Cleans- Squat or Power?
Isn't it by default a squat unless power is specified?

Comment #2 - Posted by: bb at March 24, 2014 6:17 PM

@bb - with CrossFit, I believe power clean or squat clean is acceptable when just a "clean" is specified. Usually, if a squat clean is required, they will specifically mention that.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Jon at March 24, 2014 6:46 PM

Linda is always squat cleans. You can do power, but then it is Power Linda.

"Linda is miserable." Enjoy!

Comment #7 - Posted by: Siya at March 24, 2014 8:27 PM

@Siya
If you weigh 200, it means 300 lbs dead lift, 200 lbs bench press, and 150 lbs squat clean.

Enjoy!

Last time I did it I pretended I weighed 25 lbs less than I really do and it still about killed me.

Comment #8 - Posted by: JasonR at March 24, 2014 8:51 PM

Is it really this weight for women too? I can definitely do the deadlifts and cleans as RX'd but my 1rm bench is my body weight.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Stephanie at March 24, 2014 8:58 PM

@bb, Mel is right. And for the WOD demo, click Compare to 130905 and then click Compare to 120709. You'll see it's Cleans with a squat.

@Stephanie, see CrossFit Brand X forums for scaled versions. Typically women's weights are 70% of men's.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Glorybelle 5'5/135/44/F at March 24, 2014 9:27 PM

What's the recommendation for folks with just one bar? I can easily change out plates, but lose much of the metabolic stress with so much time between sets.

Last time, with my son's help spotting and changing plates out, this took some 50 minutes.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Jim R. 51/5'8"/155 at March 24, 2014 10:05 PM

My 1RM DL is about 85% of my body weight.
So...this should be fun.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Elle at March 24, 2014 10:23 PM

Scale appropriately guys. Your goal is to maintain the stimulus of the WOD for your particular level of fitness.

Something that I have found helpful is the idea that Coach programs for the best athletes in his gym, AKA the world. So on a day where the WOD is Diane for instance, consider say RF Jr's max DL at (for convenience's sake) lets say 450lbs.

The WOD is programmed for 1/2 RFs max. So if your max DL is 250lbs, do Diane at 125, not 225...

For me I will be doing the Linda at
225
185
135
I weigh 190-200lbs. Hm, might do 145 or 155 on the cleans actually. But anyway, you get the idea.

Comment #13 - Posted by: andrew at March 24, 2014 11:32 PM

@ Jim, IDK the official recommendation if there is one.

But personally, again-you are trying to maintain the stimulus of the WOD, I would just get after it rather than changing the weights after every exercise.

I would probably double the reps of DL, 1.5x the reps of bench and use the appropriate weight for the cleans.

So if you are about my weight and fitness level I would just use 135 and do:
20 DL, 15 Bench, 10 Clean
18 DL, 14 Bench, 9 Clean
16 DL, 12 Bench, 8 Clean
...etc

I always get confused when people say "squat clean". I was under the impression that there is a "clean" and a "power clean". I know that a "clean" involves the full squat, so I assume people are using the phrase "squat clean" in reference to a "clean". Can someone clarify for me?

CrossFit,

I am looking to become more involved in CrossFit Defense (is there a certification course for this?) and also CrossFit for Kids. I know that there is a certification for that, but are there ways to be active in those areas of CrossFit without just becoming certified? Just curious, as they peak my interest...

Comment #20 - Posted by: Nick Metzger at March 25, 2014 4:27 AM

People, be smart with your choices on this workout. I know a lot of people want to RX, but the truth is, as someone mentioned, if your 1 RM for your Bench Press is your body weight, then I would highly suggest scaling at least your Bench Press portion of this workout. Do not let your brain get in the way of your body. We all have strength's and weaknesses, and the goal is to maintain/ progress the strengths, and attack the weaknesses (at least in my opinion).

What's the sense in trying to bench press your 1 RM ten times, and hurting yourself, so that you will not be able to do anything next time? Just think things through first. Maybe over time, your goal could be do this workout RX, just work towards that goal.

Some fun facts!

0.0000% chance of occupying 3 bars at the globo gym
0.0000% chance of buying multiple bars for this WOD
0.0001% chance of me ever doing this WOD
0.0002% chance of being struck by lightning this year

I find that I generally scale well to about 50% of RX. As a result, I will be doing this pretending I weigh 85lbs.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Juba Damiani at March 25, 2014 5:12 AM

@ Krista - You're right, the Clean as it was originally developed always involved the squat but CrossFit kinda muddied those waters a bit when it started being referred to as the Squat Clean, probably for the layfolk who didn't know the difference between that and the Power Clean. I have found that if you want to work on the "Squat" Clean in a WOD, go for it. If you want to "Power" it up, rock that out. Each is going to give you a different stimulus, both in Linda will fry you slam up if you choose your weight right. I wouldn't get bogged down with the difference, but many folks lean toward the Power Clean because they are better at it and faster, and it is probably slightly less hellish than the Squat Clean. Again, both depend on the weight you choose.

@ Nick, check out the "Crossfit Training" tab on the iupper left of the mainsite home screen. That will take you into the "Specialty Trainer" courses that you're talking about.

Jim R. -- my $0.02 -- with one bar I'd load my clean weight, put collars on, then just add a 45 to each side for DLs. Sub weighted dips (ring or regular) for BP. Keeps the same rep scheme and doesn't take much time changing plates.

for this WOD, the clean is not specified, so use any technique as long as the bar goes from floor to shoulders and you finish with knees and hip extended.

Also, for those with only 1 bar, do bench first, deadlift, then clean to help go faster through the transitions of changing the weights.

Fwiw, Joe N got it right but here is how to think about it.

When the programmed WOD says clean it is ambiguous between the squat clean and power clean. This means it is your choice, and I'm competitions, most people should do what they are fastest at.

