Comment #2 - Posted by: Nambro at December 29, 2013 5:45 PM

Since it says 'clean and jerk' and not 'power clean and jerk' should I assume a full depth front squat should be included with each rep?

Comment #3 - Posted by: Willy P in the D at December 29, 2013 5:52 PM

@Willy, do whatever you like. It's fitness and you are competing against yourself.

Personally I wouldn't squat. It's for time, as in the moving the most weight as quickly as possible. A squat will slow you down.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Gavin at December 29, 2013 6:01 PM

Same number of reps as the 21-15-9 scheme, just partitioned differently. Interesting look, should be fun.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Mike A. (25/5'9''/164) at December 29, 2013 6:16 PM

Willy (#3), Gavin (#4), and any other newbies:
The definition of "clean" has come up a few times recently in the comments. Coach and the Crossfit staff have made it clear over the years in the FAQ, Forums, Journal, videos, and comments that when the WOD says "clean", the default is a full squat clean. Some people will choose to scale the WOD by doing a power clean, but they won't be attaining the same benefit. The squat clean makes the workout more challenging because it involves a much higher total work output, and greater coordination, as well as quickness, compared with a power clean. 45 power cleans for time (in addition to the other movements) would be a completely different (and much easier) workout than 45 cleans for time. If Pukie wanted us to just get 135# from ground to overhead as quickly as possible, then he would have written "ground to overhead", which we've seen a couple times in the past year.
If you do power cleans, make sure you note it, so that next time this comes up you'll know what you did for appropriate comparison.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Mike McG at December 29, 2013 7:10 PM

Willy (#3): Original comment filtered. Coach and staff have said many times that "clean" always indicates a full squat clean unless otherwise instructed.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Mike McG at December 29, 2013 7:12 PM

Quick question, for workouts with higher reps like this one if you can only do lets say 4 clean and jerks at 135lbs in a row do you still use 135 or modify down a little?

I just want to thank the coaches and owners of Crossfit 299 in New Paltz NY. I did a drop in all week as I was visiting family. Being from Delaware and not knowing anyone they were very welcoming. The programming was top notch and the coaches had a lot to offer. Visit this box if your in the area. Its very well recommended.

Comment #28 - Posted by: Steven T. at December 30, 2013 7:48 AM

Re power clean and squat clean: When the WOD description only states clean, it always means a full squat clean. A power clean is a different, easier exercise than what is Rxed, so it is considered scaling, and should be noted as such. It has been this way for the past 9 years, and has been noted many times in the past.

Don't squat clean!

Comment #33 - Posted by: M at December 30, 2013 8:40 AM

@Steve M, I'm with you but wanted to see what the community thinks. If you look up a Grace for example it states 'clean and jerk 135 lbs' but then hop over to youtube and watch Rich, Dan, or anyone do Grace in competition with judges and they are power cleaning. The official FAQ clearly agrees with you but the crossfit judges don't. The real bummer is I have been cheating my Grace by doing it like the pros and not as RXd.

Mike Andridge - I know the feeling! You could add on 45 jerks for time haha

Glorybelle - C&J was surprisingly difficult for me as well this morning

Comment #41 - Posted by: Joe Northside m/35/70"/200 at December 30, 2013 9:35 AM

Regarding squat vs. power cleans in a WOD:
IMO, Gavin has it right. The sport of CrossFit has evolved in many ways over the years, so it's possible that this is a new standard. However, to paraphrase Coach Burgener, a squat clean is just a missed power clean.

Clean = you are allowed to squat below parallel to catch the weight
Power Clean = you are NOT allowed to squat below parallel to catch the weight

When the WOD asks you , use power cleans and MOVE WEIGHT FAST!

Comment #88 - Posted by: Grady at December 30, 2013 2:28 PM

Come on guys, a clean is a clean. A squat clean is simply a failed power clean. A squat clean is done out of necessity. Heck, if you don't need to power clean it then muscle clean it.

Doing a squat clean when the weight doesn't dictate that you need to (ie you can pull the bar high enough to get under it without squatting below parallel) is ridiculous in a WOD that is for time.

Gavin, it shouldn't matter if one chooses a squat clean versus a power clean. You said it yourself! You are competing only against yourself, remember? :)

Comment #94 - Posted by: Glorybelle (F/44/5'5/135) at December 30, 2013 2:50 PM

@Glorybelle, agree completely. Just trying to clear up the rumor that when it says "clean" it means squat clean.

Castro wrote a nice piece in the CF Journal in June 2010 (http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/CFJ_Castro_SnatchStrategies.pdf) regarding strategies for snatching in high-rep workouts. Certainly strategies for cleaning are no different. Squat clean moves weight, muscle clean is high rep, power is when the muscle clean gets tiring.

CFFB today
Strength: back squat 3x5 @205#. Shoulder press @ 122# failed after 2 reps.
DWOD: 2RM seated box jump was 32". 150 double unders in 4:40 (but 100 in 2:47 which is a PR by 31 seconds).

Then 3 rounds of 15 KB swings 2 pood and 10 box jumps 30".

Broke up C&J in 5/5/5, 6/6, 5/4, 6, and 3. Push ups were tough since I could barely breathe haha. Loved it. Round splits - 2:30, 2:37, 1:57, 1:25, 0:36. #kinnickbutternation
