989 posts the last time this came up. Check it out for a laugh. Oh, and some guy posted a couple of hints about the WOD. You know, in case you were wondering...

Comment #1 - Posted by: bingo at October 22, 2013 5:53 PM

bingo, I hadn't realized the row/pushup WOD was so popular. But I feel more enlightened and motivated now.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Jim R./51/5'8"/160 at October 22, 2013 6:01 PM

Those comments from 2011 are downright hilarious. I think I'll read them instead of doing the WOD.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Gavin at October 22, 2013 6:02 PM

@Jim, check out the photo last time. THAT is popular. LOL.

Comment #7 - Posted by: James at October 22, 2013 6:33 PM

Please don't post garbage like that article again. The dudes a criminal. The guy hasn't even been released and you're blowing smoke up his a***. Wait 5 years after he's been out. If he's still out and ACTUALLY makes a difference in someone else's life, then tell me about it. Shame on you Crossfit.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Dmoney at October 22, 2013 6:54 PM

What would be a good substitute for the 200meter rows?

Comment #9 - Posted by: Jeremy at October 22, 2013 7:05 PM

jeremy,

i've heard/read that a sub for rows is a 45 lb sumo deadlift high pull and that each rep is a meter so 200 reps. seems logical. i guess the main diff being legs spread wide and close grip on bar vs a rower. but, if your like me i don't own or have 24hr access to such things. and my local cross fit gym charges about $150 a month to workout there.

@Jeremy #9:

You have 3 options. The first is to simply run or bike for an equivalent amount of time as the rowing you are replacing. Rowing 250m will take us 1 minute at a calm pace. The second option would be to run for the same distance, or 250m. The third option is what Gary mentioned, sumo deadlift high pulls. The rule of thumb is 10% of the rowing distance for reps, so 250m row = 25 SDHP reps.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Gavin at October 22, 2013 10:20 PM

All the good that all the boxes are doing out in the community and this article is "news" worthy. Sh*tHead Got caught running dope and now has all the time to better himself at the cost of all the business taxes I have to pay as a small business owner. SMH! WOW let's not focus on things like Barbell4Boobs, Hope or the countless other things affiliates are doing to better their members. Please tell me more about this MOPE who is doing amazing things behind bars. Let's glamorize the criminal element more then Hollywood and the Music industry already does.

Comment #31 - Posted by: D.S. at October 23, 2013 5:39 AM

@gavin-
yes, what you said makes MUCH more sense on the SDLHP.
i'm guessing it would take a good while to get in 250 reps on sdlhp ,haha. and I guess it def doesn't take 250 "reps" on a rower to get to 250m. & it would be insane and very unlikely to do over 20,000 reps for "rowing" on that WOD where you row like 21,400 and something meters. duh on my part..! thank you for the "clarity" :)

I agree with the above comments about "journey Behind Bars". I wasted 5 minutes of my life reading that BS. He is a criminal!! He is guilty of a crime and sitting in prison! He is not worthy of an article on a fitness website. So, he does basic exercises to entertain himself in jail and says he is CrossFitting. If this is what CrossFit is endorsing, then I don't want any part of CrossFit. Where are the morals, CrossFit HQ?

Ms. Beers,
You are a fine author and talented athlete, your piece on Haiti was inspiring and you have my admiration for traveling there BUT " journey behind bars" is INSULTING! This individual is a convicted drug dealer, not once but twice he chose the wrong path. Thirty months is a gift not a sentence for 45 lbs of coke. With all the Police, Military and fire personnel on this website I think HQ could have provided us with a better piece to read than this. I believe in free speech and liberal thought but the attempt to glorify someone who chose this path is not acceptable. As far as his jail workout, who cares, he has nothing else better to do and is fed three squares and a cot, no worries any longer about money...we pay for him! P.S. 52/6'4'/255 male, retired NYPD, so maybe my opinions are a bit jaded, I may have spent too long dealing with the underside of society. But I still believe in right and wrong and the power of the American people. Please do not forget all of those who have served and gone before us...both here and abroad.

