The CrossFit Sports and Health Sciences Institute
The CrossFit Sports and Health Sciences Institute emerged out of the need for a comprehensive response to the global devastation of chronic disease, which accounts for 60 percent of deaths worldwide. The global health, nutrition, and medical communities have failed to address this crisis.
Scientific corruption and the undue influence of industry have resulted in government policies and cultural norms that directly contribute to—rather than reduce—the toll of chronic disease on public health. The CDC predicts the United States alone will have up to 100 million diabetics in its population by 2050.
Scientific evidence, however, concludes that lifestyle choices—diet and exercise—are the greatest factors in the prevention of chronic disease. The CrossFit methodology (constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement) and its dietary prescription (meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar) are unique in their ability to fight chronic disease, making CrossFit’s 13,000 affiliates effective anti-chronic disease centers.
The CrossFit Sports and Health Sciences Institute supports the work of CrossFit, Inc. and the thousands of CrossFit affiliates fighting chronic disease at the individual box level across the world.
The CrossFit Sports and Health Sciences Institute fulfills its mission by:
- Funding and publicizing accurate health science free from the commercial influence of the big food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries
- Supporting education, advocacy, and policy interventions in the service of public health
- Promoting solutions to the global threat of chronic disease through the CrossFit Physicians Alliance, an association of medical doctors dedicated to countering chronic disease through preventative, non-medical health interventions
What We Do
In response to well-documented and widespread corruption within the current academic and scientific communities, the CrossFit Sports and Health Sciences Institute supports truthful and independent inquiry free from corporate, industry, and commercial influence in the fields of sports and health science. The Institute supports conferences (such as the 2015 CrossFit Conference on Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia and our upcoming Diet and Cardiometabolic Health - Beyond Calories conference in July 2017), panels, research, and publications on topics across the broad spectrum of public health, including hydration, diet, exercise science and chronic disease.
The corruption of the sports, health, and nutrition sciences by industry groups has negatively affected public policy and contributed to a global health crisis. The Institute is dedicated to combating deadly misinformation regarding exercise, diet, and lifestyle choices through public education and advocacy campaigns.
The CrossFit Sports and Health Sciences Institute is committed to the practice of non-medical healthcare as a response to chronic disease, based on the scientific evidence that lifestyle choices (diet and exercise) are the greatest contributors to the wellness or sickness of individuals and communities.
Beginning in 2017, the Institute will house the CrossFit Physicians Alliance, an association of medical doctors dedicated to countering chronic disease through preventative, non-medical health interventions. The CrossFit Physicians Alliance will serve as an advisory board to the Institute, issue consensus statements and articulate the Institute’s positions within the broader medical universe (hospitals, medical universities, etc.), and also provide a healthcare referral network for the CrossFit community.
Current Research, Education, and Advocacy Priorities
Current projects of the CrossFit Sports and Health Sciences Institute include an academic conference on nutrition and the energy balance theory, scheduled for summer 2017; ongoing watchdog research on industry’s corruption of the health sciences; advocating for clear conflict of interest policies at governmental and quasi-governmental bodies such as the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health; and pursuing the “Crush Big Soda” campaign through public outreach and education on soda warning labels and taxes.
