This WOD is pretty awesome.

I love hero WODs and I love honoring heros, but this needs to be scaled down so no one gets hurt.

C'mon people, suck it up and no whining. Just a Filthy 50 plus 160 reps.

Comment #8 - Posted by: GerryZ at September 10, 2013 5:29 PM

For those that are unaware of a great scaled option, go to the 'start here' button and then click on 'Brand X scaled'.

It can take up to a hour after the wod is posted each day for the scaled version but it is always great advice for the commoner like myself.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Jb at September 10, 2013 5:32 PM

Im gonna ask for advice on this one.
Do you think we should scale this to something like a filthy fifty?
Or should we just do it the way its posted?
Thanks

Comment #10 - Posted by: spence at September 10, 2013 5:33 PM

Try it the way it is posted and when it becomes over bearing just remember why it is posted.. this hero consciously made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom we can bleed a little bit from our palms to honor him
RIP sir and thank you for your bravery

Comment #11 - Posted by: CJ at September 10, 2013 5:58 PM

Why scale? What here can injure anyone? Everything is light weight. Just a lot of it. The only thing injured will be egos. Honor this American Hero properly.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Brad at September 10, 2013 6:01 PM

Corporal is abbreviated as Cpl, not MC. I'm sorry that some people on here might worry about injuring themselves. Cpl Marler doesn't have the luxury to worry about injury. Think on that next time you wine about too many reps. Suck it up and push through the pain. If you have good form, you won't get injured. Injury is caused when weak people sacrifice form for pain.

Suck it up--no one was able to scale anything for this hero. He deserves to be honored--so does every one of our fallen.

This will be my first ever Hero WOD and I can't wait to thank Cpl Marler for his service. OORAH brother. Your family will be in my prayers during the duration of this WOD.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Brada2z at September 10, 2013 6:31 PM

Doing this Rx'd in the morning.
Then climbing 110 flights of stairs in the afternoon.

It's the least I can do to pay tribute to those that have sacrificed.

Thank you to all that have served, are serving and have yet to serve. and RIP soldier!

Comment #22 - Posted by: Bryant at September 10, 2013 6:34 PM

What's the reason for 66 reps of each?
Day of his death? June 6th?

Also, can this be broken up into 3 rounds of 22? or is it straight thru??

Comment #23 - Posted by: Bret Kaiser at September 10, 2013 6:45 PM

I'm afraid hero worship will lead to a few injuries on this one. Be cautious guys, listen to your bodies

Comment #24 - Posted by: Bruce Lee at September 10, 2013 6:53 PM

This WOD is absurd. I'll be doing something that actually benefits my body.

The exercises chosen are manageable at those reps. Break up you reps. No one can get injured from this unless bad technique has something to do with it.

Comment #32 - Posted by: Amir at September 10, 2013 9:36 PM

@Amir, you are right, manageable. Injury has to do only with wrong technique, which usually is caused by fatigue. This workout is definitely fatigue exploder. Although everything is pretty light weight etc.

Can't wait to do it, even though I am trying to put on weight and those 66 burpees don't really fit my plan. Anyone has any idea how can I make it a power exercise? What's a good swap?

Comment #33 - Posted by: Fil at September 10, 2013 10:14 PM

Doing it as RXd, plus a mile run at end - the least I can do for a fallen soldier! Shooting for an hour :)

Wow, this looks insane. I'm excited about trying this, but I work out in the park and don't have a bar. What would be a good exercise to sub for a deadlift and thuster? I've got a med ball, and I've got a sandbag I could potentially get it to the park (but I'd have to use it for either the deadlifts (at 40kg) or the thrusters (at 20kg?). Any suggetions for alternative exercises appreciated.

Does anyone know who designs and posts the daily WOD's at crossfit.com? I tried googling but I couldn't find it. I will dig around some more. On another note- I'm planning to get back into this after a break where I focused on Starting Strengh. This WOD looks deadly but also exemplifies why I love Crossfit.

Comment #50 - Posted by: mk29 at September 11, 2013 5:20 AM

I am all for honoring heros, and I am thankful that crossfit does that, but how is giving others a hard time for not having the capcity for the rx'd wod honoring anyone but yourself? Does saying 'this ones for you' , or ' if you don't suffer as much as i do you need to suck it up' really benefit anyone?

If you want to remember a hero and say thankyou, how about do something that will benefit someone besides yourself. Give blood, donate money to wounded worriors or some other charity, help a little old lady cross the street. Do somethig to help someone else...then go do a tough wod with a bit of humility.

First off thanks for your service.
Second all workouts posted on this site can be scaled. So if this is beyond your current fitness level then scale, if not well its going to be hard. However not as hard as the sacrifice of this soldier, or as hard as the loss his family and friends deal with. So on today stop whining and arguing and debating programming just suck it up and get to work.

Scale, sub, whatever. Just do some work, make it suck, and give some thought to Cpl. Marler and his family (and his girlfriend, Joelle), as well as the victims and first responders of 9/11. This WOD is over-the-top, and rightfully so.

