How do these guys get this big!?! Going to the gym now to try the workout from yesterday, will post after. Great Bday workout for me! Lol

@2
They concentrate on getting very strong for many years. Once the foundation of strength has been laid, they lean up and do a bit of crossfit.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Jim Cirby at May 18, 2013 11:44 PM

I am not sure what the name of the workout this particular competitor is doing is called, although I hear the name "Mitchell Report" is being tossed around?

Comment #5 - Posted by: cdh at May 19, 2013 5:29 AM

@ 3 -- uh, how do you know? Or is there only one path to strength and fitness and you happen to know what it is?

@ 4 -- so every ripped up crossfitter is on steroids? Man, I never knew that every body transformation I've seen is steroid induced. Certainly could not be extreme focus and discipline...

Mr. Leverich, as the great 50 said "If they hate, let 'em hate and watch the money pile up..."

In anticipation for Event 3 WOD tomorrow, 30 burpee muscle-ups, here's what the FAQ recommends for muscle-up sub:

"Pullups and dips. Some have suggested 1 min of both somewhat equates to one muscle-up. Most common substitution is 3 pullups +3 dips, or 4 pullups +4 dips."

I'm so sore today and will enjoy complete rest.

Sunday musings...

1) Flaneur. Happy wanderer in a modern city.

Nope, that's not what I would have guessed.

2) Background. Trying something a little different this morning, listening to music while I muse. A little light auditory background stimulus if you will.

Hmm, what to play after Led Zeppelin II finishes?

3) NSDOMS. Man, I'm sore. I mean really worked. There's no "delayed onset" to my muscle soreness today, unh uh. Got me plenty of that "I did Jackie" yesterday going on right now, thank you very much. You?

One of the things I hear from CrossFitters of all ages, both experienced and otherwise (as long as they are not full-time professional CrossFit athletes), is that the "reward" for a full commitment effort is soreness. Lots of it sometimes. How do you feel about this? What do you do about it?

A couple of my buddies here on the Main Page reached out after my "Jackie" milestone yesterday with both congratulations and questions about how sore I was (and was gonna be). Guys about my age with roughly the same number of CrossFit miles under their belts. I think there might be something to the notion that we more "mature" athletes may have a bit more muscle soreness and that it might hang around a little longer to boot. I don't know--I just started to think about it, frankly.

There's a difference between being sore and being injured, which I most assuredly am not. A difference between the soreness of an effort about which you can be proud and the pain one feels from being hurt. If you've put in your miles at Form and Consistency I think you've earned the privilege of being sore from Intensity. The risk comes from insufficient time spent on Form and Consistency.

I'm sore, and I feel good.

4) Mortal. We are but mortals. Billionaire or barkeep, the vessels of our voyage will all come to rest as deeply, as empty. Born lo or high we shall all be bourn aloft or below, our sails forever furled. Shod in buckles and bows, or like my Father, with cardboard to cover the holes, each will enter and exit equally bare.

None of us will be spared.

There exists a path to immortality, at least of a sort. However shod, however adorned our vessel, the course of our travels is forever marked by their intersection with that of our fellow wayfarers. The power and character of that immortality depends on the depth and character of those encounters.

No memory is spared.

Who will remember you? How will you be remembered? As your vessel slows, becalmed in ever shallow breeze, will you be accompanied? Have your travels brought other vessels closer, tenders still knotted? How large was your fleet? At the end will your vessel or your voyage be the memory? Your shoes or your footprints?

"Large was his bounty, and his soul sincere,
Heav'n did a recompense as largely send:
He gave to Mis'ry all he had, a tear,
He gained from Heav'n ('twas all he wish'd) a friend."
--Thomas Gray

The journey to immortality travels through friendship.

I'll see you next week...

Jim, that is misleading. I don't believe any of the top performers ever took years to solely do a strength routine. I know Josh in particular certainly needed to get stronger but he NEVER did one or two years of strength only.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Aush at May 19, 2013 8:15 AM

Kenny is a BEAST. No roids, just a ton or WORK.

Comment #10 - Posted by: K at May 19, 2013 9:25 AM

@Ben, the exercise in the picture shown is the one arm dumbbell snatch. It was part of one of the events yesterday.

M/ 39/ 135 lbs/ 5'-6"
Barbara As Rx:
5 rounds of: 20 pullups, 30 pushups, 40 situps, 50 air squats
rest exactly 3:00 between each round - For Time
I usually aim at keeping pretty even and my goal is to get below 3:00 for each round and therefor be less than 27:00
I was going pretty much unbroken on everything until the 3rd round where I started to break up the pushups a bit. I was surprised that I was able to go unborken on all situps and air squats. I'm not going super duper fast on the squats but continuously going wtih no rest.
I felt super drained at the end of the workout.
I was nursing a bit of a sore pulled lower back, but took the last 2 days off and warmed up for a while.
Pushups were the killer for me this time. I did all situps anchored with dumbells.