When the WOD is programmed with a power clean the programmer has something specific in mind the stimulus they are after is more appropriately achieved by power cleaning the weight than squat cleaning. If you have to squat clean the Rxd to get under it you should scale the WOD.

And of course, the same is true for to squat clean. If it is Rxd the programmer wants you to be taking the time and squatting below parralell, again they have something specific in mind that this movement achieves that a power clean does not. If you naturally power most of the weight you work with like Jason Khalipa you should (work on that) but for the immediate future you should receive the bar in the front rack, do a full depth front squat, stand back up, drop the weight, and do it all over again!

D.S., a Linda after a different WOD sounds really exhausting...

Bill M, good advice, subbing weighted dips for the bench to save time/preserve the stimulus. And your Linda was a fast...nicely done, as usual.

Comment #64 - Posted by: Jim R./51/5'8"/155 at March 25, 2014 11:33 AM

Jim R -- I just remembered several years ago RF Jr.'s box posted a wod called "Linda-ish" that called for C2B pull-ups instead of DLs. That's one less bar, and perhaps combined with weighted dips you could use your bar for cleans with no need to change weights.

Linda (scaled by reducing prescribed weight 30lbs each movement)
10, 9, 8, 7....1
Squat Clean 100lbs (Nicole Carrol does squat cleans in the demonstration video. I will do anything she says. Sigh.)
Bench Press 140lbs
Deadlift 225lbs

Time: 22:14

Last time I did this with 80, 125, and 170lbs respectively in 21:22. That works out to 967lbs per minute. This time was up to 1149lbs per minute. An improvement of 182lbs per minute! I love the benchmark workouts!

If you have only one bar, I would use it for deadlifts, since I can't think of a good sub for those. Substitute pushups or handstand pushups for the bench press. Cleans are a fast, powerful hip drive move, so sub something like high box jumps, heavy kettlebell swings, or even muscle ups.

I don't understand those who fret about the prescribed weights. Reduce them if they're too much! The prescribed weights and reps are for the world elites. Mere mortals must adjust.

Think of it this way: if the best guys can do a certain WOD as prescribed in 10 minutes, then try to scale it down to where you can do it in roughly the same time. If it's taking you 45 minutes, you're not getting the intended stimulus. Slash weights and reps. Use progressions and substitutions. If you do the movements as well as you can, there is no cheating. It's your workout. Make it only as hard for you as it is for them.

I'm new to crossfit. Been lifting weights awhile but never worked legs much. Weight lifting has nothing on crossfit. It's the hardest thing I've ever done only to be topped by the next wod. Love it so far

Either broke or sprained my right forearm. CNN will now contact me to do a story on how dangerous CrossFit is, even though I didn't injure my arm doing a workout.

So, did a one-arm Linda:

Left-arm suitcase deadlift, barbell with 135 pounds
Left-arm DB bench press, 50 pounds (heaviest DB)
Left-arm DB power clean, 50 pounds
12:48

Now I can't use either of my arms. Brilliant.

Linda at 295, 175,145, 30.07! PR by five minutes. Would have been my first Rx'ed Linda, but the shoulder just wasn't jiggly w 195. Still, awesome to get it done and I almost didn't WOD because I'm not well recovered from yesterday.

I have always tried to do Linda as unbroken as possible. This time, I did singles on the cleans, and generally doubles and triples on the deeds and bench w minimal rest. PR by five minutes!

I wish I was kidding. My left arm is fine, if a little fatigued. I'll know for sure tomorrow. Considering I can still move my hand around and open and close it, I think it may just be sprained. In any case, my left arm is going to be very strong by the time my right arm heals. I appreciate your concern, and well done on your Linda PR.

Warmed up with a 4km run in 18:10s. The workout was much tougher than expected, and changing weights took a fair bit of time. Total time of 36:24. Something to improve on, that's for sure.

Comment #119 - Posted by: Alojz M/42/189cm/91kg at March 25, 2014 7:02 PM

130905's Linda was my first crossfit WOD ever, and looking back, I discovered my wife and I did it wrong. Did back squats instead of squat cleans. Ha!
Since 130905, we stopped going to the local Y, and started building the garage gym up. So, as much as I wanted to do this when I saw it, I was unable due to only one barbell at home.
I haven't been posting as actively lately either, mainly due to the fact that I've been 50% following CFFootball/50% self programming lately. Today did:
Strength: Press 3x5 at 135#
WOD: 15-12-9
30#DB Thrusters
Dynamic Pushups
Russian Twist (holding 25#plate)
9:48
Good work everyone!

I absent-mindedly used the good bar for the bench and one with almost no knurling for the deadlifts and cleans. I think I hurt my fingers a little trying to hold on to that damn thing.

Scaled quite a bit. Definitely could've gone heavier on Bench and Cleans (almost all reps unbroken). Lower back wasn't liking all of the heavy DLs, so scaled the weight back.

22:00

Body Weight: 180 lbs
DL: 225 lbs (first 2 Rounds), 185 After that
BP: 145 lbs
PC: 115 lbs

Did this one in my driveway. If it was ever a question, my neighbors definitely know now that I'm a lunatic. Lol

Bench Press - 2 22.5$ dumbbells (no spotter so it's easier to bail with these)
Squat Cleans - 65#

Long time since I've done this one. I did this last night for the time doing full squat cleans instead of hang power cleans.
MUCH HARDER and I will do this from now on for sure.
DL (205 lbs)
Bench (135 lbs)
Clean (full squat cleans with 100 lbs)
All DL and Bench Press were unbroken but I did break up the cleans for the 10-5 rounds, from 4-1 unbroken.
GREAT wod and MUCH harder than I remember, probably due to doing full squat cleans this time.
