Just kidding. Good luck, everyone.

Comment #3 - Posted by: buffedout at February 27, 2014 5:24 PM

Did anyone else watch the standards video with confusion when the demonstrator conducted a clean and jerk and the narrative indicated that the movement is "ground to overhead anyhow"? I'm confused. Is it OK to get the bar overhead any way you can as long as you are locked out properly or do you have to execute a power snatch? Thanks.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Glenn M/44/70"/188.5 at February 27, 2014 5:35 PM

Amazing to watch Fisher/Hendren power through that and still be so far from Froning's score they kept referencing from 2011.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Brad B 34/m/6'2"/170 at February 27, 2014 5:35 PM

Fisher - 373 Reps
Hendren - 358 Reps

Be interesting if anyone can be Fronings record set in 2011, which was 448 Reps..

Comment #6 - Posted by: Mason at February 27, 2014 5:46 PM

Glenn
They said it's really ground to head anyhow. Most athletes can muscle snatch these weights no problem and cleans and jerks are less efficient but could save shoulders if absolutely necessary

Comment #7 - Posted by: Zac at February 27, 2014 5:59 PM

@Glenn, I don't think it gets any more direct than that. It's GTOH. Castro probably expects that power snatches will be the most efficient movement at this weight, but yes, when you get tired, clean and jerk.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Chris at February 27, 2014 6:15 PM

Respect to Castro for the Ogar shirt.

Comment #9 - Posted by: D. Peterson at February 27, 2014 6:27 PM

@Glenn

When the movement specified is ground to overhead, you can do whichever of the G2O movements you choose. When the movement is specified, i.e. "Power Snatch," that's what has to be done, I believe.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Sam at February 27, 2014 6:34 PM

2 rounds with 85#

Double unders kill me. Time to practice.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Brent L at February 27, 2014 6:48 PM

@Glenn, ground to overhead is fine because it's tough to judge a snatch, especially with athletes that are inexperienced. Many will half snatch/half press it out overhead all in the same movement. Most of the guys will muscle-snatch it. So for simplicity it's G2O.

Brand-X scales DU's to tuck jumps for this WOD....Is that what you would do? Originally I was thinking 3x Singles but now I just don't know.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Glen G at February 27, 2014 8:34 PM

As RX'd
AMRAP 10:00 (30 DU's, 15 Power Snatches @ 75#)

Can only string together 3-8 DU's consecutively right now. Missed DU's slowed me down the last round after I started to get winded.

Glen G, try doing two-footed hops over your snatch barbell. It's much more taxing than singles and more realistic to doubleunders than tuck jumps.

Comment #33 - Posted by: Cassie at February 28, 2014 4:02 AM

The Open is designed to be "inclusive" for the world to join, CrossFit promotes it as "anyone can do it", but starting the Open with Double Unders, and alot of them if you complete a few rounds, is just ridiculous. The planning of the Open and the anticipation leading up to it, just to have it be 1. a repeat and 2. starting with Doubles is poor. The Open will suffer next year, in my opinion.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Jason at February 28, 2014 4:05 AM

@jason bro double unders are a basic crossfit movement. I think most people get caught up in the hype, but let us not forget, this is a competition. Yes, available for anyone and everyone to participate but a competition none the less.

Comment #35 - Posted by: Christopher Saucedo at February 28, 2014 4:22 AM

I will need to get double unders in my tool chest, that is why I did not sign up for the open. Hope to have them by next open. So will sub 3 singel for the doubles so I'm still geting rope work.

Comment #37 - Posted by: Joe Northside m/35/70"/195 at February 28, 2014 4:33 AM

Why would HQ state "Power Snatch" in the WOD description, when it clearly is "Ground to overhead anyhow", as can be read on the scoresheet and the standards video? I think there will be a ton of people who end up loosing their snatch or having to squat snatch when they could easily switch to c+j and remain steady on their cycle times if they just knew that this is just fine..

@Glenn - I think "ground to overhead" is the intended stimulus for this WOD, so clean and jerk qualifies. However, unless you have physical restrictions, the C&J is a poor strategy given the much faster cycle time of a power or muscle sn@tch.

Comment #46 - Posted by: Burcu at February 28, 2014 6:14 AM

@Jason,

14.1 = 11.1. Your prediction that 14.1 with its inclusion of DU will hurt the Open is curious. How do you reconcile your position with the fact that the Open has grown so prodigiously following 2011? Why do you think that the effect of 14.1 will be exactly the opposite of 11.1?

