Thanks to Joe, Mike, and Chuck for a great L2 in ATL this weekend. We had a great group of 21 which leaves a lot of time to get in the middle or practice coaching. We all got plenty of stuff to take back to our boxes and use.

Great time in Milan for the L1. After 2 years of regularly training with Crossfit, you guys gave a way better depth and breadth to my understanding and appreciation of CF. Love this community. Thank you so much to the Officine's box and the great coaches. Ciao

Comment #18 - Posted by: Marco A. at August 17, 2014 8:14 PM

@Kammobean

"...have been a dedicated follower for years but as of late I have to say i see why so many take issue with the community."

Rest day articles unrelated to fitness have been going on for almost as long as the site has been operational. It's nothing new.

"...better our minds..."

Not in your case, apparently. Also, irony.

"...not be subjected to personal opinions..."

HQ provided a link to a video made by another entity describing certain current events in Philadelphia. HQ is not providing an opinion; it is hoping that the community provides an opinion. You know, one that actually relates to the video.

"Not all of us are zombies who hang on to your every word and thought..."

Exactly. So what do you feel about the points put forth from the link?

"Just saying..."

Do you happen to be a prosecutor from Philly?

Comment #19 - Posted by: buffedout at August 17, 2014 8:18 PM

@ Kammobean
maybe this will help "better our minds"
maybe I agree or disagree or it leads me to
further research about the subject and then lets me
make up my own mind. I have chugged the CrossFit
Kool-aid and I will be the first to admit it, but because it posts information that challenges me--in my views and opinions, and makes me think about a lot of issues I normally may not think about. Also because it challenges me physically and also mentally. Just my .02 cents

Comment #20 - Posted by: Mike Andridge/44/5'8"/175 at August 17, 2014 8:21 PM

Thank you to everyone who made the Jacksonville Cert happen this weekend. I had an amazing experience and want to thank the seminar staff for their professionalism and infectious passion for proper movement.

After years of just watching CrossFit grow. I used to cherry pick Wods from different sites that played to my strengths, thinking I had all of the proper form and technique down, and not being a member of an Affiliate - All of that has changed. I hit a cross-roads in my life and am now jumping in both feet first. I'm pounding the Kool-aid. I just hit this seminar and will be going to an Endurance Seminar next weekend. I love CrossFit and it has literally saved my life!

Thank you CrossFit HQ, Thank you CrossFit Level I Training Staff, and thank you Kelley @ Niceville Strength and Conditioning!! I am attacking my dreams with High intensity!

Many thanks to Sarah, Leah, Bethanie and Erik for a great L1 experience down in the BIG EASY! It was great to meet and hang with some awesome people. It was a ton of fun even though I feel like we ended up doing about two thousand squats these past two days.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Christian Capella at August 17, 2014 8:59 PM

I would say, as in almost every if not every aspect of human behavior, the incentives for both agents will determine the way the interaction plays out. In the scenario of forfeiture, which in my mind is a clear violation of the fourth amendment but I'm not a constitutional lawyer, the incentives of this psuedo-judiciary proceeding make it such that it is in the best interests of the city government to seize properties.

The article was much more enjoyable for me. I do very much appreciate an individual that objectively analyzed himself identifying the problem, and then took the necessary steps to change his life and move in a direction that brought about happiness and fulfillment. Good for you and keep up the fight. What are we here for if not to be better every day than we were the day before.

“Learning to Breathe Fire: The Rise of CrossFit and the Primal Future of Fitness”
by J.C. Herz

I finished this book over the weekend, and, like a WOD, I had to dig deep to make it through to the end. I really wanted to like it, but it reads like a very dry, poorly edited textbook (it became a game to catch all the missing words and mangled sentence structures). However, the author does a commendable job of interviewing athletes and researching material, all backed with copious footnotes, and provides a chronological view of CF’s rise to popularity.

If you want plain historical facts about CF, or you’re looking for a textbook for next semester’s “CrossFit 101” course, this book may be for you.
If you want to read a well-written, inspiring book that gets you fired up about CrossFit, I recommend passing on this one.

Cops to robbers?? Little misleading on the title. Cops don't do anything in this matter, but arrest people and then seizures follow as a result by higher ups.

Either way, it seems like there is a lot of stuff left out of this video, which is probably one sided, as is most things on YouTube. Being a police officer, I know sometimes property is seized in criminal matters, only when it's drug related. As far as Philadelphia goes, I'd be curious to see all these people who are losing property and what their tax / criminal record is like. I'm sure they owe money somewhere.

Just watched "The Forfeiture Machine Turns Cops into Robbers"

Objectivity: this video has none. It sounds like Philly's forfeiture process has got some pretty serious conflicts of interest, but this video's tone and imagery are ridiculously one-sided. I wouldn't be surprised if this was actually a campaign advertisement created for the upcoming congressional elections.

Comment #44 - Posted by: Joe Northside m/35/70"/200 at August 18, 2014 7:28 AM

A BIG thank you to Justin, Chris, Donovan, Todd, Ashley and Katie for putting on a great seminar this weekend in Jacksonville @ Crossfit SS! I learned a great amount that I look forward to not only applying to myself, but to coaching many athletes down the road with the knowledge you have shared and taught me! I also met some awesome people - I can never say enough good things about the camaraderie that is instantaneous when you meet fellow athletes.
TO MOMMYS-TO-BE: I took this course 5 months pregnant. Do not be discouraged! In fact, I think this is a great time to get your L1 because it's a time where you are scaling back and can focus on improving your techniques and remembering the fundamentals and basics! You also become a great example to potential coaches in your class who learn a little something extra when you potentially have a pregnant athlete one day. So an even bigger thanks goes to the instructors for being so supportive!

