CrossFit offers two levels of training qualifications:
The Level 1 Certificate Course, and
Coach's Prep Course.
Level 1 Certificate Course: Fundamentals of CrossFit
The Level 1 Certificate Course is an introduction to CrossFit's methodology and foundational movements. The course includes classroom instruction on these topics, as well as hands on small group training for the movements.
These small group sessions are conducted under low intensity with a focus on improving mechanics. Students have their movement observed and corrected, and engage in dialogue concerning effective coaching techniques.
Large, group CrossFit workouts are conducted as an example of bridging the gap from theory to practice. These workouts provide examples of how to:
conduct a class,
hold a standard of effective technique under high intensity,
achieve relative high intensity for each individual, and
scale for any ability level.
The Level 1 is an introductory level education on the fundamental principles and movements of CrossFit. It is structured to meet two goals:
Provide attendees the knowledge to better use CrossFit methods for themselves; and
Provide attendees an initial and foundational education to begin training others using CrossFit.
On completing a Level 1, students have the resources and foundation from which to continue development as a CrossFit trainer and/or athlete. This course has a 55-question multiple-choice test, which is required to pass in order to attain the distinction of CrossFit Level 1 Trainer (CF-L1). All of the questions on the test come directly from the course and the UPDATED CrossFit Training Guide. Students who do not pass the test receive a Level 1 Certificate of Attendance (and cannot use the distinction of CF-L1). CF-L1 trainers may be verified in the CrossFit Trainer Directory.
Level 1 Courses may be repeated as needed or desired. There are no prerequisites; however, CrossFit highly recommends some exposure to CrossFit's workouts and movements before attending. For further Information on the Level 1 Course and Test please see the CrossFit Level 1 Participant Handbook.
Coach's Prep Course: Developing Virtuosity in Coaching
The Coach's Prep Course is an intermediate level seminar, building on the concepts and movements introduced at the Level 1 Certificate Course. This course is ideally suited for all CrossFit trainers, emerging Affiliates, and anyone serious about delivering quality coaching. Students enhance their understanding of the CrossFit methodology, program design & implementation, and advance their skills while coaching others in movements and workouts. Students need to come prepared to be heavily engaged; each leads individual and small group training sessions, and classroom sessions are discussion based. Peers and instructors provide feedback and evaluation.
The goal of the course is for students to leave with a better understanding of:
Essential mechanics of functional movement.
Fault identification & correction ("seeing and correcting"): Where and when to observe movement static and dynamic faults, how to prioritize faults, and how to make real change in movement.
Essentials of an Effective Trainer.
Effective programming via design and evaluation.
Class management strategies for effective group workouts.
Prerequisites:
CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certificate (CF-L1).
Strongly Recommended: at least six months of experience training individuals and groups using CrossFit methods.
In conjunction with having received a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certificate (CF-L1), and on successful completion of the Coach's Prep Course students receive a CrossFit Coach's Prep Course Certificate, and may be verified in the CrossFit Trainer Directory.
