Thursday 140821

Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:
10 burpee pull-overs
30 squats
60 seconds of handstand hold

This is a static handstand hold, not a walk. Only count time while the hands are stationary. If needed, use a wall.

Post rounds completed to comments.

Love it. At 62, I can still do pull-over's. I've had both knees and both shoulders replaced due to arthritis, HOWEVER, this workout gives me a HUGE smile. I KNOW I can kick some young butt on this workout! Thanks!

Comment #8 - Posted by: Skip Chase at August 20, 2014 8:07 PM

No head space for the pullovers. Did back words roll on a bar instead. 4 rounds plus 5 burpee back rolls.

No space to do the pull-overs so used my low rings to do burpess to backwards rolls which were really tough.

3 rounds + all the way through the squats with just enough time to kick up to the Handstand.

Comment #12 - Posted by: NickR at August 21, 2014 2:42 AM

I did regular pull ups im still struggling on those. I did 4 rounds. I hated and loved it at the same time. Keep it coming

3 Rounds + 10 Burpee pull-overs, 30 squats, 30 second handstand hold.

First time ever doing pull-overs. Took some practice, I'm sure they were ugly, but was able to get them - new things; one of the many reasons I love crossfit!!!

modified and scaled all; burpees hurt foot--might have a stress fracture--pain started after 8x400s; started with burpees, step on 12" stool, jump to bar for knees to (or close to) bar; stopped after 5 and went on to squats; for remainder did:

5 push-ups + 5 pull-ups + 5 KTE
30 squats
30sec handstand holds

And limped along like that for 5 rounds even in 20 min.

Comment #28 - Posted by: Espen at August 21, 2014 6:45 AM

3 rounds 5 burpee-pullovers

The burpee-pullovers were not as RX'd, I did not have a bar to swing all the was over, so I tried to get my legs above and hanging over the bar and when I couldn't do that I used neutral grip handles and got legs above the bar. If I had a bar, I might have been able to do three or four correctly.

Comment #29 - Posted by: BW at August 21, 2014 6:46 AM

Did Tuesday's Elizabeth. Results there.

Didn't have a pull up bar that I could go over the top of so I did hips-to-bar. Never did a handstand before either, so I used the wall and did 30sec.
Got 4 rounds + 5sec handstand.
I loved doing this because I can do it at home, so hopefully next time I try it I won't have to scale it at all!

Does someone want to point out the benefits from doing a "pull-over". Seems ridiculous and puts one at risk of falling on their head. Just unnecessary.

5 months ago, after 10 yrs of religious cf in garage gym, my wods started to increase in time. i started missing wods, which i rarely did, unless inundated with emergencies at work. 2 months later, i noted a change in bowel habits. last month, i was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer which had caused anemia due to slow, very mild, but constant blood loss(thus the poor workout times).

yesterday was day 1 of chemo and radiation(of 28 days). elizabeth---6:48, about 2 min off my pr, but at least i finished/got through it.

day two of 28 today, tho skipping the bar-over part of burpees---common side effect of chemo i am on is possible skin sloughing from the palms and the feet, so will be pullup deprived for 10 months.(radiation/chemo, surgery, more chemo)

no, this post is not a wod post, get over it.

As rx'd (handstand holds were supported), 3 rounds + 4 burpee pull-overs.

Not enough headroom to roll over the pull-up bar at the house, so I trekked on over to the park nearby - where I used to do many workouts before we put the home gym in. This was like playtime. Burpee pull-overs were tough at first. I went from getting less than 1 out of every 4 in warm-up, to not missing any until the second round of the WOD. The mental cue that helped me was keeping legs straight and together as long as possible. Took today at about 80%; still recovering from a cold.

Saw a lot of people subbing for burped pull overs because of head room. I too have this problem in my garage, so I tried putting 1 1/2 times my weight on the squat rack at its highest setting and was able to do them fine using that, yes I didn't have to jump up to the bar but everything else was just the same.

Comment #82 - Posted by: Indy Matt at August 21, 2014 5:38 PM

to #31: the burpee pullover tests strength, coordination, accuracy, balance, stamina, and endurance, which would be 6 of the 10 dimensions of fitness. It tests your ability to move your bodyweight through multiple planes and generate torque with your core. I would argue that's pretty awesome. If you have any kinesthetic awareness and are smart enough not to let go of the bar while you're upside down, the danger of falling on your head is minimal to nonexistent. In a real world application, if you were ever being dragged backwards behind the bumper of a semi, if you could get a grip on the bumper, you could do a pull over and get into the trailer and continue on with the mission. You definitely did not see that one coming.

Great workout crossfit. Keep the challenging weird movements coming. When will we see inverted burpees again?

sub'd a pull through my hands on the bottom of the pull-up bar since my gym doesn't have anywhere to go over the pull up bar. I figured its a little easier but same basic concept?.

10 burpee pull through
30 squats
60 handstand hold.

4 rounds
Scaled burpees to 5 and used back bar to get over
Used wall for HS

Comment #105 - Posted by: Cyndee K at August 22, 2014 5:41 AM

4 rounds + 4 burpee pull overs
The burpee pullovers got WAY easier as you went along, not too bad

Comment #106 - Posted by: Danielle Haskett at August 22, 2014 5:46 AM

RX: 3 rds + 30 sec HS hold (used wall).

Agree with comments here: burpee pullovers took longer than expected, but seemed to get easier as I did them more and got into the mechanics of the movement.

I finally figured out the technique for the pullovers by the 3rd round! If you pull and "land" on your belly, instead of you hip area, on the bar, its much easier to get around. Thanks for taking me out of my comfort zone. Here's to constantly varied!

Comment #121 - Posted by: John S. Kacik at August 22, 2014 1:18 PM

I did this again. Rogue IPS bar (instead of fat bar at gym), which I would highly, highly recommend to anyone in need of a pull-up bar.

As RX'd, with free standing HS, 3 rounds plus 10 burpee pull-overs and 30 squats.

Huge improvement this time. Pull-overs are all about getting the movement down. I probably failed thirty times yesterday. No failures today! Free standing handstands are a work in progress.

Comment #122 - Posted by: j5 at August 22, 2014 1:23 PM

@#83 LOL! I love the real life application! I make up ridiculous applications as well, just to mess with the CF haters. In fact I have the others:
Squats: Hovering over public toilets
Handstand holds: If you're standing in line and a wayward chainsaw cuts off your legs, you don't lose your spot in line.

Did this on a playground. Burpee pull-overs to:
Burpee, then pull-over on a low slack line

2 rounds

The low line saved me some work getting my hips up, but dealing with the swing in the rope probably made up for it.

I got some crazy pain in my neck during the first round of pull-overs and had to lie down and groan for awhile (hence only 2 rounds). Not sure what the hell that was all about...

3 rounds: freestanding handstands

On the pullovers I had to do a normal burpee then use a loaded barbell placed high on a squat rack for the pullover.

Handstands were by far the easy part of this for me

Comment #147 - Posted by: Jeff Chalfant 35/192/5'10" at October 3, 2014 6:45 PM

4 rounds on each round only did 3-5 true burpee pull overs, the rest were modified skin the cats just because I would have a hard time getting myself all the way over the bar. Dizzy the whole time. Handstand holds were the toughest part.

Comment #148 - Posted by: clark at October 9, 2014 3:26 AM
