U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Justin James "JJ" Wilson, 24, of Palm City, Florida, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was killed on March 22, 2010, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife Hannah McVeigh, parents Lance and Frances, brother Christopher, and sister Jamie-Ella.

I would suggest picking your own weight, one that is manageable but at the same time challenging for you. If you're talking about what the women's weight is I would guess it's #135

I want to thank CrossFit; not just HQ but also the community as a whole. I discovered the "What is Fitness?" CFJ article when I was going through a very difficult time in life. My father had left town, I was doing poorly in school and I became depressed- to the point of abusing alcohol, drugs and engaging in suicidal behaviors. Upon reading this article, however, I was hooked; it all made sense to me- the definition of fitness, the methodology, the nutrition, etc. CrossFit was SO much more interesting to me than anything I was learning about in college. When I attempted my first CrossFit WOD, Cindy, I was left on the ground, out of breath and laying in a pool of sweat; but, for the first time in a long time I felt absolutely great. This marked the beginning of my journey.
Fast forward to today: I practiced squat cleans, did Open WOD 14.2 and practiced an 8 minute AMRAP of KB swings, sit-ups and box jumps that I'll be doing at the 2014 Festivus Games. I'm now a CF Level 1 Trainer, a personal trainer and a bootcamp instructor; hoping to one day own and operate my own affiliate. I'm stronger, faster, smarter, successful and much, much happier due to my discovery of CrossFit.
Despite the current legal battle and any controversy that will/ is beginning to arise, I will always support the fitness program- no, lifestyle- that helped me better myself as a person and find my purpose.
So thank you CrossFit, and the CF community, for saving my life.

Scaled, squat cleans 50 kg or about 110 lbs, plane hand stand push ups, if you can call my attempt at hand stand push ups , hand stand push ups. Truthfully there were a couple of bro reps in there. But I was out of breath most of the time, so I did accomplish a work out

hand stand push ups (and some of them were bro reps, but no bro reps on the squat cleans, just good old fashioned broken sets, 5 was the most I cracked out before putting the weight down so that I kept good form.)

Sunday musings (at war)…

There are real wars afoot.

As I prepare to launch into a new topic for my next round of "serious" reading (I am slowly working my way through the very heavy science in "Waterlogged") I stumbled upon a curious historical overlay. My daily newspaper sat on a coffee table under which sat a picture of a paper from the 1940's. We have been at war in the United States, no matter how you care to characterize that war, for much longer than the entirety of WWII. Yet the tenor of our homeland experience could not be more different.

The books I've got cued up are "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" by Ben Fountain, and "Redeployment" by Phil Klay, the first discovered in that newspaper above, the other from an interview of the author on the radio while driving to work (note: Evernote is brilliant for remembering that kind of stuff). Thus far I've successfully avoided reading a full review of either, having discovered in the first 2 sentences of a NYT review that there'd be more editorializing on the reviewer's part than reviewing. YMMV of course, especially if you agree with the reviewer.

What's drawn me to these two particular books, indeed what has drawn me to this topic, is the conversational emphasis in both. Each is written from the points of view and in the voices of soldiers and Marines talking about being in a war. Driving to work this week I was struck by the complete absence of these voices in my life. Looking at the front page of a newspaper ca. 2014 beside the image from 1946 it's clear that my experience is not unique. We have had men and women in a war for some 12 years now, but we are hardly a nation AT war, at least in comparison with our nation ca. 1946.

We barely talk about Iraq, Afghanistan, or Al Qaida at all, while America in the 40's talked about little else. If my experience is typical there is very, very little conversation that occurs between those who have served and those who have not, even though the length of our present wars has likely generated a similar number of war veterans walking among us then and now. Were the conversations of war only on the front page back then? Was there so little discourse about what it means to have been in a war when the veterans returned in the 40's, too?

The United States has experienced exactly 3 incidences in which our country has been attacked since the Civil War. All of our wars and conflicts since then have been prosecuted on the soil of other lands. this is no less true now than it was in 1945, no less true following 9/11 than it was after Pearl Harbor. The towering strength of the U.S. economic engine insulates us today from the daily sharing of the war effort as completely as our new information technology makes the wars almost completely available for viewing. Interesting dichotomy, huh? War footage on demand, up to the minute, up close and personal, no war bonds or fuel rationing required.

