I find it easy to believe that physical activity in general improves health. But we think that the reason we get fat is because we take in excess calories. We think that if we increase our calorie expenditure and reduce our intake, we will get leaner. And there’s precious little evidence to support that.

"After three years of dedicated calorie-counting [Salvador] Camacho changed tack. While recovering from running the 2010 marathon in San Diego he took up CrossFit training, an exercise regime that includes high-intensity training and weightlifting. There he met people using a very different method to control their weight. Like him, they exercised regularly. But rather than limiting their calories, they ate natural foods, what Camacho calls 'stuff from a real plant, not an industrial plant.'"
