Comment #7 - Posted by: Sean at July 18, 2013 8:30 PM

Towel pull-ups are an awesome exercise, but they are so much more difficult than climbing a rope. Watch the Carl Paoli videos in the Journal area about efficiency in climbing a rope. That hip movement changed everything for me. It involves no pulling with the arms at all, it's all reaching with the legs and then opening the hips. So in that regard, towel pull-ups are much more difficult than rope climbs. Plus, it only takes 3 movements to get to the top of a 15 foot rope.

Time for HQ to update their sub list :)

Comment #8 - Posted by: Gavin at July 18, 2013 8:34 PM

Are the rope climbs intended to be with or without the feet?

Comment #9 - Posted by: Sean at July 18, 2013 9:11 PM

Look up "CrossFit games rope climb clean and jerk" on the internet and watch the videos from the 2011 games. They show how to do this WOD. Going to be a good one.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Carlos Tovar at July 18, 2013 9:26 PM

Quoting what I thought was excellent advice from Harry on April 30th 2013 130430:

"A lot of ppl will say that the sub for rope climb is towel pullups. They are a good sub but do not constitute a true sub IMO.

"I prefer 5 Knees To Elbows, 5 squats and 5 regular pullups, in that order. I think those most closely mimic the motion one goes through when doing rope climbs."

I think Harry has a better sub than HQ on this one.

But why not 5 towel Knees to Elbows, 5 squats, and 5 towel pullups?? Towel Ks-Es sounds distinctly dangerous though... : )

Comment #12 - Posted by: Jay at July 18, 2013 9:51 PM

i agree with the sub movement but think 5 reps for each movement (knees-to-elbow, squats, pull ups) is excessive. i would do 3 each for a 15ft rope.
And close grip on a straight bar is more like a rope. As you raise your legs and push out on the rope, your grip tends to turn into the horizontal plain slightly.

This is from experience of claimbing 35ft ropes with boots and greens on....oh and 33lb of kit on back.

But i guess 5's for each will hurt more! and we love pain :)

Comment #13 - Posted by: Adam at July 19, 2013 12:19 AM

sub tree climb or 50 burpees

Comment #14 - Posted by: woolymammoth at July 19, 2013 12:40 AM

I was able to learn rope climbing at a local affiliate on vacation. It seemed like the moves on the rope were: pull-up (similar to towel pull-up), knees to elbow, air squat, repeat. Probably do this progression 5 times to simulate a 15 foot rope. I think that is a better more realistic sub for rope climb.

Question. Say I can do 1 rep of clean and jerks at 145 but I can do 5 reps @ 125.

Is it better to use 145 and take time in between reps or use 125 so I can switch quickly between exercises?

About 15 min:
5x95# c&j

5x105 c&j
3 rounds of 5 squat/5 kte/5 pu
5x115 c&j

@tom - 145 is about 40% of Froning's max C&J, so you should be able to knock out 5 quick reps as well. Try starting at about 40-50% of your 1RM (60-75#) and working up to about 60-70% of your 1RM (85-100#)

@D.S. - what kind of pull-up program are you doing?

@Bill M - thanks!

@Jim R - don't know if it'll a difference, but I use a beach towel (thinner material than a bath towel)

sub'd the rope climb with the K2E-squat-pullup combo that I saw posted here. I have usually just done pullups and squats but adding the K2E let me jump right into the next set by not dropping from the bar.

I suck at cleans so I started with 115 then 135,155,185,185.

the jerk is no problem but I just cant seem to get over the hump on cleaning a heavier weight. I also don't have small plates so my increases are probably too much.

Had a bad storm looming and the thought of doing pullups in the rain seemed difficult so I was able to finish in 13:23 with drops falling on the last pullup :)

Kevin, thanks for the vector. You have a 12' ceiling...my barn's is ~25'!

When I used to wrestle in high school, the stronger guys did rope climbs w/ no legs. Never seen that in a CF WOD demo, but I'm sure gymnasts that hold L-seat iron crosses can climb ropes in a flash.

Towel pull ups seem to be a popular sub. Whenever I've found myself without a rope, I've always stuck to the rx'd sub on the substitutions page and "seesaw" the towel over the bar. Each pull is equal to one foot on a rope (15' rope climb=15 towel seesaw's).

WOD:
Rope as rx'd
C&J's:
105
125
145
165
185(F) Spent some time going back down to 175 but couldn't jerk it, so I went down to 165 again just to complete the lift.

26:43 scaled

Set of 5 pull-ups, 5 knees to elbows for every rope climb. Started at 105 and increased by 20 every round. Should have started at 125 instead though. Ending at 185 was way too light. Just being overly cautious.

Made up WOD on 130726-Friday
Scaled & subbed as follows:
5 Pull-ups + 5 Squats per 1 Rope Ascent (no rope/only 8.5’ ceiling)
“Porch” weights for C&J
145/155/165/175/185 (1RM PR on C&J)

Time – 18:00

Compare to 120611 - Tough to compare…
This was Day 42 of CrossFit for me. I had the following scale/subs:
Rope Climb = alternating 1-arm pull-ups on Gravitron machine (5 pulls per arm per 1 ascent)
(no rope and my pull-ups really sucked)
Scale C&J weight to “Women’s”
115/125/135/145/155

Time was 24:44

But all cleans rx'd this time. Jerked 205. Tried 225. Close, but didn't get it. Wasn't rolling bar back to good rack position on cleans. Caused left hand to hurt which mentally affected jerks. Wasn't focused on tech on last jerk.
6/11/12: 16:04
Still no jerks last 2 rounds. Think rope climbs were much faster. Did 215 clean last round. Power cleans 1st 3 rounds as usual.
9/14/11: 18:08. No jerks last 2 rounds. Only did 205 on last round. Power cleans until set 4.
