Comment #5 - Posted by: Thomas at July 3, 2013 6:37 PM

With tomorrow being Independence Day, let's all take a moment to remember those among us - and those that came before us - who have carried the mantle of freedom. Buy them a coffee, shake their hand and say thank you, plant a flag at a headstone, or simply let them go ahead of you in line. What in your mind might seem like the simplest gesture towards someone in uniform or who is wearing a hat or shirt signifying that they served, will fill not only them with pride, you'll be surprised how it will make you feel. Having been on both ends of this type of kindness I can't say which side feels better. But I can say that without brave men and women putting on a uniform and defending freedom around the world, we would never be able to enjoy all that we have today.
Fair winds and following seas.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Antonio at July 3, 2013 8:19 PM

@Antonio #9, 6k meters or 3.75 miles.

@Zach #8, share the sub with us. I don't have access to a pull-up bar on vacation, so I'll be doing just burpees unless there is a better sub.

Excited to do this one tomorrow. RIP solider.

This Canadian will be honoring your sacrifice tomorrow. Screw a rest day. No matter how much pain I feel tomorrow, it pales in the pain your family will feel forever.

Every time I see a new Hero WOD on this site I feel an immediate and visceral response coupled with the tingle of bile in my throat. I will always do what I can to honor this hero, among so many others I have been humbled to know.

U.S. Marine Corps SGT Mark T. Smykowski

Going with a strange sentiment today, but really felt compelled to somehow articulate here how much of an impact one man can make. Smyrkowski. Above I've typed the first chunk of information that was terrifying to realize I was reading. Smykowski. I always laugh after someone absolutely shatters my last name hahahgha and immediately after all humor fell away I ran with a stream of consciousness. I can only hope that someone might find my letters genuine. ..

Obslog:
a. 'Smykowski' (I really am absolutely not going to spell it out phonetically) I will try to say this without messing it up on the first try, sadness sets in when attempt number two teaches me again that it hurts to play this game alone.
b. I hope someone from his family might share his middle name.

Did 6.8k for my run in 53:12 and then had to take a few minutes to set up the mat and then tape up my foot from some running discomfort that kept me from jumping up to the bar. I would guess that the 60 burpee pullups would have taken about 10 minutes or less. I hope that next time I will be a little faster in the setup.

I did a 5x5 deadlift workout today...at 109 degrees here, Smykowski would have done me in. I will honor him, as soon as this heat wave breaks.

To Diana, Bert, Darren, and Kenny, CF has truly honored your son and brother, creating a hero WOD in his name on the 4th of July. With 3 Marines, your family has pulled its weight for the United States.

#57/JuliePlatt, I'm with you...this is my box, too.

I hope CFers from the USA take a few minutes, before tonight's burgers, beer, pizza and fireworks, and reflect about how extraordinary the events we commemorate on July 4th really were.

Like you and Jim R, I have my own garage box and love my "workout cave".
I powerlifted for years, hence power-girl, I am paying the price now. I have shoulder issues that I am forced to work around. Like bingo, there are many things the shoulders will not let me do. I am creative and find alternatives. Surgery will be the last straw. I am not ready to give in. Hang in there. As for bench press, Ha, rarely. Light weight if I am feeling good. Hang in there and good luck.

I watched a segment on ESPN this morning about servicemen/servicewomen surprising their families by coming back from duty early, with some coordinated surprise (arrive at school un-announced, at a sporting event, etc...) The look on the children's/spouse's/parent's faces were priceless. Couldn't help but shed a few tears. Recommend viewing - great stuff.

This obviously depends on what type of injury but with my ankle broke I went ahead and subbed:
6 rounds 10 reps each
pullups
pistols
plyo pushups (explode off the ground)
Sit ups w/ wall ball toss (above your head)

Now obviously a burpee is fantastic for its insane toll on your body and it really can't be replicated but this set done rapidly had me feeling pretty close to it. :)

Ran 3.6 miles in 33:25.

Pace was 9:20 or so. HR checked was at 160s most of the time. Didn't warm up, but felt good most of the way. I need to do more running. But will take it. Last timeI ran 3 miles had to be 2-3 months ago.
