Just wanted to say thanks to Crossfit hq for using my picture. My dad (on the homemade ghd machine) was working midnight last night and I gave him a call around 9:30. Told him to check the mainsite for the workout and to keep me on the line. He started laughing so hard... it was awesome. He has been a police officer for over 25 years and when I can get back home it is great to be able to get a workout in with the old man!
Thanks again Crossfit,

Sunday musings…

1) Upsets. And THAT folks is why we strap 'em on and play the games.

2) Messy. Life, that is. No insight here I'm afraid, or pithy advice. Just a reminder.

Sometimes that over-easy egg ends up over-hard, if it doesn't end up on the floor first.

3) Flag. U.S. flags were ordered to half-mast to honor the memory of Nelson Mandela. This marks the 3rd time in the history of the United States that a foreign leader was so honored. George W. Bush honored Pope John Paul II in 2005, and Lyndon Johnson did the same for Winston Churchill in 1965.

Were the lives and achievements of Mandela and Pope John Paul II as significant in the development of our world today as Churchill's? Our Flag Bearers famously decline to dip Old Glory as they pass heads of state in the Olympic procession; should we or should we not apply the same standard as we daily raise our flags on sovereign soil?

4) Objective. I am about to enter into a conflict. My family has been wronged financially. It is a rather small sum, but the manner in which we have been wronged is personal, was preventable, and is undoubtedly known to the perpetrator. Thus, I willingly, and with eyes wide open, will do battle.

The question is "how?"

Strategy cannot avoid acknowledging the personal, for strategy must by definition be constructed to produce the result that you, or your side, desires. Tactics, on the other hand, can be directed at a nameless, faceless foe. This is at the same time a moral approach, but it also opens one up to moral hazard: effective tactics may produce more destruction than is strictly necessary to achieve victory.

This is difficult because of the personal nature of the transgression. The people involved took advantage of a relationship with our family and rather than protecting us knowingly caused harm. I am angry, and anger blurs the line between strategy and tactics.

I see their faces; I know their names.

5) Indulgence. 'Tis the season, eh? Indulgence at this time of year, at least in the Judeo-Christian world, is rather obvious. I WAM my nutrition all year so that I can eat pie at Thanksgiving and cookies at Christmas. Neither of which I weigh or measure, by the way.

There's an aspect of guilt when it comes to indulgence. It's more than just the occasional treat. An inch of dark chocolate on your Paleo Diet doesn't really cut it, and if you consider that an indulgence it's probably time to loosen up a bit. I was thinking that the ultimate First World indulgence is the un-timed hot shower, but anything that occurs on a daily basis probably doesn't count either.

Uh uh…indulgence involves a certain sense of not only excess but also a bit of "I really shouldn't". Jay McInerney: "I find the shadow of guilt always adds piquancy to any indulgence. It's almost more pleasurable, feeling slightly guilty." As a boy raised Catholic by a mother who openly admired the way her Jewish friends raised their kids (producing what I've come to call "double guilt"), I definitely get the "shadow of guilt" angle to indulgence, especially with ones that only occur on rare occasions.

Others, though, indulge in ways both frequent and grand. Indulgence writ large, if you will. Take, for example, Lilly Bollinger and her approach to Champagne: "I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it--unless I'm thirsty." Man, THAT woman knows how to indulge. Not much guilt evident, either. I'm sure my Mom wouldn't approve, and I'm equally sure that Lilly wouldn't care.

In a perfect world we would all be more like Lilly Bollinger, indulging on a daily basis in something that brings us pleasure with or without a side of guilt. The world, as I've said, is messy, no matter where it is you might live. Indulgence is what you make of it, and it's probably a good thing that we have this Holiday Season during which we give ourselves permission to indulge a bit. Life is messy and CrossFit is hard--you've earned it.

[Raises flute]

I'll see you next week...

Just started crossfit as part of my exercise routine to drop weight. I was only able to do 2 rounds at the prescribed weight. It is turning out that the cardio aspect of crossfit my body is not prepared for. Next time I will use 70-80% of the allotted weight and try to get more rounds in before my heart bursts out of my chest.

CFWU-3. Reg 1st 2.
10+5 thrusters
HPC not bad at all. Thrusters unbr. Decent job staying on heels. SDHP toughest. Mostly 6+4. Used small 25lb weights so took a little rhythm away.
6/25/09: 6 rounds + 5 thruster & 5 HPC.
Terrible!
Need to suck it up & go on this WOD.
12/27: 8 rounds
10/20: 8 rounds + 5 thrusters.
