athletic performance.

Performance is what drives the human animal, but the human animal can be brought to an abrupt halt by dysfunctional movement patters and underlying restrictions in mobility. Oftentimes, the factors that impede performance are invisible to not only the untrained eye, but also the majority of athletes and coaches. This course exposes attendees to a Starrett's systematic approach to make the invisible visible. This course illuminates common movement errors that can cause injury and rob you of speed, power, endurance, and strength. Whether you are a professional athlete, a weekend warrior, or simply someone wanting to live healthy and free from restrictions, this course will teach you how to maintain your body and harness your genetic potential.

Learn How To:

  • Prevent and rehabilitate common athletic injuries
  • Overhaul your movement habits and efficiently your body's most effective physiology
  • Quickly identify, diagnose, and fix inefficient movement patterns
  • Problem solve for pain and dysfunction
  • Fix poor mechanics that rob power, bleed force, and dump torque
  • Unlock reservoirs of athletic capacity you didn't know you had
  • Identify and fix poor movement patterns in children
  • Develop strategies that restore function to your joints and tissues
  • Develop effective individual and group mobility programming

The CrossFit Movement & Mobility Course is presented by one of the CrossFit Movement and Mobility Seminar Staff including Dr. Kelly Starrett; Jami Tikkanen, Osteopath; Dr. Roop Sihota; Dr. Theresa Larson, Dr. Travis Jewett, DC; or Dr. Danny Matta.

There are two CrossFit Weightlifting Courses:

  1. Weightlifting Trainer Course: Spend two full days with CrossFit Weightlifting Seminar Staff learning, studying and practicing the two basic lifts. The snatch and clean and jerk bring speed, power, coordination, agility, accuracy and balance to your strength training. These lifts are indispensable to CrossFit programming, and expert coaching is a powerful advantage.
  2. Weightlifting Advanced Trainer Course: This builds on the introductory course by developing your knowledge of the lifts and ability to coach others in them. All methods presented will assist the coach in finding the optimal way to coach and motivate individual athletes to perform the lifts safely, efficiently and effectively.

Fighters are some of the most well-conditioned and powerful athletes in the world. This is due, in part, to their striking training since punching and kicking with true power, speed and accuracy requires people to utilize their entire body from the ground up. As a consequence, striking is one of the most rudimentary and functional movements that involve the core.

Developed by Martial Arts Masters Hall-of-Fame inductee and SWAT team member, George Ryan, CrossFit Striking is designed to take both the skills and the benefits from a fighter's striking training program and integrate them into CrossFit workouts. It is a program that is grounded in success since it has grown out of George's system of striking and self-protection that he has been teaching to tactical operators and law enforcement personnel around the country for over twelve years.

After becoming CrossFit Level 1 and Kettlebell Level 1 Certified, George saw that adding striking techniques to CrossFit workouts is a natural fit - not only for tactical operators and law enforcement personnel training in CrossFit, but for all athletes as well. This is because striking workouts can provide all athletes with four major benefits:

  1. You can achieve a fighter's fitness level
  2. You can increase your core strength, rotational speed and power
  3. You can develop a sport specific movement and
  4. You can learn a real self-protection skill-set.
These benefits can make striking a valuable addition to every person's CrossFit program.

With this in mind, the CrossFit Striking Trainer Course is designed to give participants the essential skills that will allow them to instruct athletes in the basic striking concepts of mixed martial arts, boxing and self-protection. Participants will be taught how to incorporate striking drills into CrossFit workouts so that overall fitness, core strength, rotational speed and power can be increased. In addition, the CrossFit Striking Trainer Course will teach participants to:

  • Achieve a fighter's fitness level
  • Add variety to CrossFit workouts
  • Be able to throw proper strikes and combinations, i.e. punch & kick
  • Understand the role of the kinetic chain and the posterior chain that support athletic performance and fighting
  • Increase the speed and power of strikes, regardless of experience
  • Be able to teach proper striking mechanics to clients
  • Safely run a training session involving striking skills and drills
  • Teach an essential self-protection skill-set to athletes
  • Effectively use shadow boxing, focus mitts and a heavy bag

Strongman

strongman.jpg

CrossFit Strongman is the integration of strongman movements and energy systems into the constantly varied CrossFit model. Think of it as "old-school movements with new-school programming."

The typical strongman competition consists of five events in one day. Each event is less than 60 seconds, so athletes never tap into anything but the ATP/CP system. Consider what would happen if you trained yourself to have that kind of output during a longer workout like, for example, a seven-minute AMRAP of farmer's carries mixed with gymnastics. This is a perfect expression of old movements implemented with new programming, and the results are staggering.

We believe CrossFit Strongman is the best - and most fun - way to increase strength while still increasing work capacity across broad time and modal domains. In CrossFit, we want a stimulus that is constantly varied so we never stop progressing in our fitness. Strongman movements provide plenty of variation in a toy-filled playground where athletes can test and improve their brute strength and overall fitness level.

Because of the often-awkward size, shape and consistency of the objects we use in strongman, the lifts tend to have less efficiency than those done with a barbell. Case in point: a water-filled keg. This represents a dynamic load that challenges the neuromuscular system in a way a barbell can't. For this reason, as athletes, we need to develop efficient movement patterns with inefficient loads. That response is at the heart of being a great athlete, and it also applies to the real world, where few objects have handles and perfect balance.

In this one-day seminar, athletes are presented with a constantly changing field of play, and a better athlete will learn to make quicker adjustments and respond more favorably to an unfavorable stimuli.

Why CrossFitters Should Do CrossFit Strongman
  • CrossFit Strongman increases real-world strength, because in daily life we are required to move odd objects such as a grocery bag or a child as efficiently as possible. Barbells exist only in a gym setting.
  • These movements are great for posterior-chain development, a necessity for someone striving to become a good CrossFitter.
  • CrossFit Strongman programming provides CrossFitters with a variety of different stimuli, all aimed at achieving an increase in work capacity - which translates to an increase in your CrossFit ability.
  • CrossFit Strongman, like CrossFit itself, simultaneously integrates metabolic conditioning and strength training.
  • CrossFit movements are designed to move "large loads long distances quickly." Those words are drilled into the mind of anyone who's ever attended a Level 1 Trainer Course. There is no better expression of that key CrossFit principle than moving a yoke that is three times your body weight across a football field in 30 seconds. How about carrying 1.25 times body weight in each hand the same distance in less than 30 seconds or flipping a 700-lb. tire for max reps in 60 seconds? They all equate to large loads moved long distances very quickly.
Scalable? Infinitely.

One of the misconceptions about strongman is that you have to look like a behemoth to take part in the action. Nothing could be further from the truth. At the CrossFit Strongman Seminar, we will illustrate just how scalable these movements are and how quickly they can be adopted into almost any program. These movements are open to people of all abilities, genders and strength levels.

Goals
  • To teach you safe, proper and efficient movement using these objects.
  • To teach you how to coach these movements.
  • To introduce you to the CrossFit Strongman training methodology and programming.
