It's awesome to have been crossfitting long enough that I can click the compare link and see my times from almost a year ago. Previous time was 12:30.

I always struggle to see the difference between the push press and push jerk. Is there truly much of one?

Second WOD of the day. Scaled to 205 pound DL and 95 pound OHS.

16:38.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Gavin at June 29, 2013 5:53 PM

@AO #2, yes, with the push press you arms are locked out overhead as well as your legs locked out. With the push jerk you do one dip to lock out the arms and then a second dip to get underneath and lock out the legs.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Gavin at June 29, 2013 5:55 PM

This is terrible: http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_WOD120919_DL_OHS_Full_HD.mov

Not.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Gavin at June 29, 2013 6:41 PM

CF, go to the video tape, those aren't strict presses! Why would you post a video where he clearly dips his knees on the strict press? Rob you are a super strong guy but if it ain't strict it ain't strict!

Sunday musings...

1) Tequila. "Calamity water".

2) Time 1. Whoa, will ya lookit at the time! Not sure if I'm still on Vallarta time or just running out of Ohio time.

3) Time 2. "Time is a Western concept." Hmmm. Lotta truth to that, although it might be amended to include mostly the North American part of the Western Hemisphere. Maybe throw in London and Geneva.

Time for those of us who have simply gone with the torrent of time as schedule always seem to run up against the clock, no? Time elsewhere seems more of a flow, a gentle current that one may ride a bit, or just let it gently brush by.

Timespace, as I've come to call it, seems much larger in other places. Time itself seems optional.

4) Vacation time. There's a certain arc when you look at a vacation. An arc of time, of different types of time, time modes. These arcs are influenced by pretty deeply seated character traits, or if not quite that deep perhaps just personality. While there is a sameness to parts of the arc, beginning and end, the middle tends to be where what might be a tic declares itself as something more. The faster one gets to the middle of the arc and the longer one stays there are also important data points.

Some of this is rather trite, I admit. You know, "it takes me X hours/days to leave the office behind" and "I start to think about work Y hours/days before my vacation is over" kinda stuff. My sense is that X and Y are important, but I confess that I really can't say why. For those folks for whom job = hobby = passion, X + Y may = vacation. For most of us though, not so much.

I find that vacations tend to sneak up on me now. BAM! Departure day. The frenzy to tidy up is so intense that I now tend to leap right to the center of the arc on the front side, figuratively and quite literally sweeping it all into the closet and closing the door as I hop in the car. This represents major progress.

What it says about me that I allow the closet door to re-open with days remaining is yet unclear.

5) Vacation style. Ever read the book "The Ugly American"? Not new, although every generation seems to "discover" this about Americans abroad. I think I read it in Junior High School. It may be accurate, it may be caricature, and it may be a case of seeing what you expect to see whether or not it's truly there. Whatever. All I know is that the more I observe myself on vacation the more I find wanting.

It's all about style.

For instance, Mrs. bingo's Dad has perfected the art of acquiring a cheap bed in a fantastic location and then spending his time and money exploring from that base. I tend to stick the landing. You know, land somewhere and stick there. This is influenced by an underdeveloped sense of adventure, which is in turn reinforced by an appallingly shallow knowledge of other cultures and languages.

On the other hand, my Father-in-Law wakes up near a beach, puts on his sandals, and wades into whatever and wherever, with enough knowledge to demonstrate a deep respect for whatever locale he is visiting. His style is to place himself THERE. He's still an American abroad, still dependent on at least a couple of the locals knowing English, but he is the antithesis of the Ugly American.

The extreme of course, is to not only be IN country but as much as possible to be OF country. Mrs. bingo did not visit Cap Verat as a school girl, she was a school girl in Cap Verat. Classes in French because class was in France. Pat S. is about to embark on an epic motorcycle trip from Montana to Bolivia. Part of his prep has been a deep dive into Spanish; no english-speaking bellhops where he's headed. His "catch of the day" will not appear on a menu so much as it will (hopefully) be on the end of a fisherman's line as Pat sits at his side. "Patron" the honorific of his host, not the made-up moniker of some South Beach entrepreneur's branding exercise.

Nope, Pat, Mrs. bingo, and my Father-in-Law all have style when it comes to vacation. A style that stems from something as far removed from the Ugly American as can be. Indeed, the arc of their vacations starts days, weeks, months before Departure Day. Their vacation arcs extend endlessly onward after they return because their immersion in place has altered them. They return with a part of their vacation now a part of themselves.

Now THAT'S style.

I'll see you next week...

@Bingo, I loved your musings today. I just returned home from vacation with my family and have to say that when we left our vacation base, I cried. I felt as if I were leaving a part of me behind. We didn't go anywhere exotic and stayed in country, but I've never felt so "at home" while on vacation as I did there.

Back to the real world tomorrow... God help me.

21-15-9 of 145# DL, 45# OHS = 6:31

( vs 9-19-12: 21-15-9 of 225# DL, 75# OHS = 10:55 )

DL coming along (did 5x5 @ 155# last week), but it was a shock to not be able to rep at all at 75 or even 65# for OHS.

Seeing surgeon for final post-biceps tear appointment (for Feb repair) this Wednesday. Going to ask him about what to expect wrt weights and progress on OHS and pull ups, maybe a few other exercises.

21-15-9 reps of:
185 pound Deadlift (84kg)
95 pound Overhead squat (43kg)

7:50 (last time 6:32 PR unbroken, before 8:21)

Done after a 1 hour bouldering session. Shaky OHS today, despite proper warm-up. Rested yesterday, but probably wasn't recovered well enough from last weeks eight days of WODs in a row, including two heroes.
Had to break OHS 13/8 and 10/5 and even round two of the DLs in 10/5. Good effort anyway, room for improvement next time.

Compare to 120919; Time - 18:19; that's 8:28 quicker that last due, no doubt, to improved efficiency with OHS. I'll bump the weight up to 115# next time... not sure if I'm ready to go that volume with 135# (RX) yet.

DL's unbroken, From last time in Sept 2012 - this time I felt weaker on the DL's (strength went down following injuries and taking it easy on the heavy weights over the last yr)and stronger on the OHS (flexibility and form improved since last yr) and less rest because of improved endurance over the past yr.
