50 super-strict push-ups in one set

Upload video of push-ups to YouTube with your name and "CrossFit Push-up Contest 140221" in title and then post link to comments by 5 p.m. PT Friday. Prizes of $1,000, $750 and $500 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd-place efforts. Technique trumps speed.

1. Low camera perpendicular to athlete's body.
2. No perturbance of midline. No movement in hip, knee or head.
3. Use CFJ The Push-up as reference.

Post row time to comments.

I love these main site WODs lately. The Open is really going to be a test of true fitness this year if the model follows the past couple of weeks of programming.

Super strict push-ups will test a lot of athletes on their strength!

Question for the more experienced rower. I've only begun rowing by following the last few weeks of WODs and have been having hip pain (inner hip/hip flexor). I just watched the tutorial on the concept website and now know that I have many flaws. Question is: what flaw do you think would result in causing such hip pain? I guessing over compressing but am not sure.

Rather hard after doing Special Mary earlier tonight... but I'm traveling tomorrow so had to film today. Also ended up doing this in its entirety 3 times before I filmed it correctly... third time's the charm I guess! haha

@Patrick, it says "post row time to the comments". Push-ups are untimed and as strict as possible and unbroken for as long as possible. For a video entry they must be in an unbroken set.

Pushups: first 30 unbroken, remaining 20 in singles strict from the ground with about 1-2 second pause on the ground.

First time at this distance, still working on pacing, but I don't think I was too far off. Maintained about 2:15-2:20 for the first 4k, then finished off with sub 2:00.

67/Gavin, I also noticed the differences between Rich and Speal's comments. I suspect Rich is saying what he should say, and playing mind games w/ upcoming competitors, while Speal is spreaking his mind.

Regards the video, the the athletes they're expecting in 10ish years sound freakishly fast/strong. Good on them, if they can get there w/o PEDs.

Mascot pushups--during football season, a lot of schools have the mascot do a pushup for each point scored. Something like:

7-14-17-20-27-34-41-48-55-62
at irregular intervals over about 4 hours. Reps as fast as the band can hit the bass drum. Cheating like crazy. Sometimes late in the game, just popping his big mascot head up and down.

Last fall, I tried doing the mascot pushups along with my team every Saturday--also fast, also cheating. I'd generally be ok up to the mid-50's but fail after that. (Our guys scored a lot this season.)

50 super-strict is going to be challenging. But worth doing.

Rich and Speal are both a class act. I think both of them were being straight-up with their comments. Neither needs to embellish anything for anyone. As CrossFit moves along and they hang up their competative side, they will be remembered as the foundation of what made it great and brought it so far. The mental energy needed to continue anything at a high level has to be there, or any man, especially a high level athlete, will succumb to the "other" fitness domain - Drive. That's a hard fall but life will go on. I wish them both the absolute best.

I did the push-up challenge in 1:47. I didn't video it but my goal was to take as long as possible without sacrificing midline stability and minimizing time in the "front leaning rest". I no repped myself on #46 for leading with the nose. Based on the cited document I think the goal would be 3:20 which equates to 50, 4 second push-ups (2 sec up then 2 sec down)

excerpt from the CrossFit Journal describes a strict strictness of form.

"If performing push-ups on the floor we start our athletes from flat on the floor with the nose, chest, pelvis, and thighs – as much of the body as possible – making contact and then begin. The posture on the floor sets the posture for the entire set."

what an awesome challenge. and to think this is step 1 in that progression!

5 sub-1:50/500m pace pulls on C2 rower
225lb deadlifts, 3 reps

4 rounds

I messed around on the rower during my warm up and couldn't get faster than a 1:43/500m pace pull.

50 pushups...40 straight, and last ten were one at a time to make sure I kept my form, but only resting I did was in front leaning rest position. No breaking of the overall pushup format.

Only timed the row: 20:58. Was interrupted twice and had to restart from 500m in and 250 m in the second time.

Rowed 10k on 24 feb. 5k split was 19:55 (pr). Probably due to coming off a rest day as opposed to recovering from special Mary. Also, I started slower on the 10k, just trying to mx better than 2'/500m which helped.

Got 30 great form PU, then fell apart,8,7,5 but 50 in 1.31s...transition to rower, headphones on begin row 5,000 = 22.54 rowing for a total of 24.26.
Rower at YMCA not as good, output was lower.
