I've had a problem with thrusters related to grip. The grip on the downward motion is basically resting the bar on the upper chest with the fingers, inverted, holding it in place. But on the press motion, it's a regular grip of the bar. I can't seem to make that transition rapidly, such that my thrusters are basically a front squat, a pause to alter the hand position, and a push press (3 distinct movements, not 1 fluid movement). Any suggestions?

I joined a local crossfit gym about two weeks ago so I haven't been doing main site's workouts just wanted to share our workout today to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon:

"Marathon Monday"
5 Rounds
4 Squat Clean and Jerks (185,125)
15 Chest to Bar Pull-ups
13 Burpee Lateral Jumps
After 5 rounds are complete:
800m run
Your time is your total time for all 5 rounds plus the 800m sprint.

weights for clean and jerk - max weight is 185/115... scale accordingly - but should be tough

I did 155# for the SC+J, 29:30

Strong for Boston

There is also a link to help the Richard family:

If you are a box owner please honor our city and this family by completing this WOD with your community. If you could please urge your members to donate anything they can to help the Richard family, it would be beyond appreciated.

If you don't have a rower substitute sumo-dealift high pulls (sdhp) with 45 pounds for men and 30 pounds for women. Take the bar from mid shin to under your chin--"shin to chin."
1K row = 100 sdhp's

In my comment on April 14, I was asking if any of you had experienced extreme soreness and if so, how did you deal with it. Per your suggestions, I have added branched chain amino acid and fish oil supplements to my diet. I cut the amino acid dosage in half to 900 mg per day as the recommended dosage seemed like a lot. I am grateful to say that I can already notice a dramatic difference. Since that post, I have maintained my normal CF schedule and the soreness has almost disappeared. Thanks for you help.

No distance row, no pullups, and probably no thrusters for a while (8+ weeks post right biceps surgery), so made up a little amrap chipper thing to ease right upper body into things:

15 min amrap of:

5 turkish getups 10#
10 box jumps 18"
15 back extensions
100m farmers walk 50# lh, 10# rh
10 ghd-ish situps back-n-down from lat pulldown bench
5 dips w/60# gravitron help

Got 3 rounds + 5 tgu + 10bj + 15be + 30m f.walk = 165 reps + 230m f.walk

Good workout. Has been almost a year since I did this one last. Last time I did a 6:49. This time I did a 6:57 RX'd. Considering that I did heavy back squats and heavy push-press, I think I did pretty decent :) When I'm fresh, I'll go sub 6:40 baby!!!!

I agree - I don't like butterfly PUs. So I don't do them.

I stick to struggling with anything more than 10 kipping PUs :D

My gym doesn't have a pull-up bar where I can get full extension of the legs and thus it's difficult to do a proper kip. I love my gym though, getting a better pull-up rack is one of the very few things I'd like to see changed.

CFWU-2. Get done before coaching session. PU only upper body 1st, dips 2nd. Superman. DU.
7:50-PR
Off rower in 3:38 as usual. Think thruster much better. Only put down after 31. Extended pauses at top during last 10. Tried to keep them steady. Tried not to bend knees until bar back to shoulders.
2/11/13: 8:56
Disapp w/time overall. Off rower at 3:38, so on par there. Thrusters seemed better, little wider grip, more pauses at top instead of putting bar down. Put down at 25 & 40. PU prob the worst. Didn't go hard here. Still playing safe w/shoulder.
7/26/11: 8:29
PU not bad. Chalk helped. 17 to start.