Totally disagree with some of you regarding this article. Whats wrong with getting a story out regarding mistakes and hardships and how we learn from those mistakes and hardships? And how Crossfit has maybe changed our lives for the better and given us comfort and a sense of well being during these difficult times. I for one was going down a path just like Karl was (Drugs, etc..) and luckily I turned out ok and now contribute to society by serving my country for the past twelve years in the United States Marine Corps and raising a beautiful family. I can tell you Crossfit got me through some rough times on deployment to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Hopefully he does turn his life around and if Crossfit is his medication than so be it. People make decisions every day. Some good, some bad. Karl knows what he did and he knows it is wrong and he is serving his time.I find it comforting that a man in solitary confinement can find solace in bodyweight exercises! good on him! I am by no means defending this man's actions to run drugs. Completely wrong, I got it. But what if, just what if Crossfit has given him new direction in life? I call that a win. Now its up to Karl when he gets out how he wants to live the rest of his life.

I am a mother of 4 / grandparent of 5 and yes I do Crossfit AND read the articles. I think Emily's story about Haiti was wonderful and so was the prisoner story. Pretty diverse. The thing is, she did not glorify prison life or ask for us to forgive him or the system. He made a big mistake that hurt alot of people. If Crossfit exercises helps in anyway, I think it's a good thing. Saving one person may help many more. Recidivism is high amongst those in the system - maybe he will get a second chance. What's the harm in hoping for him and his family - could be anyone of us our ours making a awful mistake. I'm ok forgiving him and hope he makes it. Thanks Emily and HQ.

#78/MajorDad, thanks! It's great that the site has a strong group near, in, and past their 50s, kicking arse every day.

It might not be a good motto for a Marine, but I'm an Airman so...Aim High!

Kevin C., thanks--you tweak something on the snatch WOD? The rower can stress the back, so it was good to go easier today.

first day back for a while. The great news is that at age 56 I played in a live full pads full contact football game 2 weeks ago. Doing the WOD's was my training along with some live contact practice and some extra speed work
( 40's) I have a rebuilt ACL. My orthopedic surgeon loves it ! No brace no worries. On the 10th play I completly dislocated my thumb. Never done that before- so I put it back in, got it taped up, and played the whole game. I had more juice than most guys and I am old enuff to be their dad. I am rehabbing the thumb but needless to say workouts that require a grip are not happening. I could do this one today
AS Rx- 6 rounds plus 150 M row. All pushups unbroken.

Even though I do not do CrossFit nearly as much as I used to I always find a way to throw a rowing/push up "WOD" into my normal programming. These are the types of workouts which led me to enjoy CrossFit style workouts back in 2006.

Not sure where the vitriol for this article is coming from. Ya he made some serious mistakes but this article in no way condones them. He's suffering the consequences for the choices he made and from the sounds of it is trying to make amends. Whatever happened to forgiveness? Second chances? Reformation? If crossfit can help him gain some self respect and self control in his life then great. And isn't that what this is all about? Helping people become better than they presently are? Supporting those who are in need of support? Isn't that the point of all the work going into Hope, Kenya, Haiti, Prescott and everything else? Some people have adversity dumped on them, others pile it on themselves. But regardless of how someone got down in the dumps there is value in lifting them out. Are these not worthy morals to adhere to? If this is what crossfit is endorsing then I'm all in.

Fun WOD, got just a bit further than last time. It was an all-out sprint to get the last row in - I was in the 1:35-1:40 pace for most of it. Other rows stayed in the 1:40-1:50 range. Push-ups broken starting in round 2. Colin joined me today and subbed runs back-and-forth across the gym for rowing and burpees for push-ups. As my push-ups slowed, he kept getting a higher count on burpees - he was pretty excited about this.

Better than last time when I was at 5 rounds + 200M in to the row at that time.

Pushups were broken the same, but I think the rows made a difference. I tried to keep the rows at or under 1:50 per 500M - did that on all but a couple of rounds when they were still sub-2.

Don't know that I got all 250m. Didn't hear watch beep. Timer at 0 & had stopped beeping when I got off rower.
Row not bad. Damper on 4. Seemed much easier & more drive from heels w/pushing knees out & making a point to engage hip adductors.