Comment #47 - Posted by: bingo at February 28, 2014 6:18 AM

4 rounds + 60 reps jump rope

Knee wont allow me to do double unders so I did 60 jump rope reps instead.

Comment #48 - Posted by: BW at February 28, 2014 6:28 AM

I'll be doing this on Monday. Today, modified and scaled DT:
12 DL
6 Squat Clean
3 Push Press
@60kg/132lb. Squat clean and push press for form and control with a heavier weight than I have done before. Still timed: 15:13.

On 14.1, I though that this was an incredibly inclusive way to start. The form book doesn't even require you to have mastered a snatch (as the requirement is "ground to overhead" if you check the games website) and almost everyone should be able to get their rx weight overhead. As for DU, a basic, fundamental piece of crossfit. Jump (really high if you have too!) and swing rope twice under feet. If you're proficient, you're fast; if not, you're slow or zero (happens to us all - remember Josh and the 405 DL in the games?). It's just you vs. you. That's the beauty. I'm not going to win anything other than the pride I take in my efforts to better myself.

Go hard everyone and enjoy!

DUs is one of the first things I learned... like someone else said, it's a very basic CF movement. Heck, the competition is doing triple unders these days. So if you can't do a DU... you're not even in the game. Now... this doesn't keep you from competing in the Open. The Open is all about hosting a friendly competition. If you're real good then you have the chance to prove that. If not, then fine... at least you have a standard to work towards as you view everyone else's results.

@ bingo, #36

The utility of the Open has changed between 2011 and 2014. Participation in the former was undertaken as a legitimate qualification stage towards the Games. A greater relative percentage of Open competitors, few as they were in 2011, had double unders. Today, however, the Open is marketed and publicized as, how Jason put it, inclusive. If you market 'inclusiveness' on the front-end you better have the deliverables. It ostracizes a large segment of the community who may not have double unders who forked over $20 to be a part of this community event. I don't see how the Open moving forward can promote competition and inclusion. Call it one or the other, but not both. Or, except the varied demands and create competitive and scaled divisions.

Comment #62 - Posted by: V at February 28, 2014 7:57 AM

correct me if I'm wrong since I've only been following Crossfit for a couple of years and at home, but isn't the right sub for double unders tuck jumps? A larger number of single unders don't replicate the more explosive intent of the DU, right?

If so can I sub box jumps for DU's? The pistoning effect of tuck jumps is one of the hardest exercise on my (chronic disc degenerative) back for some reason but box jumps I can control my core better ....

Comment #63 - Posted by: hank at February 28, 2014 8:02 AM

Worked late last night, woke up this morning in anticipation of signing up for the open and knocking out 14.1. DU's!!!! I can't do one for the life of me. And that is not for a lack of trying, doing Crossfit for over a year and being in very good shape. Disappointing. I love Crossfit but don't feel like starting out the open with a big GOOSE EGG. So good luck to everyone in the open, I'm going to miss competing this year. @Jason - good point but I don't agree that the open will suffer. However, the fact that it is a competition doesn't justify making one of the hardest movement to master (and I use the word master loosely)the very first exercise.

Comment #65 - Posted by: Cade at February 28, 2014 8:12 AM

OK! Let's think about what would be different if the Open was based on @Jason and @V's definition of "inclusiveness," i.e. removing all things that a percentage of participants can't perform as Rx'd:

No double-unders
No muscle-ups
No pistol squats
No pull-ups
No handstand push-ups
No heavy lifts
You get the picture...

In a word: lame!

Comment #68 - Posted by: Carlos Alfonso at February 28, 2014 8:37 AM

@ Joe, #65

You're supporting the point. What you, I, and many others would define as appropriate movements/loads for competition v. participation are frequently exclusive of one another. What % of all 'competitors' this year were coerced to join the Open because 'everyone can do it?' Now, what % of all competitors have double unders? It is not 'fun' to DQ or flail attempting DU for ten minutes, by the way. What this gets back to is that Jason and I believe a number of these individuals will be jaded in the following years of the Open and simply choose to not register. It is simply a different scenario comparing public response from 2011 to 2014.

