Canada's Decision to Make Public More Clinical Trial Data Puts Pressure on FDA

1

"Last March, Canada's department of health changed the way it handles the huge amount of data that companies submit when seeking approval for a new drug, biological treatment, or medical device — or a new use for an existing one. For the first time, Health Canada is making large chunks of this information publicly available after it approves or rejects applications. … Researchers who independently re-evaluate drugs say the reports are critical because the data they need is not readily available in medical journal articles. One analysis showed that only about half of clinical trials examined were written up in journals in a timely fashion and a third went unpublished. And when articles are published, they contain much less data than the reports. ... In addition, ‘journal articles emphasize benefits and underplay or, in some cases, even ignore harms’ that can be found in the clinical study report data.”

All hspu in sets of 3 except for the last 6 of the 21 In sets of 2, deadlifts broken 8-7-6/6-5-4/5-4

Hspus felt much better this time. Deadlift loads felt easy too. Just took breaks to keep my HR down a bit.

As rx’d, 120. Got through 21 deadlifts @ 315# and 45-ft. HS walk.

Not a PR. Last time, was able to finish the first 50-ft. HS walk and then 6 more reps at 315. Difference today was my deadlift – just not as strong as back in 2018. Disappointing, b/c I had a good strategy – break the deads more (7-7-7 / 5-5-5 / 5-4) and the HSPU less (15-6 / 10-5 / 6-3). 315 felt super heavy – broke it 5-4-3-3-3-3, but had to rest so much between triples. Thought about doing singles, but the first rep of each triple was the hardest. After the 21 deads, I had about a minute left for the HS walk. Did that in 10’ segments across the gym floor, and did not quite finish the fifth segment.

But I am going to do it again on Monday! My timer on my phone went off & I stopped to turn it back on. I’m going to use my wall timer & position the bars closer for that weight transfer! I can’t believe Dan Bailey did Diane sub 2:00 min. 😮

Scaled option, with 9' time cap

3:50 scaled Diane (64kg deadlifts, hand-release push-ups)

21 deadlifts at 88kg, 50 feet bear crawl, 5 deadlifts - 2 reps shorter than last time, I might redo it.

Used my kettlebells and a shovel shaft, so a thick 'bar' for the deadlifts :-)

Went for the 5K run after this result there.

Globo scale: if you are in the Open, you will likely need to do this one at an affiliate or somewhere with 30 feet of flat open space. Also you need to have those measurements. Best bet is to go to map.crossfit.com to find an affiliate nearest you and sign up to do the workout there. If not, you need to have someone help you for measuring and counting HSPU reps, as well as the aforementioned space. Set up your camera in a way that gets all your action in, including the HS Walk /bear crawl.

If you are not in the Open, you can sub heavy strict dumbbell press for the HSPU, or just do the scaled version. Use 50/35lb dumbbell deadlifts (2/1 in the second round) if in a hotel gym or gym without a barbell (cruise ship), and do the scaled version (hr pushups and bear crawls), push the pace. Also, you can set an arbitrary distance for bear crawls or HS walk if a 25ft distance isn't available or you don't have measuring equipment.

So I did this scaled but kept the deadlift weights the same. I deadlift over 500 and the scales weights were just too light. I got through the "Diane" portion in 5:30. After taking a 15 second rest I hit 3 reps with 315 and hit a wall. I was able to crank out another 5 reps with 315 before the time cap. I really wanted to do this Rx but my shoulder mobility needs work before I do handstand pushups.

I feel like the need for this information to be out there and available is directly in the public interest. The more I read, the more I lose faith in the ethics of the studies and trials, whether its because of big business inserting the money, or some form of misconduct and cutting corners in the research.

There also seems to be this fear of if the information is out there that there will be issues found and it will push back progress that has been made.... That line of thinking is just wrong though, because if the information is bad, you haven't actually moved the field forward, and you are working off of faulty information moving further from the truth. The longer it takes for those errors to come to light, the more chance we have to do harm and prevent any real future progress.

2nd half scale: 225lbs and wall-facing shoulder taps

21:49

I had finished Diane and 10 of the 225-DLs at 9:00. It took me 39 seconds to add another 70lbs to the bar between Diane and the 225s. But then I took like a minute-long break thinking I'm done at 9:00 before I got the courage to get going again. So, minus those big delays, I may have been around 20.5.

INTENDED STIMULUS

.

Repeat! It is open time. Today we celebrate fitness. Today let's find out where we are. Choose the scaling option that will give you the most information about your fitness. If you have done this before, then check your notes for that workout. If the strategy you used back then worked, no need to change it. Your objective today is not to best your score from last time. That is the desired outcome, of course. But focusing focused on that will hinder your performance. Instead, concentrate on a solid deadlift technique and smooth pushing. This workout looks grunty and heavy, it seems like you can muscle it up, but it will reward good movement. Save your shoulders and your back! Trust your training and your self and go out there to give your best. The result will take care of itself. Move well!

OPTION 1

21-15-9 reps of:

OPTION 2

Champions Club Scaling Notes:

RANT

Honestly, Diane is enough. Especially if you ware not doing this as part of the open. See how all that handstand work and L-sits have payed off.

I SHOULD TRY THIS AS RX'D IF: I signed up for the Open, or want to see how I stack up.

FIRST TIME WITH CROSSFIT VERSION: 5 rounds of: 15 deadlifts, 1:00 handstand hold (running clock).

GROUP VERSION: Diane. I am really in favor of subbing handstand holds for hspu during workouts because there's the hold-your-breath and upside-down factor that you don't get with box or pike hspu. Practice those on the side.

INJURY VERSION:

Themes are: rigid midline, benchmark test, upside down, shoulders overhead, shoulders smoked, squatting. Pick two movements in those areas that require a very short transition time and go for 12 minutes.

WARMUP

Squat - deadlift prep

jump rope - always

Pull-up - overhead prep + hanging

Hip extension - deadlift prep

[insert thing you suck at]

*shorter workout means longer warmup

GENERAL FEAR LEVEL: 7. Muscular fatigue plays in here, a very welcome thing compared to the last two open workouts.

Hey Chris, I see you provided an injury option, however I have an injury that won’t allow me to straighten my left arm entirely. I’m just getting back into CrossFit and wanted to know if you knew of any subs for hspu or hs walks since I’m unable to stabilize in that position.
