Sunday musings...

1) Doppelgänger. The perfect twin; one who walks out when you walk in.

2) Annapolis. Nice little town ya got here. Cool home and home for Mrs. bingo and me, Savannah last week and Annapolis this. Lotta history in both.

3) Small world. It seems the bigger the CrossFit world gets, more Affiliates and more garage gymers working off CrossFit.com, the smaller the rest of the world becomes if you are a CrossFitter. My friend Bill was touring me through the Naval Academy on bikes (N.B. you can't ride a bike ANYWHERE on the parade ground!). I know exactly one person presently enrolled at the Academy. Sure enough, there she was just strolling to or from crew practice.

Yep, just rolling through the Naval Academy I bump into one of the most famous of the CrossFit Kids! Really cool to see you, Darby!

My world gets smaller and smaller, in a good way, every time CrossFit grows.

4) Winning. One of the things I like best about CrossFit is also one of the things which doesn't really translate or transfer out of the Box and into real life. Every day we are encouraged to play to win. The raw, naked desire to be some version of our best, to win the battle against our old self while we aim for better, is not only acceptable but desirable. We give ourselves permission to win, and we also give ourselves permission to openly WANT to win.

In real life it's not like that. People look down upon folks who yearn to win.

Maybe it's because the notion of winning is too tightly associated with zero-sum games like the ones we see on TV on the weekend. Perhaps it's the vision of corporate titans who have reached their pinnacle by trampling all who stood between them and the top. Somehow this has translated into a culture of disapproval of the very effort to win, to be successful, even if that effort transpires in a non-zero sum setting.

No solution to offer here, I'm afraid. Just a quiet wish that this, too, comes out of the Box and into real life. That it's more than OK to try to win.

5) Mother's Day. What? You thought I wouldn't have something to say about Mother's Day while I sit in a car driven by Mrs. bingo?!

I once suggested re-naming Mother's Day "Mommy's Day". It was my way of saying that being a Mom involves much, much more than simply giving birth. Mrs. bingo was asked recently if she had any kids; she laughed and said 'no, I have 3 adults!' Funny line, however inaccurate. I've yet to meet the Mom who felt her days of "Mommyhood" were over simply because all of the kids had reached the age of majority.

Trust me, Grambingo is still actively engaged in the effort to parent yours truly!

Any job without an off button is tough, but one that lasts your whole lifetime is in a whole different ball o' wax. Flowers and chocolate for Mom today? Sure! But how about spending just a tiny bit of time and acknowledging how much you mean to your Mom, no matter how old you are, and how much she wants you to win in every little way. You may not always agree with her when it comes to most anything, but my bet is that she really loves you even when it seems that it couldn't be possible. Mom's are like that.

Never miss the chance to tell your Mom you love her, too. Start today, Mother's Day. Right after she opens the chocolates!

I'll see you next week...

I am a middle of the road crossfitter and a trainer at my gym. I miss the WOD demo's as performed by other normal people at normal gyms (ie not Froning, Foucher, etc.) - it is nice to see how other gyms or trainers or individuals approach the WODs. Occasionally it would give me new ideas for myself or as a trainer.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Brock Aunan at May 12, 2013 8:23 AM

So is this the only workout you do for the day? Nothing else or do people add things and this is just the foundation of todays workout? Want to just make sure so I can continue to improve, thanks

Comment #22 - Posted by: Mike at May 12, 2013 8:25 AM

#18 Mike,
Depends on your programing. I use this site as the basis for my programing. I tend to add to on days like this. For example today I'm also going to run 1.5 miles do some Double Under skill work and then do an abbreviated WOD of Pull-Ups x20 and Wall Ball shots x 20 - 3 rounds for time. That way i stay within the gist of the posted WOD, for example I wouldnt add 30 Deadlifts, A. because we just did them, B. I might be setting myself up for failure if say Kettlebell Swings @1.5 pood come up tomorrow. Hope that helps.. M/33/146lb/ 5'9" CrossFit x 1.5 years -CFL1

#22:
What I usually do is a strength sesh before the wod. Alternate squat, press, and deadlift throughout the wod days. I always snatch heavy and clean heavy 2-3 times a week. Post wod: I work on whatever I need work on. Usually for me it would be about 10 min muscle up practice and 10 minutes of handstand walk practice. But Idont do this everyday. I alternate muscle ups and handstand walks every other day. Hope this helps

There have been a lot of questions recently about whether this is all people do or if they mix in other stuff. Im guessing these are people trying to get in shape for life, not competitive cfers. Here's a practical answer from a busy dad/middle of the road home gym guy.
I do the warm up listed on the site. If the workout is really pull up intensive then I will tweak it by mixing in a run or some skill work for a sport. I do the burgener warm up on bar days. I do whatever is on the main site as closely as possible with the stuff I have, and try hard so I'm pretty well wrecked afterward. Every once in a while by some freak of scheduling (usually traveling on business) I have a longer stretch of time. When I know this is coming I mix in some endurance work from CFE.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Ryan cook at May 12, 2013 10:43 AM

Agree with Ryan. Usually a brief run (800 m) to get limber and then some skill work on things I'm not good at (double unders or muscle ups or HSPU) and then the WOD.

If it is a metcon, then often I'll do some cleans or deadlifts prior to the listed WOD.

Comment #37 - Posted by: Kevin C. (M/54/5'11"/178) at May 12, 2013 11:43 AM

The only thing I add, other than a warm-up, is skill work. I pick a weakness (easy to do when you have as many as I do) and work on it. I have been spending this week doing a lot of snatch skill-transfer exercises.

Biked 45 miles this morning, got greedy on the last one, should have stuck with 195. A PR I guess, I have never maxed a clean and jerk. This winter 205 was my 1rm hang clean, so happy to be close to that, and happy to clean 200 with decent form.

Any reason to be purposeful about switching feet? I am stronger with left foot forward.

need some massive work on clean technique, my elbows were pointing straight towards the ground.

I asked this on a previous thread but it was probably too late for anyone to see. I am new to crossfit, when workouts are like this one, where its not a large volume of work, is it recommended to do some supplementary lifting/running as well on these days?

You can, but I dont. I program for myself and take a gander at the CF HQ site periodically. When I see something I like I grab it. I only did the C&J because the following day I had this:

80 Over Head Squat 65#
80 Double Unders
800m Run
80 Double Unders
80 Wall Ball Shots 20#
80 Double Unders
80 Push Ups
80 Double Unders

It's all personal preference, but the goal of CF is not to kill yourself everyday. These days focusing on skill movements is good just to focus on that. I would say that it took me 25-30 mins to get through all seven rounds because I wanted to take my time with it, and get mentally ready for each lift. It worked because I got my PR of 225#.

Last one ugly! Had to press the jerk & it was bad b/c clean took so much energy. Think all due to tech breakdown. Tech pretty good on earlier rounds.
4/9/12:155,160,165,175,185,195-split jerk,205-F twice on jerk. Stopped there since I wanted to do metcon:
8 min AMRAP - 5 thrusters, 10 burpees - 6 rounds + 5 thrusters & 1 burpee. Better on thrusters when I got back on heels & kept weight at clavicle in rack position.
C&J. Decent job hips & chest rising at same rate & landing behind initial jump pos. Good job rolling wrists forward at setup. Jerk was limiting factor.
