You know this is a good workout when you remember doing it in the past. Found my post in 2010 before I gave up for awhile... Would you look at that, I even posted times! I just might time myself on this one...

I will be doing this workout at home and I only have dumbells. What is a comparable weight when using dumbells?

Comment #5 - Posted by: Jacqui at October 2, 2013 7:04 PM

Comment #6 - Posted by: Spence at October 2, 2013 7:40 PM

@Glenn Edwards

if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't be doing RX weight imho. I'd try picking a weight that you can get through a set unbroken and not need more than 20 seconds rest between rounds. That would be a reasonable starting point

Comment #7 - Posted by: Jon Gray at October 2, 2013 7:52 PM

@John, Thanks for the input. I do most of my workouts at home or in the gym. I can't monopolize the barbell in 24 hour fitness, they would run me out of there. Because of this, when possible, I will substitute dumbbells when possible. I've heard several different formulas for figuring out dumbbell equivalent and was interested in others opinions. The most consistent conversion that i've read is that when using dumbbells, use the amount of weight that is on one side of the bar, give or take 10 pounds. For example, for this workout, an equivalent would be 55 pound dumbbells. I'm interested in others thoughts. Am I the only one doing Crossfit on a budget??

Comment #8 - Posted by: Glenn Edwards at October 2, 2013 8:26 PM

Glen I too work on budget and like info on scale and equivalent work with limited gear. Thankz

Comment #9 - Posted by: moses at October 2, 2013 8:34 PM

For the DB sub I've always gone with 75% of the barbell weight so in this case that would be approx 116 pounds, which I'd round down to 110 so it would be 2 55 pound DBs. That's a different method but similar weight to Glenn's approach.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Hendo at October 2, 2013 9:55 PM

I got ran out of 24 a long time ago. Now I go to a gym where they are happy when I put in work. If you are afraid of your gym, maybe you should go somewhere else. I did, I love it, and I only pay 19 a month.

Hi all, recently I switched to crossfit. I feel like it is more intensive, however my main goal is to gain muscle mass. I have always been in great shape due to athletics (wrestling, and running) and am looking to add bulk. I weigh 165 and stand at 6'0. Will crossfit help me add lbs or should I switch back to a bulking program?

Joe as long as your diet is good and set for "bulking" crossfit will put on the size that your body can handle. Keep in mind that it is not designed to get you to the competitive weight lifter look, but you will be athletic looking (which is better IMO.

@ Joe, what Steve said. In the 14 months I've been training I went from 165 to 188 at 6'1. Still at ~11 % body fat, only minor changes to my diet. Seeing similar changes in the guys I train with. Before I started CF, I mostly ran and climbed.

@Glenn Edwards

That is a flawed formula for a number of reasons, I won't bore you with the details. When trying to pick a weight for any WOD I like to consider 2 things.

1. What is the physiologic response and metabolic pathway that this WOD was designed to target. Pick a weight that gives you roughly the same finishing time as a top athlete. Glassman explains all this stuff in the descriptions of the old WODS. (2001-2004ish)

2. How could I get injured and how should I avoid that.

I've been doing this stuff since 2005. I've seen a few things both good and bad.

I started out with the 155dl, which was nice and light, but a few cleans in I realized I would not finish this workout before lunch, so I scaled. Switched out to 135, finished first two rounds, then switched to 115. Feeling pretty pathetic and weak. Technique needs works. Looking forward to doing this RX'd in the future. To the 8 and 9 doing it on a budget.... be persistent And creative....I built or found at flea markets and garage sales everything I use....I can do anything the HQ asks of me and I've spent.....three hundred bucks? Maybe four. Found a broken fence and four by four s in the trash for a pull up bar, made my kettle bells and gymnast rings from ovc, concrete, ratchet straps, and a dollar basketball....med balls from a b-ball, sand, and tire plugs... just scour YouTube and be patient. You can do it

@D.S. thanks for checking in on Monday. I've been thinking about everyone here too. All is well, I just took most of the week off from all workouts. Did a little today though with an easy 4 mile run and a non-timed 45# Fran. I'll get back into the routine next week. Hope you're well!

12:45 (scaled weight to 125 pounds). Wanted to do 155, but wouldn't have been able to keep it in the 8-15 minute range that everybody is getting. Wanted the proper stimulus. Tried a round at 135 and knew I had to go lower still. Next time 135.

Strength: floor press 3x5 @ 147 pounds.

@Franiel #91, men will do great things in the pursuit of points or a better time. You need to time yourself. What you (and #87 John) also need to do is scale the workout so the time is competitive with what is being posted. Taking 25 minutes to do a 10-15 minute workout is missing the desired stimulus.

You'll note there are VERY few people who have posted Rx with this workout. Many have done 95#. Many have done lower. CrossFIt will get us world-class fitness for our age groups if we scale appropriately.

Jon Gray (#7, #45, #100) and Gavin (#108, #110) both recommend a very inefficient approach (scale the weights in an attempt to achieve the same time as the top athletes). A couple of my buddies tried that method and made very little progress. I have always used the prescribed weight for every WOD, unless it was too heavy to lift at all. My initial times ranged from 30-90 minutes, while my buddies were finishing the same WODs in 10-20 minutes. However, I made huge improvements. For example, DT (29:08 in 2010, 9:41 today, Rx'ed weight every time). So those of you who are discouraged or frustrated (I definitely was 3 years ago), record your times, be persistent, and you'll get a LOT better.

#87/John and 91/Franiel, I definitely recommend timing. But you're timing for two reasons--to push yourself today, and as a benchmark for the future. Its not to compare to anyone else on the discussion board.

Regards #117/Mike M, he might be right, but its contrary to what CF has advocated for as long as I've followed it. CF isn't all about the weight--its about fitness and the 10 fitness components Coach and the CF trainers constantly talk about.

As rx'd, not timed, garage.

3 rds as rx'd in ~9' flat, then tweaked rt calf that I've been nursing. In PAC (no bumpers).

@John #233. Not bad for an old geezer!

115 was all I could do for the cleans and jerks.
If I did the RX I would have been in that gym all day, ( And I'm not sure I could even do 1 clean at 155.)

14:08 as Rx'd (PR down from 17:57). 155 is just a little too heavy for me to move quickly. I feel like I'd slash a ton of time by doing it at 145.

Two minutes for the first round, attempted three minutes for each round after but got a little worn out. The cleans were brutal (did weighted pull-ups first, so made the grip more difficult)!