Comment #45 - Posted by: Vanessa P. at August 18, 2014 7:40 AM

@Joe N - I finished the book a couple weeks ago. I actually enjoyed it for the most part. I get where you are coming from with it being dry. There are parts where I was found myself thinking "ugh. Is this chapter over yet? Let's get to the part where people are doing WOD's!" I thought it was a decent book overall. Good read for beginning crossfitters (I've only been doing it for 3 months now)

It was a phenomenal L1 weekend at CrossFit Verve. The trainers were arguably the most professional, knowledgeable, and dynamic individuals I've been around in my entire military/academic career. The Chan's likely have the highest level of CrossFit knowledge of any couple in the world and it was a great opportunity to learn from them and the rest of the team. Thanks Matt, Cherie, Becky, Courtney, David, and Doug!

I am so thankful to have found Crossfit for myself (happiness, fitness, competition, setting goals, being my best self...), and I am very excited to hopefully start the next part of my Crossfit journey...bringing the benefits of crossfit to others in the community as a trainer. Thank you for the informational sessions and all of the conversations on the side. Hope to see some of you around the Northeast! - SK (Crossfit 716)

Comment #54 - Posted by: Steph K at August 18, 2014 10:22 AM

Regarding the "Cops into Robbers" video: Like every argument, there are two sides. The video is very one-sided. So if we take even half to be factual, it still seems unfair. Hopefully, Philly is an exception. I can tell you in San Diego trying to seize drug related property is a very difficult process for law enforcement.

CrossFit is a platform that is greatly suited for law enforcement but it seems as if the last two segments (Cops into Robbers and Do you have it up your ass) have been anti law-enforcement. While I always welcome different points of views, these videos are very slanted to the anti-L.E. point of view and make me wonder what HQ's motivation is for posting them.

As somebody that loves everything about CrossFit and believes wholeheartedly that the fitness and methods learned from CF can save the lives of cops and honor ones we've lost, I wonder why HQ would add fuel to the anti-L.E. movement. It seems there is definitely something wrong in Philly, but "Cops into Robbers"? Especially with what's going on in Ferguson right now.

Anyways, I'll be hitting my 100th hero WOD on Thursday and keep fighting the good fight, with citizens rights always in mind.

John, Jason, EC, Keith, Andrew, Gregg...you guys are awesome! The hilarious analogies (One does not simply walk into Mordor) and impromptu comments like "samesies"(<--Andrew) were just a few of the things that made the weekend incredibly enjoyable. I learned a lot and can't wait to become a coach. Thanks for showing us how it's done!

Surround yourself with great people! And that's what happened at the L1 Cert at Crossfit Reebok Firepower in Milton, ON!

Comment #59 - Posted by: Matt Lawrence at August 18, 2014 3:25 PM

The CrossFit Kids seminar in St. Louis this weekend was amazing. At my level one, the trainers highly recommended this course to all of us, and now I understand why. The CFK trainers John, Jen, Jon, and Christian were truly passionate about the CFK program, which makes their teaching so valuable to those of us just starting. After the course, I feel confident in my ability to train young crossfitters and I am proud to be a part of this community!

Comment #60 - Posted by: Sara at August 18, 2014 3:26 PM

Earlier today, I wrote what I thought was a very respectful comment questioning the merits of CFHQ and their posting of what seem to be one-sided law enforcement videos.

However I don't see my comment posted which means it must have been blocked by CFHQ. If that occurred, it's even more disturbing then the videos and just unfair. As a devoted CrossFitter that is always praising CFHQ and the great lessons to be learned here, I truly hope it was a glitch and that CFHQ is open to all views.

Comment #61 - Posted by: Shawn at August 18, 2014 4:34 PM

I'm not sure why Crossfit.com posted a link to the video "The Forfeiture Machine Turns Cops Into Robbers." I always thought the CrossFit machine was pro-police, maybe I was wrong? As a law enforcement officer for over 12 years, that video was nothing more than rhetoric. I think Crossfit.com should have vetted this one out, especially when they highlight some of the law enforcement heroes who died in the line of duty in their hero workouts. Just my take.

Comment #62 - Posted by: Travis at August 18, 2014 4:45 PM

I just want to say thanks to Joe, Matt, McCoy and Pedro for being amazing coaches and great guys. This weekend was a tremendous days for me. We have learned a lot and for sure, we love more CF today that we loved yesterday. Thanks to 2725 for being a great host too.

Comment #63 - Posted by: José at August 18, 2014 5:06 PM

@Shawn, your post is undoubtedly caught in the spam filter. Don't take it personally. All but the most egregiously insulting posts make it through, even when they disagree vehemently with HQ.

@Travis, a video like this one is no more or less indicative of HQ's viewpoint than any other (except the naked women; HQ is in favor of naked women). Dissect it and show why it is nonsense in your opinion, just as folks who are not in agreement with Libertarian posts, for example, should do.

Cheers.
