I wouldn't be trying front and back uprises until you have had proper joint preparation or some gymnastics training, it is one of those beginner movements that will easily leave you out of the gym for a month or two if not done correctly.

cheers

Double-unders left and didn't really come back. Just tried to go steady on the snatches. Mostly unbroken, took short breathers here and there. Did them alternating arms. Surprisingly, felt more fatigued from the double-unders. Maybe mental as I was missing a lot.

To all of those out there who are still wondering what type of dumbbell snatch to do (i.e. single arm alternating, double dumbbell, power vs. squat snatch, etc), here's my advice.

Bottom line, I did, and recommend doing alternating, single-arm dumbbell (or kettle bell) snatches for most people.

First and foremost, don't spend too much time fretting about this - the most important thing is that you pick something that you can complete and then you record what you did and the results. Like so many other WODs, this one may come up again (even if it doesn't, it is a great hotel WOD!) and if you record your WOD and results you'll be able to compare your performances.

Second, like I said, pick something you can complete. There are videos out there of folks doing doing dumbbell squat snatches, double KB snatches, double dumbbell power snatches, and probably one of some beast doing double KB squat snatches. The problem is, most of us happen to do this as a hobby. I recommend going with the alternating, single arm dumbbell power snatch unless you are really proficient and are looking for a more skill based WOD.

Comment #122 - Posted by: mlt at April 7, 2014 3:09 PM

Dumbbell sn@thches with no other specifics means take a dumbbell from the ground to overhead in one move with one arm. "Alternating" was not specified, so you can use whichever arm you want for however many reps you want.

50# for left arm, 30# for right. Lost count, but I know it was far less than what I'm seeing posted here--somewhere in the 110-130 range. Either I was miscounting anyway, or my double-under skill is seriously pathetic. Never rested on the snatches (power, alternating arms each rep).

Do you have a high jump during DUs? When I was less efficient at them, my DUs included a very high jump and my feet usually hurt during and after.

Comment #132 - Posted by: buffedout at April 7, 2014 3:45 PM

Not sure about the first two rounds but managed 100 DUS and 40 dumbell snatches in the last round. Not too bad for first time WOD movements. No problem stringing the double unders together but serious problems maintaining the pace

They did an excellent job teaching/coaching the CrossFit Competitors Course at CrossFit Verve/Denver Colorado (April 5 & 6, 2014) Each and everyone brought in great information and advice ... They really synced well together and did an awesome job coaching as a team. The curriculum was well thought out, organized, balanced out, and covered everything important. Tom and I learned so much and have been inspired!

These guys are so positive! They were definitely passionate about helping and sharing their knowledge and experience to us fellow CrossFitters. No double unders, just skipping. Need a lot of work on skipping in general. Someone had left a decent rogue bearing rope in the toy bin at the gym and that made my day! My form and pace were pretty good I think - it didn't look like my first time. Now I just need to build up this skill and get to double unders...

Also first time with the db snatch, after I realized I could have gone a bit faster.

1 minute skipping
1 minute 50# db snatch - 8 reps
2 minutes skipping
2 minutes 50# db snatch - 22 reps
3 minutes skipping
3 minutes 50# db snatch - 30 reps

Worked on rack position, cleans and situps on the ab mat afterwards, as well starting to learn behind the neck snatch grip jerk and catching it on my traps. Three weeks of constant front squats and my rack position is improving already! Cleans almost there!

Thanks to all the L1 seminar staff at North Atlanta over the past weekend. It was great to discuss the reasoning behind CrossFit's methods in an environment where questions were welcomed and clarity was provided. This past weekend in Atlanta exceeded my expectations, which were already high. Thank you to Chuck for being a great MC to keep us moving and covering everything as needed. The rest of the staff--Kristin, Leah, Andrew, John, Todd--you were all great! I learned more about the movements I came to learn, and I left better able to coach someone through the movements because of you. Thanks for making my trip to CrossFit North Atlanta well worth the trip, the weekend, and the money for the course. CrossFit North Atlanta, thanks for hosting us! If I could do it all over, I wouldn't change a thing.

Paced it out stupid, but it was in pursuit of a PR, so it's ok right?

I realized about 70 reps into the first set of double unders that I had a shot to get 100 consecutive for the first time (previous best was 70). It completely spent me for the rest of the workout, but I got there.
Dumbbell snatches at 50 were pretty much a breather. Just kept a steady pace alternating.

Ended up with 339 total, didn't keep track of individual rounds.

NorCal Level 1 cert this past weekend was amazing. I feel like my brain is still processing the overwhelming amount of information I learned from Miranda, Katie, Gabe, Rick, Margaux, Johnny, Austin, and Laura! You guys made us feel so welcome, you were so patient and understanding, and are genuine, real people. Your attitudes and the whole Level 1 cert experience exemplify why the Crossfit community is so amazing - it really has changed my life. Thank you thank you thank you!