During Ranger Indoctrination Phase (affectionately known as RIP in those days) the instructors ran us to the Ranger Memorial and dropped us to the ground. One said “look at all the names on these bricks, they paid the ultimate price, so leave em’ some sweat.” On 9/11, 72 Law Enforcement Officers lost their lives in the line of duty. Today I’m gonna leave them some sweat! I devised this little pain festival last night:
“72 Down”
72 Burpees
720 Sledge Hammer Strikes
7200 Meter Row
Time to complete- 1:30:46

I knew this was going to be a long workout. I think its an easy workout to burnout on if you come out to strong. Overall I think its a great full body workout that satisfies complete crossfitters who are not only enduranced but are able to refrain from "checking out" during the workout. My time is only approximate with some modifications with a 20" box, 132 single unders at ~43.00

Question, does HQ do any hero WOD's concerning FF's on 11 September? Even if they mentioned over 30 FF's a year, it would take over a decade. Seems only fitting IMO. Perhaps I am not understanding the methodology, but it would also seem fitting to do the hero WOD's on the date the particular hero made that ultimate sacrifice. Myself, I will be scaling this workout a bit, then climbing our 5-story drill tower 28 times.

Sub hand release push ups for the wall balls, we don't have those on this ship. Did 180 single unders because my double unders suck, I'm working on it. I'm still a noob. Other than that, as RX'd.

None of the Marines I know died whining about scaling their sacrifice. Awesome workout.I started out with a sore and stiff left shoulder and completed the workout in 1:30.8. I substituted chin ups for pullups because I found it took some stress off my shoulder and put it on my biceps instead.I also do the burpies on my knuckles.Bad left wrist.I really really enjoyed this workout which was done outside whilst it was drizzling and my dogs were playing around me having a workout of there own. And my shoulder felt better afterwards.

9-11-01….The significance of that date most likely means a bit more to some of us than others. As I am writing this I have thought about the fact that the age of our membership varies so much that some of us were in high school or younger while others of us were a bit more advanced in our age.

I remember the day like it was yesterday. I can recall where I was and what was going on in my life the moment I heard the news that our country was under attack. The surge of emotions that coursed through me is something that cannot be easily described.

My twins were just over a year old. The way of life in this country was not just good, it was great. I was working when my wife called me to ask if I had heard what was happening. She filled me in and I immediately tuned the car radio to a news channel and listened.

You may or may not know that I am an army veteran. Unlike Woody who fought this fight, I was in and out of the Service prior to this attack on our country. The day after 9-11, I called a recruiter who said he could have me back in and ready to go within 90 days. I was more than ready to go but was reminded by family that I had served my time.

Despite the fact that thousands of my brothers in arms have paid the ultimate price in the pursuit of vengeance for the cowardice act that the enemy hit us with, we would all be remiss if we forgot the sacrifices made by the first responders that gave their lives to rescue the scared and injured people that were trapped in the towers all those years ago.

Time, since 9-11, has flown by and with people’s busy lives I think it is easy to allow the magnitude of this tragedy to fade. To me, it is criminal to forget the sacrifices made on that day as police and fire personnel gave their lives to help others.

Disregarding your own personal safety and well being to help someone in need is a sacrifice that few of us will ever have to make and many cannot comprehend. Take a moment and give a nod to those that do. Never forget those that have.

After a 10 minute warm up you may have 50 minutes worth of work to do. During those 50 minutes remember that your temporary suffering is to honor those that sacrificed their lives so that others may live.

A big part of CrossFit is honoring our fallen heroes. Today is no different. This is not a WOD named for a fallen soldier who died on foreign soil. It is for the heroes that perished right here at home.

Alaska Mommies Into Lifetime Fitness
5xF Ages 33-40:

Scaled deadlifts to 90#
Scaled box jumps to a park bench
Scaled kettlebell swings to 40#
Scaled thrusters to 40#
Scaled wall balls to 15#
Subbed 2:1 single-unders for double-unders
Some assisted pullups depending on need.
Did knees to elbows on playground rings (they're easier this way)

Took us about 1.5 hours, but most of us came into it whipped (3/5 ran 5 miles just beforehand).

We all agreed it was a hard workout! RIP Don.

This Marine is my fiance's family (cousin I believe)--all Marlers. I had no idea until AFTER I completed the WOD and realized he was from MO and closely looked at the name. The military life runs in the family.

I did this WOD in honor of ALL who have sacrificed so much--on 9/11, before 9/11 and after. I didn't realize that it actually hit close to home. It felt like a complete personal triumph and now I know why. Oorah MC Marler!

Agree with above commentators who express sentiment that these WODs are supposed to be beyond typical crossfit workouts. Do your best and at the worst of the movements think about the person who the WOD is named after. Then continue to work. Or dont do the WOD!!!

I was unable to complete this WOD on 9/11 and our local BOX did not have it on the schedule. So, I went in on Saturday during our wreck shop and I scaled only two .. the box jump to 20" and the wall ball to 14 lbs. I likely could have completed the entire workout RX but I underestimated myself.

It took me a while regardless. F/42/160lb Time: 64 minutes and 13 seconds.