Comment #71 - Posted by: Conor Henry at February 28, 2014 8:49 AM

@V,

I disagree with your premise that a greater % of Open participants in 2011 had DU, but I am willing to be shown data that proves it. My experience as a very well-traveled CrossFit OG is that the % of folks who have DU is probably GREATER now because of the Open. If you have data I'm more than OK with being shown that my experience is not accurate, but if we are simply going to compare memory and depth of observation I stand by my above post.

As we consider inclusiveness I'm puzzled as to why no one has pointed out the difference in the sn@tch requirements. If memory serves the rules did not permit the bar to pause between the floor and overhead in 2011, yet this year we are instructed that a C&J is permissible. In my mind this is a striking example of INCREASED inclusiveness, removing the mandate to be able to sn@tch the weight; many more people in the Open can C&J a higher number (load and reps), thereby including those who do not yet have a sn@tch.

Comment #72 - Posted by: bingo at February 28, 2014 8:58 AM

So I agree with the sentiment of wanting Opens to be inclusive, but I think that du's are a little over-hyped by people getting acquainted with CF (and I am in this group). I was happy that the first workout didn't start with a weight that I couldn't move, and I think both camps can be satisfied with "ladder" type WODs where things get more heavy/advanced as you move through them.

In my box I hear a lot of "get singles" or "keep trying" or "try to relax" for people that are plenty athletic/fit who for some reason can't do du's. But they maybe don't get the specific tactical advice that you'd get on a oly lift. The one day that I got really specific coaching about how I should be thinking about my jumping, my hands, etc it all "clicked," I was making them too hard for myself. So ask your coach to be specific until you get them and don't get psyched out! Have fun on 14.1 everybody!

Comment #73 - Posted by: Boston at February 28, 2014 8:58 AM

I have to stand with @bingo, @joenorthside, and many others on this one. There are a lot of competitors who can't complete unassisted pull ups, or GHD sit-ups in great volume. Limiting the movements to something that literally every athlete can do (not to mention having open and ready access to equipment for) with the wide variety of competitors now in the games would be nearly impossible.

As for me, I took a small hint from the programming, hopefully correctly. I do not have access to enough weight to max out my DL, nor do I have access to a C2 or a proper GHD. I chose not to sign up for the open for these reasons, though I will definitely at least try every workout. I look forward to doing this tonight, and I really look forward to see if Froning can break his PR set in 2011.

Cheers and good luck to all!

Comment #74 - Posted by: Nate at February 28, 2014 9:03 AM

Jason and V,
I get your point on inclusiveness, but it has to mean being able to do basic CF movements. This is a CF event, after all. I can't do du's, so I'm out. But I also know du's are foundational. Look at the snatch weight. That's inclusive--a foundational movement, at a weight that's achievable by most CFers but allows the stronger/faster/fitter to separate themselves from the pack. As the Open progresses to later rounds, do you think we'll see 75# snatches? I think not.

In short, inclusiveness has to be for those who can do CF stuff.

Comment #75 - Posted by: Jim R./51/5'8"/160 at February 28, 2014 9:06 AM

IMO, the inclusiveness argument is specifically directed at 14.1, and not necessarily the Open as a whole.
Consider a first time Open competitor with an incomplete mastery of the CF skills. You're going around telling everbody, including yourself, that you registered for the Open and you're so excited to see where you stand. Then 14.1 is announced and you can't even compete in the first event. A more inclusive workout for 14.1 would have fostered the stated goal of inclusiveness in the Open. I would fully expect double-unders and muscle-ups to appear in the Open, just not in the first event. I know DUs are pretty common for CF athletes, but I haven't got them yet.
On the other hand, I do appreciate the throwback to 11.1.

Comment #76 - Posted by: Neil at February 28, 2014 9:11 AM

Great workout of very standard CF movements. I can't string together any doubles, so the slower time caused by doing a single every other jump just motivates me to practice them more and improve. Jumping over an obstacle is a foundational human movement.

Comment #78 - Posted by: MF M/31/5'11/170 at February 28, 2014 9:20 AM

The archives show DUs appearing as far back as 18 Feb 2001. Gave us all plenty of time to practice...
:-)

Seriously, the open can't accommodate the lowest common denominator - it is a crossfit challenge and a look at the mainsite programming, together with the past years of Open programs, should give us all an idea of what to expect.

I know, for instance, that when muscle-ups appear, I'm going to bomb as I have never tried one (where I train there are no rings and no bar with clearance above it to allow for an attempt without potential severe cranial damage) and have no idea if I could do one. And they will be there...

