Backstage Pass: Open Workout 14.1 - [video]

My two most hated movements together. For some reason I'm excited.

Comment #1 - Posted by: buffedout at March 5, 2014 5:10 PM

nothing like 2.5 mile run and 125 burpees.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Greg at March 5, 2014 5:21 PM

Does anyone know if a 500m row is the HQ-approved sub for a 400m run (or 1000m row for an 800m run)? I've always found it much harder to maintain a 2:00/500m row pace than a 2:00/400m run pace.

Thanks all.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Jim R./51/5'8"/160 at March 5, 2014 5:22 PM

@ buffedout
I feel the same way
especially in 19 degree weather

good work to all yesterday
you will all crush this one
I'm guessing box jumps and toes to bar for 14.2

Comment #4 - Posted by: Mike Andridge/44/5'8"/175 at March 5, 2014 5:29 PM

@ Jim R yes a 500 meter row is the scale for a 400 meter run. So if you row instead of run it should be another 5 round workout with a 1k row

Comment #5 - Posted by: Logan Southard M/155/19/5'6" at March 5, 2014 6:05 PM

23:32 as Rx'd.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Gavin at March 5, 2014 6:29 PM

@Jim R. subbing a 500m row for a 400m run wouldn't really make sense. Considering that an average time for a 500m row is ~1:45 while an average 400m run is ~1:20, and a good 500m row is <1:25 while a good 400m run is <60 sec, it makes sense that a 400m row would be comparable to a 400m run. Same goes for an 800m row / 800m run.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Mike M at March 5, 2014 7:02 PM

Read it wrong did 800 burpees and 25 meter run

Comment #8 - Posted by: Meggazappin at March 5, 2014 7:30 PM

@Meggazappin
For 5 rounds?!? ;)

Comment #9 - Posted by: Windlord at March 5, 2014 7:40 PM

AAAAHHHHH!!! Mikko Salo got pneumonia and couldn't put up a score for 14.1 so he can't compete as an individual! He is likely gonna get better soon. HQ, isn't there some kind of former champion clause that you can use to overlook this rule and get him into regionals at least??

Comment #10 - Posted by: Fish at March 5, 2014 7:46 PM

Second to last event of Frostbite 2014 @ CrossFit Long Island City. Nice shot!

Comment #11 - Posted by: Vadim at March 5, 2014 8:18 PM

Thanks Logan and Mike M. To try to create a comparable timed workout w/ the rest o' ya'll, I'll go w/ the 800m row.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Jim R. 51/5'8"/160 at March 5, 2014 8:42 PM

Does any else have the feeling that all open workouts are going to be repeat open WODS?

Last year there was 1 repeat Open WOD and 1 repeat games WOD. I just have a feeling there will be a lot of repeats to assess the improvement of overall fitness to truly see if we as a whole are ready to step-up to the next level of fitness.

With that being said, maybe 13.4 will also be known as 14.2 (7 AMRAP: 3 CJ and 3 T2B then increase by 3 each round). Of course it's impossible to predict, so just my 2 cents!

Good morning all,

Just a quick note to say how cool it is to see a new group of folks stepping up to answer questions, offer encouragement, and generally make this a wonderful place to be. I won't name names for fear I'll miss someone, but please know that I'm not the only OG to have noticed.

Good on all of ya!

Cheers.

@Kri$ #33, yes, I did it on a track while my son was having soccer practice. But my running wasn't great, it's a terrible goat for me, and I've put on weight in an attempt to increase strength. I try to keep my 400m splits at 1:30-1:40. I feel like where I really excelled and have improved is with the burpees. 25 burpees have taken me 2-3 minutes in the past. I can now do them in about 1 minute. For me it's all mental. I set a steady pace and don't stop until I'm done. Formerly I would bust out 10 rapidly and then catch my breath for 10 seconds and then do 5 rapidly and then catch my breath for 20 seconds and then do 4...you can see where it's going.

so this not on topic... but for level 1 cert.. there is no physical fitness test? The testing is strictly written?.. Im mean im in decent shape and have used CF intermittently for a couple of years.. But for 10 years before that i've lifted body building style.. Either way would appreciate some personal info.. I also train MMA so my cardio is better then average, but i cant do muscle ups and can only do about 5 pull ups, for 3 sets, seeing as i weigh 250ish.. anyhow please advise Thanks in advance.. I ask because i was under the impression there was a physical fitness test involved but when i looked at FAQs for 1 near me, no mention of physical fitness just written test and 100% participation for physical .

Comment #105 - Posted by: 0russo81/M/6ft/250ish at March 6, 2014 3:21 PM

@ Orusso

You are correct, the test is only written (no physical component). That being said you are required to participate in the wods and exercises.

Have fun at your Level 1!

@ Devon, Back in January I did a WOD after having not eaten in 24 hours, although mine was work/travel related, not intentional fasting. That being said, I ate like a horse right after the workout.

Happy Birthday Kevin.
I may adopt your birthday workout on my next one. I started doing the Filthy 50 on my birthday when I turned 50, but I've stayed with 50 reps of each exercise. I like the idea of adding a rep each year, but I think that the Filthy 55 would just suck a bit too much.

The 50+ crowd on here always motivates me.

@Aghostino, Rx'd =As prescribed. In other words, it means you did the requested exercise with no modification to your movement or the weight or the rep count. It's a good goal to have, but it is not a good idea for beginners.

Didn't go all out due to some factors. Hurt my back on Fran and then my wife had our second little one on Friday. But this workout was a good one to come back in on. Also had to fight two old ladies off my treadmill at the gym. People kept trying to take it while I'm doing burpees in front of it.
