The minute you buy one, rowing workouts will disappear. In all honesty, I bought mine off of Craigslist and it has been amazing. Of course, finding one on Craigslist isn't exactly a row in the park.

Use IFTTT to set up a Craigslist notification. I set up different ones using different key words: Concept, Concept2, rower, crossfit. You have to sort through lots of junk, but they occasionally pop up, and you have to move fast. You generally won't see them below $700. They are high-demand.

Iam waiting patiently for one to show up on Craigslist. Can't bring myself to pay 1200 for a new one. Or should I say, I haven't been able to persuade my wife into letting me spend 1200 more on my garage gym.

Hey guys, not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I'm looking at buying a rower. I found a 1988 concept 2 that is in very good condition...do you think that would be comparable to a newer version? Would there be any reason to not get one that old?

The only difference is in the monitors, the D has everything you'll need.

Devon #14: You might consider a Water Rower. I bought a used one 3 years ago for $350 plus a case of beer, and it has been really great. Water Rowers are attractive and really well made; they row quietly and the company has excellent customer service. I see no difference in the amount of pain and torture they provide compared to a C2! I've read about subtle differences in the "feel" of the strokes, in comparing C2 and Water Rowers, but it shouldn't matter to most people. However, I admit mine doesn't have as cool a monitor as the C2; but I can still do a lot of neat programs with it, like interval training. And to actually address the question you asked, I think the monitor on an old C2 would be very inferior to a newer model. But you may be able to retrofit a newer monitor on an old machine; the company should be a good resource for figuring out if you can and how to do it. It would probably cost you over USD 100 to upgrade, though. My two cents.

Used a water rower because the fitness center at school doesn't have a C2. Time may have been faster on a C2, maybe not. Also took the first 1000 out in a 3:30 so I think I took it out too fast.

Though I'm curious how this would go if I went easier on the C&J (maybe 20) but maxed the row where I think the most reps/cal per time are with over 1km on the row (I was just over 900m today). Alternatively, maybe burpees are the right spot for the main effort. I've done 50 burpees in just over 2' so if I did 10 less C&J, 15 more cal on the row, and lots more burpees . . . . ok, this is getting stupid . . . just take a page from Nike's book.

The Concept 2s last forever, and are readily saleable. Then1988 version should work well if it has not been abused. If you are tight on cash, $200 is a great deal. I gave my brother a 1989 version, snd he promised he would give it back if he didn't want it snymore. The oldcones are still great.
Otherwise, go for it, buy a new one. I did 14,000 meters in about an hour today with a lazy 2500 meter warm up, all at stroke rates of 20-22 per minute. Tomorrow, back to classic CF stuff.

I have an older concept 2 B, works great ($75!!), saved a bunch of cash that went towards other equipment. You can do the monitor upgrade, approx. $150. Very straight forward to do. I have not done the upgrade and still able to do all the workouts with very similar results to newer models. All the parts and manuals available online for maintaining the rower.

After a long day of work in the cold rain and then a flight home last night, my cold/flu symptoms haven't exactly improved. While the head symptoms have gotten better, it seems that my upper chest is screaming now. Either way, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get into the fitness center on a work day while everyone else was working.
