Terence Kealey, M.D. Ph.D., and unrivaled breakfast expert, touches on key moments in the history of the day’s morning meal. Kealey’s breakfast insights are drawn from examples ranging from the ancient Greeks and Romans to European feudalism and modern industry-driven practices. Kealey suggests a lack of morning hunger may be the body’s natural defense against eating when it is most insulin and glucose resistant. He also argues dietary recommendations for diabetic patients are “weird” and even dangerous.

“Lipitor, the cholesterol-lowering medication that has become the gold standard of statins, continues to generate roughly $2 billion per year in sales for Pfizer, even though its patent expired eight years ago. Almost all of Pfizer's Lipitor sales now come from China and other emerging markets. But Lipitor's ability to remain a blockbuster drug, even with so many generic competitors that cost pennies per pill, shows how distorted the global pharmaceutical system can be.”

Listen to Liebesträume, by Franz Liszt.

Dr. Aseem Malhotra is a best-selling author, researcher, and one of the most well-known cardiologists in the U.K. His views on cholesterol and sugar, controversial primarily among those who choose to promote special interests at the expense of public health, have landed him in numerous front-page news articles and on primetime television shows. Here, Malhotra discusses his experiences moving from clinical practice into the public eye and shares the lessons he has learned about public health advocacy along the way.

Dominic D’Agostino’s entry into the field of cancer biology involved two separate unexpected observations that were compelling enough to change the trajectory of his research: 1. Under high levels of pressurized oxygen, glioblastoma astrocytes die at a greater rate than normal cells. 2. In low-glucose, high-ketone environments, healthy neurons thrive but glioblastoma astrocytes die. In this article, D’Agostino and co-author Kristi Storoschuk explain what, based on our knowledge of cancer cell biology, was behind these observations. They also discuss the outcomes of their later research, which found nutritional ketosis, ketone supplementation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy effectively slow the progression of cancer without the toxicity to patients that is so common in most other cancer therapies.

“[Dr. Patrick] Hwu, a tumor immunologist, has been following the ketogenic diet himself for six years, long before it was trending on social media. As a leading cancer doctor, he has many patients asking him for the ideal diet while they go through treatment and he often suggests keto. … [Hwu notes] that keto makes sense because his patients are not hungry on it, it manages their weight and blood sugar levels and keeps insulin and IGF-1 levels low — two proteins that have been shown to drive some cancers. ‘I feel that fat intake has been overly emphasized as a negative factor and that a high intake of carbs and the subsequent spikes in insulin and IGF-1 (an insulin-like hormone in the blood) that they cause are more harmful to health overall.’”

In the first article in his new series on diabetes, Dr. Malcolm Kendrick discusses the long history of diabetes research and introduces several models for understanding the causes of the disease, as well as its progression. While the mechanism underlying Type 1 diabetes is generally agreed upon, debate continues over whether Type 2 is related to fat consumption or raised insulin levels resulting from carbohydrate intake. Kendrick explains and evaluates the arguments for each model.

This June 2019 article (published in French) covers the first CrossFit high school sports program in France. The program, located in the Jamot-Jaurès school district, fills the gymnasium twice a week with students from the vocational and general secondary schools. Teacher Jérémy Lascoux remarks, “Ces jeunes ne se rendent pas compte du potentiel physique et mental qu’ils ont. Avec le CrossFit, ils apprennent à se dépasser” — "These young people are not aware of the physical and mental potential they have. With CrossFit, they learn to surpass themselves.”

Several studies support the hypothesis that diet, particularly carbohydrate consumption, affects vision. One study compares the eyesight of hunter-gatherer and industrialized groups and finds myopia skyrockets when indigenous populations adopt a Western diet involving more refined carbohydrates. Another study explores the mechanism behind dietary contribution to myopia and finds increases in insulin promote eyeball elongation in animal models. A third study explores dietary sugar’s links to glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. Its authors ultimately recommend avoiding high glycemic index foods.
