How did “Hard Cindy’ treat you? Looks like entry into the Big Dawg Club was 15 rounds as Rx’d after seeing Matt, Austin, Pat and the gang post their results. You guys are new around here and don’t know how cool it used to be when those guys (and Miranda, and Cleverhanz, and Speal and…) posted their stuff every day. Really feels like old times for this old guy. Heck, even my good friend Dale Saran showed up with 10 rounds as Rx’d! I’m gonna get all sentimental and stuff—must have something in my eye (sniff). Good stuff.

Day two in your first full cycle. Remember, this is a boatload of work and it’s perfectly OK if you are really new and really out of shape to work every other day in the beginning. Today we do a couplet, two exercises, Snatch and Row, with a little twist: a ladder up and a ladder down. The WOD is another task-specific workout in which we are given a set amount of work and then asked to complete it as fast as possible. Start your watch. Do 9 snatches then row 2000M then do 15 snatches then row 1000M then do 21 Snatches then row 500M. Stop watch. Fall off rower. Form puddle.

WARNING, WARNING. DANGER WILL ROBINSON. Here’s where you get your first exposure to our weird and sorta wonderful ways. We are going to do an exercise called “The Snatch”, and yes, we are going to plow headlong into every possible snatch_____________________joke we can think of. (Get it?!) Seriously, the Main Page is not always WFS, and you should always pre-screen videos, pics, and the comments so that you are not ambushed if you happen to be viewing in the company of young children, in-laws, or small-town government officials. This constitutes (your only) fair warning.

So, the Snatch. This is the most complex athletic move one can do with a barbell. I contend that there are as many moving parts and as much precision in the Snatch as there are in a golf swing (former 4 hdcp). There are some really good videos up there on the upper left side of the Main Page under “Exercises and Demos”. Search for “Burgener”, then marvel at Sage’s Snatch. Stand with feet shoulder width apart, bar gripped with hands wide apart (near or beyond the line in the knurling). In a single movement lift the weighted bar over your head, completing the movement by standing straight up. One. As Rx’d is 155lbs, a 45# bar with a 45 an a 5 lb. plate on each side.

Riiiiiiight.

If you have never done a snatch before (told ya) you have no business doing a weighted snatch in a WOD. Use a PVC pipe or broomstick, a 15 lb. training bar or empty 35/45# Oly bar. The really strong athletes will do the rounds of 9 and 15 unbroken; if you are not really new but don’t have a nice Snatch choose a weight that allows you to go with only 1 break in rounds 1 and 2.

Rowing in CrossFit means using the Concept 2 Ergometer or rowing machine. Got another rower? Bummer, especially if you need any help or advice. 99.99% of us only know anything about the C2. Sorry. Set the damper (that lever on the right side of the big wheel in front) to 4 and start rowing. In order legs->back->arms/arms->back->legs. First timer on the row? It’s hard! Cut the distances down to 1000, 750, and 500. Honest, the worst I’ve ever felt in a CrossFit WOD was after my first ever 2000M row because I didn’t know how bad it was gonna be. I haven’t been within 0:20 of that time ever again.

All teed up? Snatch up/Row down. 3-2-1…GO.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Howard Jencks at January 3, 2014 5:49 PM

I think the following:

As Rx’d is 155lbs, a 45# bar with a 45 an a 5 lb. plate on each side.

s/b a 45# bar with a 45 and a 10 lb. plate on each side.

Now if I could only snatch 155 lbs...

Comment #3 - Posted by: john at January 3, 2014 5:51 PM

Agreed. Having those elite guys and HQ staff post makes this a special place. I hope some continue after the month is over.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Brett (25/M/188cm/77kg) at January 3, 2014 6:42 PM

I have done sdhp with a 35# kb as a sub for rowing but prefer running (2k = 1 mile) because I feel it better simulates the cardio for the wod's intent. Either works.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Josh at January 3, 2014 6:53 PM

BINGO, the first error/omission of 2014! The sub for rowing if you do not have a rower is 1 Sumo Deadlift High Pull for every 10 M of row. e.g. 500M Row = 50 SDHP with an empty 45# bar. Alternatively you can run. 500 Row = 400M Run. 1000M Row = 800M Run. 200M Row = 1600M or 1 Mile run.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled WOD...