Comment #80 - Posted by: Dan at February 28, 2014 9:23 AM

There is a small percentage who will be very upset by this, but if you have the crossfit knowledge/love to sign up for the open, you had to expect double unders to be on the docket. I also think that by putting this in 14.1, vs a later workout, they are being nice to those who were waiting for the announcement to decide whether or not to sign up.

I do, however, wish they had allowed single unders and simply made the requirement that the rope pass under the jumping athlete 60 times. It would have been more inclusive, but also given a potential advantage to those who have triple unders in their tool box. 20 triple unders vs 30 of the doubles could add up. This would have added a level of strategy for top athletes.

Well said. I think I can do 2 rounds of the snatch ok, but then it might get dicey. Then watched the video and saw that I could c & j and was honestly a little relieved. I think that may..may help me get a couple more reps. I get to give this one a go in about 4 hours.

2 rounds + 28 reps = 118 reps
:-( you know you got no DU technique if...
- you need 4 singleunders between each DU to get a rythm
- fail every second DU
- it lookes like 30'' boxjumps
:-)
punished myself with 100x 41k OHS afterwards

Wow, backlash against double unders? V and Jason obviously haven't been here for very long. These workouts are designed to be challenging for the fittest people on earth. Sorry if you can't hang; maybe you should have reviewed the open workouts from last year.

The open guarantees a few things- no running, no rowing, and lots of high rep movements. All the workouts have to be filmable and quantifiable by number of reps and take place in an environment that can have one static camera.

Don't complain when the next workout involves a pull-up bar or wall balls...they are coming.

I understand the risk of no reps and ROM issues but all that aside and all of my reps are legit, will they accept it without a second person?

Lots of emotion, can we agree that 'everyone' should not be encouraged to participate, at least in the context of a paid entry fee? Do you have empathy for the folks who ignorantly registered for something they cannot complete or are going to scale? Could the Open adopt a formate most local competitions have adopted -- division scaling?Jason's original point is that the Open will suffer long-term and I stand by that.

Ground-to-overhead permits inclusion, great, let's get folks to that point first -- only 30x double unders to go... Also, Brian, great addition to the discussion.

How is it not inclusive? The open on one hand is well" open" for anyone, however how do you have a worldwide competition that selects after 5 workouts the fittest from each region? Double Unders do you have them? if not practice, i can assure if you cant do double unders then the regionals and games are slightly beyond your current fitness level.

Comment #117 - Posted by: Matt P at February 28, 2014 12:35 PM

You're taking these points out of context. Do not have a vendetta against DU in the Open. However, when buzz words and slogans are advertised to the community that are not delivered that is wrong. These counterarguments have if fact been supporting arguments: If you cannot perform certain movements under certain loads, question whether to participate. BUT, why then are you being solicited for participation!?!

Comment #123 - Posted by: V at February 28, 2014 1:03 PM

Brilliant move by HQ to give folks like me the push needed to get over the hump of going from su to du. I have been putting it off for soooo long. Going to my box today to prove I can do at least one. If I can post even 2 reps in 10 minutes on the leaderboard, I'll be the happiest last place finisher in the world.

Comment #124 - Posted by: Bruce at February 28, 2014 1:04 PM

Thanks to everyone who has attempted to clarify the WO for me.

I see a conflict in the wording being used to clarify the WO. I think requiring a power snatch and then saying that it's "ground to overhead any how" clouds the standard. The video clearly demonstrates and explains the standard for the movement. Adding that last sentence confuses the standard.

If the intent of the WO was to just get the weight from the floor to overhead in any way possible then that should have been stated as the standard for the movement.

I'm satisfied that the potential confusion has been pointed out to HQ so no need to spend more time on this. Time to go and do some double-unders and power snatches. Good luck to all!

I still can't do double unders so I did 60 jumpropes. This was my first attempt at doing any type of snatch. I managed to do 3 rounds of 60 JR & 3 rounds of 95lb x 15 power snatches. Total 165. I will improve...

Comment #128 - Posted by: Jeb at February 28, 2014 1:22 PM

@ 108

To me, the concept of the "open" mean anybody can participate with out having any pre-qualifications.

Back in my motocross days, an open class meant any bike size, or riding ability was allowed to enter. That didn't mean that each rider would be able to effectively navigate the obstacles, i.e. big jumps, or complicated rhythm sections.