It's different now, you say. It's not the same now as it was then. Is that really true, though? All wars are unjust and all wars are just; it depends only on which team you're on at what time. Did those who hated the wars of yesteryear hate them any less than now? Is the aftermath of being in war any greater or lesser now than then? Never having served, never having been in war, I have no standing to say, but from afar it doesn't seem any less terrifying to have been detonated by a mortar in a WWI trench or bazooka in a WWII tank or an IED in a Humvee in Fallujah.

And there's my point. I don't know. There is no conversation, no opportunity to know. I don't know why that is. I don't think we need to re-introduce war bonds or ration nylons (imagine the carnage at V!ctoria's Secret) to know we are at war. What I do think is that we will continue to have a disconnect between young people in a war and their country not at war until we engage in those conversations. War always seems to find us, for whatever reason, even when we are mostly minding our own business. We should know more about what it means to be at war.

When you come home I'll be ready to listen whenever you are ready to talk.

Being born with the male anatomy and muscle, already gives an advantage over other women. If you all don't set the standard, then anything goes. Even if HE isn't the best woman out there competing, there will be other men showing off as women and it will completely ruin the female competition. They will be coming after you in more lawsuits. They will never stop the bullying until you cave in, I ask that you don't, and push them back. Stay strong.

First hero workout. Scaled initially to Pack at 115# w/ L-pushups from 30" box. After 3 rounds, I dropped to 95# to have proper form. 115# was sloppy. Glad I scaled down; this got really slow towards the end.

I built a set of parallettes today using the guide in the crossfit journal. I gave it a go but I still haven't mastered HSPU's let alone these very deep ones required for today's WOD.

Anyway workout FAILED. So I changed to another good workout I found online... In honor of the new "300" movie I did:

Having served under a Republican president, and having left active duty under the same one, I can assure you that whomever sits in the Oval Office doesn't affect how veterans (and current members) are perceived or treated. It's up to us civilians to remember and connect accordingly.

Bingo, fine words that you write. I am as guilty as most in forgetting what our Warrior Men and Women are going through on the other side of the world. A hero WOD is an occasional reminder, but is far short of a full conversation. I can’t put my finger on why it’s not happening, but I think there’s good value if it did.

My daughter & I are doing the Open in honor of my son, her brother & in memory of SGT Derek McConnell, his friend, who was severely injured in a IED attack & died after returning home . . . Since my PR for squat cleans is 176Ib I had to scale. Decided to load my body weight (155Ib) for the sq.cleans, which got uggly pretty quick. But it´s a Hero WOD, so...

Found out what a parallette is, but I have no such thing. Tried first round with two instable boxes, but since they slided I went for regular HSPU.

Had to take a day off yesterday as my legs were/are completely shot. Tallied it up and I've done almost 500 squats and run 5 miles in the last 6 days. My knees in particular are really stiff and hurt every time I stand up or sit down.

Scaled Squat Cleans to 115 lbs until the 8'th set, when my form started getting bad. Dropped it to 95 lbs after that. Did HSPUs piked/assisted with my feet on top of a 4' tall work bench. Also, I did 10 HSPUs on the last set.


Might try to do "R.J." this afternoon if I'm feeling it. My legs are telling me no, but my mind is telling me to get it done so I can take another day off. We'll see...

Used home made pvc parallettes with 2 25lb bumpers and abmat under head. Created a deficit of about 5". Kipped up. Did a few doubles, but almost all single effort reps. A lot of time spent staring grimly at the parallettes. Very hard, but got 'er done!


I agree "Chloe" should not get to compete with the women. I don't think there's any "science" to read on that issue. You can remove penises and testes, install fake breasts, and inject all the hormones you want. There's still a Y chromosome in every cell. You're still a man... just one who feels better looking and acting like a woman. Crossfit should not violate the integrity of the women's competition to soothe someone's psychological issues.

I did regular handstand pushups --the most I've done in a wod by far. It still feels like a bit of an emergency when I kick up, like I've got to get the reps out as fast as possible before I come crashing down. I'm sure my form is horrible in a dozen ways as a result. Need to spend some time working on body control and positioning.



To Bingo's point, remember we have an all volunteer military now. In WWII, everyone was more engaged partly because every able-bodied male was obliged to go.

Now, while most of us ignore or forget the wars most of the time, those who have stepped up to serve endure most of the consequences. They are all heroic, just for having made the decision to join. We owe them thanks and recognition that in many ways they are the best among us.

55kg squat clean
Kipping HSPUs not on paralettes
Had to scale to piked HSPUs for last 3 or 4 in the middle rounds
Failed on clean 4 of 9 rep round and stopped because can't drop weights in globo gym

BUT, I got 9 HSPU without breaking in first round - previous pr was about 5 :)