Comment #11 - Posted by: bingo at January 3, 2014 7:28 PM

I assume Power is ok since it doesn't specify on the Snatch?

Comment #12 - Posted by: Chris at January 3, 2014 9:40 PM

I tried to upload my backward roll video on the comments for Jan 1, 2014 but it hasn't showed up yet. I counted comments with video attachments and I am still within the first 500. I'm thinking maybe the comment thread maxes out at 600 comments. Posting it here too.

If I did SDHP's that would be 350 squats or is my math incorrect?

Comment #14 - Posted by: Brent L at January 3, 2014 10:14 PM

Looks like Mainsite is becoming the place to be again!

Bingo is the man! And I have missed the commentary! This should never ever go away because it is helpful for everyone, plus we love to read what you have to say!

And to have the "Big Dawgs" doing the WODs and posting their times (ie Rich F., Speal, Meat Chan, Becca Voigt) is amazing! In what other sport are you going to get to compare your performance to the pros? NONE! That is the answer! Whoever's decision it was to have them start doing mainsite more I applaud! Great Idea!

From Italia!

I guess that 155 pounds snatch in this WOD is out of reach for most non elite Crossfitters, why have the weights increased in recent years? If people get more and more fit, why not add intensity and reps instead?

1st time doing a main page WoD. And did it solo during open gym today (no other takers).

Perfect style of workout--heavy weight for reps with an aerobic kicker.

That being said, I've never snatched 155 LBs before and today was not the day to start.

So, 23:53 @ 125 LBs...I'm pleased with that for now. Just have to do more of these things. Keep 'em coming, especially on Saturdays.

Comment #48 - Posted by: BW at January 4, 2014 8:51 AM

RW,

Just do the workout with 45lb bar if you've got a good snatch with PVC pipe.

Let each workout take out of you ONLY as much as will allow you to function adequately throughout your day and leave you recovered enough psychologically and physically for your next scheduled workout.

Keep the intensity within your physical and psychological tolerance regardless of whether you're 70 or 20 years old.

Welcome to CrossFit RW!

First week as a new CrossFitter complete. Had to move to opposite ends of the gym and to another floor to move from the squat rack to the rower but did it with a jog. 31 mins flat and scaled down the snatches (first time ever doing them so wanted to ensure my form was off to a good start) to 85lbs. 2000 meters in just over 8 mins and tracked my 500 meters in just under 2 mins.

Second CF workout, first post. Can't do snatches because of shoulder mobility issues (previous dislocations, etc). Did dead lift to overhead press instead. Also, haven't done any overhead work in 6 months so went pretty light. No rowing machine so I ran instead and subbed in some seated rows (cable machine) at the end to make up for the lack of rowing.

For Time:
Deadlift to Overhead Press 65 lbs 9 Reps
Ran 1 Mile
Deadlift to Overhead Press 65 lbs 15 Reps
Ran 1/2 Mile
Deadlift to Overhead Press 65 lbs 21 Reps
Ran 1/2 Mile
Seated Rows 105 lbs 34 Reps

Threw in an extra 1/4 mile on the last run to make up for, well.... a lot I guess. Love the CF concept and workouts. Love that every day is a different challenge.

@Cremick - from bingo's post above:

"The sub for rowing if you do not have a rower is 1 Sumo Deadlift High Pull for every 10 M of row. e.g. 500M Row = 50 SDHP with an empty 45# bar. Alternatively you can run. 500 Row = 400M Run. 1000M Row = 800M Run. 200M Row = 1600M or 1 Mile run."

95# power snatches
Used small metal plates and started with the bar below the knees but didn't touch the ground on every rep.

21:53

Cues: knees out, shins back to vertical, contract lats, shove knees under the bar and touch quads for the second pull.

first time doing high reps at 135 and it felt good and I maintained good technique. with plenty of time I only managed 17 reps at 135 in 13.1 last year.

17:00 Scaled snatches to 95lb to hopefully avoid undue strain on the still recovering lower back. Also, these were not full squat snatches, just ground-to-overhead with a slight dip at overhead. They were unbroken until the last round when they were broken 12-9. Felt good doing this movement again. Fun wod, hopefully able to ratchet up the weight next time.