Furthermore, I haven't seen the word "inclusive" used in any of the advertisement (not saying they aren't using it), but if I did see it, I would assume it was synonymous with "open". Assuming the most strict definition of the word places unrealistic exceptions. Heck, pick any event, physical or mental, and try and apply the same definition of inclusive, and we can find someone who is unable to complete the task.

However, for people who truly understand and believe in CF, applying your definition of inclusive works for us. We train for the "unknown", and with the possibility of infinite movements, we welcome a challenge. Also, lets not forget that in 2010, Froning couldn't climb a rope, and hes the most dominate CF athlete to date.

Never been a big fan of DU's, especially with the new-fangled cable ropes. I learned on the vinyl style ropes and can usually string 20-30 of those together. As far as the competition aspect though, I think they should be a big part of the open if for no other reason than their only real application is for some sort of competition and not really any sort of functional fitness. There are many better ways to maintain the strain DU's provide without having to worry about learning that highly specific movement. Just saying.

Anyways, I think it is awesome how Crossfit is the only sport that allows everyone and anyone to compete and try to earn a shot at being the fittest on Earth. I applaud all of you for posting your scores against the best. I know Crossfit is the only sport where an underdog could actually come though, make it to the games because anyone can do the Open, compete, then, you never know what can happen. No matter your size or ability keep training and competing because it could you that breaks through! Good luck to everyone the rest of the 2014 Crossfit Open.

Glen G, happy to help.

I found the 3xsingles sub was insufficient stimulus and tuckjumps just made me want to learn doubleunders (therefore a good sub no doubt!).

For me the 2-footed barhops mimics the doubleunder leg movement very well and provides a similar physical stimulus. The only problem is that the shoulders get a rest when doing barhops - where this WOD does not give them a break.

@V,

You haven't really answered my question about the % of participants who have DU. Now there is a sense in your comments that this year there is some kind of mass coercion of CrossFitters to participate. While I can certainly agree that HQ is much better at publicizing the Open, and that there ads are much more compelling this year than last, that hardly reaches the level of coercion.

You may be concerned about Affiliates bringing pressure on athletes to register. That might be happening. Again, as a rather well-traveled observer of both Main Page and local versions of CrossFit, what I've found extraordinary this year is a definite trend in the OPPOSITE direction: Boxes opting out. Coaches only encouraging serious athletes to register. Affiliates not programming the Open WODs.

While there have been criticisms similar to yours in past years, and doubtless will be again this year, the choice of the double-under as proof that the Open is not inclusive enough seriously weakens your position, regardless of whether inclusivity is marketed by HQ or not.

I did enjoy the conversation and appreciate the cordial tone you carried throughout. Cheers.

98 rx'd. Double Unders are Amazing. *sarcasm*

My first attempt at DU's were in Open 12.4. I got 6 in 40 seconds (after an 11:20 Karen). My second attempt at DU's were in Open 13.3. I got 22 in just under 4 minutes (after an 8:09 Karen).

I've had a speed rope since Christmas from Santa Claus, and it has been on my workbench, still zip-tied up and in the OEM packaging until last night.

The 68 DU's (and 950 whips, 275 singles, etc) I did in Open 14.1 probably took me 9 minutes, as both sets of snatches were unbroken and couldn't have taken more than a minute each.

I have some work to do!!!

Comment #237 - Posted by: Fil W at March 2, 2014 10:04 AM

I have been in Crossfit for over a year. I have to say when i heard Double unders first up. I was gutted.. Why? Because I simply suck at them, why? I never practice them as much as other movements. I did 14.1 on the Saturday with bad double unders, and since then have been going over and over them and now being forced to do double unders and practice them over and over.. they are getting better. I am redoing 14.1 today. We all have "goats" and our goal is to confront them and practice them. None of the movements just come with out practice. A great learning for all involved.

Better by a bit than my 11.1 I think I got something like 279 last time. I have worked on my snatch and although I try to do mostly full squat snatches so I work on developing my confidence and third pull I felt much more efficient in the movement and was much more in control if the workout this time. DUs are pretty easy and have been. I use them for a warm up typically as well as an occasional MetCon component.
I was good about just keeping in moving I now convinced that with some practice I could probably be able to get almost 345 or somewhere in that area.
Happy with getting over 300 and although I felt it in my lungs quite a bit similar to last time, I felt better, better in control, better quality of movements and more fit at 40 than I was at 37. Happy big time about that.
